Subject: Origins: Recognize this Carol?
From: RTim
Date: 08 Jun 07 - 11:46 AM

Shepherds on their flocks attending
Shepherds at this night high watch
Saw a messenger descending
From the courts of Heaven dispatched.
Few of the favourites of the Almighty
Joyful news to you I bring
You have now in David's city
Born a saviour, Christ the King.
You have now in David's city
Born a saviour, Christ the King.

That is all I have, (plus a tune)

Anybody got more?

Tim Radford

The hymn is "Shepherds on Their Flocks Attending," from the collection of hymns sung in the Countess of Huntingdon's chapel, pp. 156-158; 1770.

Lyr. Add: SHEPHERDS ON THEIR FLOCKS ATTENDING
(Regency carol, c. 1770)

Hymn CXIV. ....For Christmas

1.
Shepherds on their flocks attending,
Shepherds that in the Night-time watch'd,
Saw the Messenger descending,
From the Court of Heav'n dispatch'd,
Beams of Glory deck'd his Mission,
Burstin thro' the Veil of Night.
Fear possess'd them at the Vision:
Sinners tremble at the Light.
2.
Dove-like Meekness grac'd his Visage;
Joy and Love shone round his Head,
Soon he chear'd them with his Message:
Comfort flow'd from all He said.
"Fear not, Fav'rites of th' Almighty,
"Joyful News to you I bring:
"You have now in David's City, (David's)
"Born, a Saviour, Christ the King.
3.
"Go and find the Royal Stranger
"By these Signs. A Babe you'll see,
"Weak, and lying in a Manger,
"Wrapt and swaddled; that is He."
Strait a Host of Angels glorious
Round the heav'nly Hearld throng, (Herald)
Utt'ring in harmonious Chorus,
Airs divine; and this the Song:
4.
"Glory to our God be given
"By the radiant Hosts above;
"Peace on Earth to Men forgiven,
"Objects of redeeming Love."
Thus they sang with Rapture kindling
In the Shepherd's Hearts a Flame, (Shepherds)
Joy and Wonder sweetly mingling:
All Believers feel the same.
5.
Lo, sweet Babe! we fall before Thee,
Jesu! Thee we all adore.
Thine's the Kingdom, Pow'r, and Glory,
We'll proclaim it evermore.
"Glory to our God be given
"By the radiant Hosts above;
"Peace on Earth to Men forgiven,
"Objects of redeeming Love."

Copied without change from website. "From the collection of hymns, sung in the Countess of Huntingdon's chapel, pp. 156-8, 1770."

Is that different from "Shepherds in the field abiding, watching o'er their flocks by night"? (With a chorus including "gloria in excelsis deo")

Kitty

Clearly the carol I am looking for is that which "Q" has so kindly provided - thanks!
- However, it is interesting that the title of the song in the Gardiner Manuscript; or at least Frank Purslow's copied out version on the VWML microfilm is actually - "Shepherd's on their flocks ABIDING".
I wonder if dear old Frank had Kitty's carol in mind when doing his stalwart work?

Tim Radford.

It's not my carol -it's "Angels from the realms of glory", no 119 in the Oxford Book of British Carols, first printed by Montgomery in his newspaper "Iris", 24 December 1816 (that's the carol, not the Oxford Book which was published over a century later). I think Frank Purslow would have known about this! RVW and Martin Shaw arranged the tunes for the Oxford Book of Carols.

Words, J Montgomery
Music, Old French tune
Arr., Reginald Jacques
Oxford University Press

Note:
"Angels from the Realm of Glory," by Montgomery, is in "The Hymns and Carols of Christmas," with midis for alternate tunes, and noteworthy. Also extra verses not in Montgomery.
