The following message was posted in the Obituaries section of Musical Traditions Internet magazine today

"Vic Legg phoned to say that his mother, Sophie, died early this morning. She had been ill for a couple of months, and he said that in the end it was a release.
Funeral arrangements have yet to be made. He asked that I spread the word.
Lyn Murfin - 6.6.07"

Condolences to Vic and Viv, and to other members of the family and friends.

What a wonderful repertoire of songs she had, and such a delightful way of putting the songs across. Vic and Viv are doing a good job of carrying on the family tradition. But her death is a sad loss to all traditional song lovers.
Condolences to all the family.
Mary Humphreys

Oh, That's very sad. Much Love and condolences to both Vic and Viv. It is so good to know that she passed her songs on to such great tradition bearers, She can rest easy and in peace.
Much Love, Lucy

A wonderful lady, indeed.

If any of you see Vic or Viv, give them my condolences, and a hug.

Kat - thanks for the link, including the sound clip!

I never had the pleasure of hearing Sophie sing live, but have been privileged to hear Vic and Viv doing a proper job of keeping the songs going.

The Orchard family are still singing and dancing too, and Jason Rice (of the Dartmoor Pixie Band) sang "Just beginning to sprout" at the Pennymoor Song and Ale in Devon last weekend.

My condolences to Vic and Viv and the rest of the family.

Kitty

I've had the pleasure of meeting Sophie several times, the last being when I recorded Viv's album for Veteran in 2005. Viv had spent time teasing out lots of Sophie's odd memories of songs - a line here and a line there - and then letting them lie for a bit to see what came back. I'd fed her a verse or two of 'A Sailor's Life' and the next time I saw her she'd got a modified version (or reversion) to sing. With Sophie's help, Viv reconstructed a number of songs this way, including some that had been in her Dad's repertoire, and sang them on the album.

Sophie was a no nonsense lady who told it like it was. Her stories of life in transition from traveller to settled traveller were spellbinding. Her recordings for Pete Coe, two decades ago, were really superb.

I'm sorry she's gone but she had her time and left a great legacy.

Condolences to all the family.

Johnny Adams

You are most welcome, HKitty. I was delighted to hear the sound sample, too. Would love to hear more stories about Sophie. She's the type of person I would love to know and listen to tell their stories.

I'm listening to a Peoples' Stage cassette tape called Catch Me If You Can, by the traveller family Sophie Legg and Charlotte and Betsy Renals. Peter Coe recorded it.

Sophie, who sang the tape's title track, was a true artist who carried on the singing tradition. My thoughts are with Vic and Viv.

Rather than a death to be mourned, I would say a life well lived and to be celebrated.
