Subject: BS: Oldest Car on the Mudcat From: The PA Date: 07 Jun 07 - 04:59 AM Is it me, or are there lots of old cars around. Over the last couple of weeks I've seen cars with registration plates from the 70's and 80's, Morgans, MG's, Triumphs, all in quite good condition. Am I noticing them because I also drive an oldie (1974 Range Rover). So, what do you drive and how old is it - who has the oldest car on the Mudcat? Any takers? |
Subject: RE: BS: Oldest Car on the Mudcat From: Georgiansilver Date: 07 Jun 07 - 05:18 AM Interesting subject..especially since the government are considering banning all cars over ten years old from our roads......(UK that is) I love going to classic car shows and admiring the work of those really dedicated people who fully restore clapped out old vehicles into almost new condition.....the Government are in for a slating if they try to bring this in. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oldest Car on the Mudcat From: Shaneo Date: 07 Jun 07 - 05:29 AM Not that old , but mine is rare in Ireland at least, a 1995, S280 Merc. I have been told there is only 11 in the country . In Ireland they buy number plates ,not cars , they want to be seen driving a new car. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oldest Car on the Mudcat From: GUEST,Rog Peek at work Date: 07 Jun 07 - 06:05 AM Classic Cars is my other main interest. I have a Reliant Scimitar GTE 1972 owned for 26 years, used regularly and coming up for some tidying up shortly including a respray . Also have a 1970 Morris Minor restored and converted from a saloon to a convertable (tourer as they were called)by me about 15 years ago. In a former life this car was a Bristol police car (Panda car as they were called in those days). Also have a 1968 Reliant Scimitar GT (Coupe)3litre version (only 600 made) totally dismantled for restoration. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oldest Car on the Mudcat From: The PA Date: 07 Jun 07 - 06:12 AM Guest - that is impressive, particularly the Moggie Minor. My Rangie had a private plate when I bought it, I sold the plate to pay for some repairs and was surprised to find I could have it registered with its original plate. It's in perfect nick except for the tail gate which is being replaced soon. It tows my horses trailer all over the place and never lets me down. Oh, how about motor bikes any really old ones out there? |

Subject: RE: BS: Oldest Car on the Mudcat From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 07 Jun 07 - 02:53 PM 1987 Dodge Ram conversion van with a flush toilet and refrigerator. Over 200,000 miles. 3rd engine and third transmission. It has the big V-8, a 4 barrel carburaetor, and a 36 gallon gas tank. It gets only 9 MPG when the ac is running and it runs on only super premium gas. The other side of the coin; no car payments except to the mechanic. A new one with a toilet would cost me $70,000 which I do not have. SOL |

Subject: RE: BS: Oldest Car on the Mudcat From: Rowan Date: 07 Jun 07 - 06:38 PM I used to have a thing for Landrovers; when I was running a school camp I had the camp's 1964 LWB ute and my own Forward Control from the same period, colloquially known as the Flying Wombat. But neither was useful in town nor in the extreme north of Oz. In town and on the highway between Steiglitz and the various capitals where I sang and played the '68 Corolla was the go. In the Territory you could wait for weeks for Landrover spare parts while Landcruisers were like buttocks; everyone had two. I still have the '78 FJ40 from Oenpelli, but it only gets used for heavy haulage; the '88 Subaru wagon is the main transport and has been for 450,000 km. Cheers, Rowan |

Subject: RE: BS: Oldest Car on the Mudcat From: The PA Date: 08 Jun 07 - 03:13 AM It's happened again on the journey home from work last night a 'D' registration (1960'ish) Austin 1800, that old faded blue colour. Then again this morning on the journey to work some kind of sports car quite old, the age of the black and chrome numberplate. Couldnt see what it was I was going round an island at the time. Can cars have ghosts, am I the only person seeing them. ????? Oh yes, and my husband has a 1970's Zetor Tractor. Lets include everything and find the oldest vehicle on the Mudcat. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oldest Car on the Mudcat From: kendall Date: 08 Jun 07 - 07:52 AM Pilgrim, yes it is totally original. To take a fine old vintage car and drop a 426 blown hemi into it is a crime. |

Subject: RE: BS: Oldest Car on the Mudcat From: Bobert Date: 08 Jun 07 - 01:18 PM Ahhhhh, Phot... If I'm not mistaken the first Ford flathead V-8 came out in '32, which I believe was after the A models... As fir the Capt'n's A model, I'm sure he would know that it was completely original seein' as he bought it new off the showroom floor... Awwww, jus funnin' wid ya, Capt'n... We all know you ain't a day over 39... Danged!!! I forgot that I also have a '63 Chev ramp truck (car carrier)... It ain't running right now and may never run again with me as an owner seein' as I got a 454 cu.in. outta a old motor home and put it in the ramp truck and ran into a little problem with the clutch shaft and the 454 exhaust manifold both wanting to occupy the same space and, well, haven't had much time to get back to it, especially now that I know I'm gonna have to go with a set of headers (yuck) so the slutch shaft will have it's own space... And I hate headers... Bobert |
Subject: RE: BS: Oldest Car on the Mudcat From: Mickey191 Date: 08 Jun 07 - 06:51 PM May I just talk about a car long gone! In "67 I bought (surprise for hubby) a '48 Studebaker Bullet nose sedan. Paid $250.00 and had only 28,000 miles. It sure was an attention getter & he loved it! A city bus slid on ice a year later & demolished it. Broke his heart. Thanks. Nice memory. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oldest Car on the Mudcat From: kendall Date: 08 Jun 07 - 07:57 PM Right. The v/8 came out in 1932 in the model "B". If I recall right, the model B would give you an 8 or a 4. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oldest Car on the Mudcat From: open mike Date: 08 Jun 07 - 08:16 PM Oh yes, i USED to have a '67 Dodge Dart, slant 6, push button transmission. Or was it a Plymouth Valiant,,,yes, and it's name was Prince Valiant. Everything made sense when you lifted the hood you could tell what everything was. You could get to the oil filter with out scraping your knuckles, and it was so dependable. the Lug nuts tightened in opposite directions, depending on which side (driver, passenger) of the car they were on...i guess it was engineered that way so that the wheels would always be tightening as they drove, i bet a lot of folks (or foolks) learned that the hard way by trying to loosen the nuts by turning the wrong way til they snapped....but what a machine! |
Subject: RE: BS: Oldest Car on the Mudcat From: pdq Date: 08 Jun 07 - 09:37 PM Chrysler Corp. stopped producing the pushbutton automatics is 1964, but you are right on everything else. Well, maybe the distributor placement on the "slant 6" could cause a few scraped knuckles, but it was a fine engine. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oldest Car on the Mudcat From: coldjam Date: 09 Jun 07 - 01:55 PM '89 Conversion van-Ford Econoline. We don't see a lot of older cars on the road here. I think they are systematically doing away with them. They are crushing older cars so parts are getting impossible to find...you CAN work on older vehicles...I don't think "they" like that...newer ones you're pretty much at the mercy of a mechanic, or you have to be a contortionist & have special equipment to get AT the parts. Soon all us poorer folks will be walking...good for writing folk songs though! (walkin' down that long lonesome road don't cha know) |

Subject: RE: BS: Oldest Car on the Mudcat From: Scoville Date: 11 Jun 07 - 04:50 PM We just sold a 1974 standard VW Beetle daily driver (we considered this to be a late-model Beetle). There's a 1977 MG-B rotting away in the back yard that would love to be fixed up if anyone is so inclined (it starts and recently had a carbuerator rebuild, but the interior and rag-top are present in spirit rather than in fact). Will sell it cheaply. I also know where you can get a 1937 LaSalle in need of some TLC if the MG isn't a big enough challenge. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oldest Car on the Mudcat From: Neighmond Date: 12 Jun 07 - 01:39 AM Well, there is a 1927 Packard in the barn here. Subject: RE: BS: Oldest Car on the Mudcat From: JohnInKansas Date: 12 Jun 07 - 08:45 AM Chrysler Corp. stopped producing the pushbutton automatics is 1964 The "1965" XM410E1 8x8 transport truck that I ran prototype evaluation tests on for the army, at Yuma Proving Grounds from 1965 - 1968 had the notorious "push button automatic" transmission. My memoirs show that we broke more than 40 sets of buttons in the process of demonstrating that the Chrysler proposal was "less than optimum" for adoption by the Army. Although I did manage to break an axle off mine, my testing was less severe than the Marine Corps crew at San Diego, who sank theirs in ~60 feet of water in San Diego harbor, while swimming it around. The crew at Ft. Knox reportedly lost more than a couple of weeks when theirs was mired in the mud and eventually required an M88 to get it out. Not exactly a happy experiment for Chrysler, although it was a real fun sportster for cruising around the desert. John |
Subject: RE: BS: Oldest Car on the Mudcat From: Scoville Date: 12 Jun 07 - 10:27 AM Neighmond, where do you live? I'd love to see this Packard. No kidding--that's got to be a contender for the oldest daily, or at least utility, driver as anything out there. |

Subject: RE: BS: Oldest Car on the Mudcat From: GUEST,petr Date: 12 Jun 07 - 07:17 PM (I dont have it anymore, but my first car was my dads beatup 72 cortina station wagon). It was also easy enough to work on my own. But handy, I remember going to a lumberyard and putting in a couple of sheets of 4x8 plywood. Just as I was going to put it in the guy at the lumber yard chuckled and said.. theres no way that youll fit those in.. After I easily put them in, he said thats a handy little car. In Czechoslovakia, our first car was a used little fiat 600.. (it took years of saving to get a car).. We did a lot of touring when I was a kid, and sometimes stopped by a lake or pond and used the water to wash the car.. This proved to be a bad idea in Yugoslavia, when we stopped by the ocean (for the first time) and decided to wash the car. after that my dad had a hard time opening the doors.. He ended up giving it away to the family that we stayed with in Rijeka. |
