Couldn't resist: This is what Texas folksingers need going at home while they're out performing around the country. :)

Goat vs. mower: UW-Bothell tries experiment
(from the Herald (Everett, WA) 7/14/07)

BOTHELL - The brown, black and white goats didn't notice their audience Thursday as they munched the thorny blackberry bushes on the hill behind the library at the University of Washington's Bothell campus. Human visitors wandered up to the orange electric fence for a closer look at the unusual gardeners, brought in by the university and Cascadia Community College to control the pesky bushes.

The headstrong herd was up to the challenge. "They're tough little guys," said Joe Marchand, a gardener at the campus. "We're getting a lot of attention. A lot of people are coming up to check them out." The university and the community college teamed up to bring in the goats to control the blackberry bushes growing mainly behind the library.

If it works, they hope to use the goats for other lawn care projects. "We're experimenting to see how well they perform," Marchand said. "It seems like they're really knocking it back quickly."

The 60 goats are from a Vashon-based business called Rent-a-Ruminant. They arrived in Bothell on Wednesday evening and are scheduled to keep munching until Tuesday or Wednesday. Rent-A-Ruminant charges $750 a day plus a $200 fee for traveling and setting up the goats. While munching, the goats are corralled in a portable fence, which has a low-voltage charge.

If the experiment is successful, the university and community college will consider using the goats for controlling weeds and lawn maintenance, Marchand said. The idea of using the goats was to reduce the amount of fuel-burning equipment used on the campus and fits in with the university's efforts to be easier on the environment. The campus has been herbicide-free since July 2006 and practices organic methods of weed removal. The campus also creates and uses its own compost.

Before the goats, workers with weed trimmers hacked away at the blackberry bushes, Marchand said. The work was intense and very time consuming. Working on an uneven slope with the trimmers also was a safety issue. And the stinging nettles and prickly blackberry bushes weren't a treat for workers either, he added. Many were thankful the goats took over the job. "We were like 'Yippee, we don't have to do it!'" Marchand said. "They're just continuous eating machines."

The herd's owner, Tammy Dunakin, started with 10 goats 21/2 years ago. Today, she has 100. Each goat has a name and a distinct personality, she said. Dunakin is even trying her hand at breeding goats specifically for vegetation management.

Goats are well suited for the work because they can continuously eat a variety of weeds. "I like to say they're just eatin', poopin' machines," she said. The invasive Himalayan blackberry growing on campus is a favorite among Dunakin's herd. "How they eat thorny stuff like blackberry is a mystery to me," Dunakin said. "Their mouths never get hurt. They literally suck down the blackberry cane like it's spaghetti."

Jed, I have several shelves of materials from the Northwest, books, tapes, albums, notes, that my father accumulated over 40 years. He was a folk partner in crime with Bob Nelson and Don Firth and no doubt some others you met last week. (Don was his guitar teacher). If you have particular questions about songs you heard or found up there, or want to poke around in this stuff one day, let me know. I have a scanner and a copier here and occasionally send folks words to things (when asked, of course!).

Lou and I really enjoyed the visit. Good food, good folks, good jamming! We left Stewart's house and went on to visit her brother an hour north of the city for a couple of days.

I came away with some new songs to listen and research ...

Well, we certainly had a delightful afternoon of music with Jed Marum. He is a joy to hear. Not only was his music superb, but he wove his songs together with an ease that only comes from many years of living his music. His instrument work was perfect. It only added and never distracted.

I enjoyed many of his songs, but one that sticks in my memory is "Bard of Amaugh". I also enjoyed visitng a while with him. He's doing an very gutsey thing: making his living off his music ... he quit his "day job" in January of 2,000, as I recall. IT was also a pleasure to meet "Mrs. Jed" (Lou, actually)and enjoy the obvious respect she has for the music.

All in all, a great Sunday. CHEERS, Bob(deckman)Nelson

That's how they go, isn't it, Bob!

Jed, one of the anomalies of life in the Northwest is the sunshine. Just because of the rainy reputation it doesn't mean the sun never shines. I think there is more sunburn up there than in other parts of the country where it is so hot no one in their right mind would go out in it. The Northwest temperatures are generally so pleasant that people stay out for a long time and that sunshine creeps up on them. Welcome to the club!

Stew ... Judy and I were just talking about today's concert. It's quite a wonderful format you've put together: first a concert in a very warm and inviting home; then a light supper; followed by a hoot. It presents the best of everything. With the Seattle singers I expect to see and hear,I'm sure it won't be long before someone says something like: "You know Jed, that second song you sang reminded me of this one!"

See you later today, Bob

Wow - it's been a whirlwind trip.

I am just getting back from a long day at the Tacoma games ... nice folks, lovely day, good music.

I maybe had just a little more pasta and clam sauce for dinner, but it's settling nicely in my belly. A bit sunburned (no cover over the stage? that's pretty unusual) and frankly, ready for bed.

On to Stewart's tomorrow - and really loking forward to it. Thanks for coming out to the El Diablo, Moly, Stewart and Mrs.

see ya ...

Jed,

I think you're making a serious mistake by "hard wiring" your brain by listening to the lyrics over and over. It adds a certain "spontaneity" to your performance if halfway through a song, you forget the next line! It's moments like that, that can REALLY bring out the creativity in your mind. I've found that speaking several foreign languages helps! Looking forward to your concert. CHEERS, Bob(deckman)Nelson

... oh, as a quick explanation, when I said above, "audio tape for on-board "rehearsal" readied ..."

What I meant was this: I have a habit of drilling lyrics and phrasing into my 55 year old skull my recording the song correctly several times into a cassette tape then listening to the song or songs over and over on my long drives or in this case on the plane. I am normally learning three or four songs at a time - so this technique helps me to quickly get them "hard wired" into my head, so I'm not searching for lyrics when I'm singing.

Works well for me.

Our ride picks up shortly. Bags are packed - guitar and banjola (gulp) ready for the belly of the aircraft, maps printed, contact info printed, audio tape for on-board "rehearsal" readied ...

I've tried my best to contact everyone I know in the area. I'm really counting on getting people out to each show - I have few guaranteed fees on this trip. I hope it's OK to post the entire set of show details in this thread.

I'm doing a radio show on Friday afternoon (details in the list below). The show is broadcast to the Seattle area and webcast around the world - so you can listen in from anywhere (remember the times listed are US Pacific Coast Times).

See you soon!

Jed,

You might be the perfect person to "bounce" a song off (I know, bad writing). My great, great Grandfather was a union soldier wounded and captured by the Confederates at Antietem. (s?) He spent over two years in Andersonville prison, Columbus, Georgia. He survived and was eventually released.

I traveled down south in 1955, and I visited the Andersonville prison. It was a moving experience.

During that journey, I also discovered his diary in a museum in Springfield, Missouri. The preamble to this diary was a song. When we meet, I'd like to share that song with you and hopefully learn more.

LOL - It's a busy few months ... I have just finished booking all the dates, but I'll probably find a session or two along the way .... Seattle is just around the corner ... then its Louiasina, Kansas City, home (Dallas) and then it starts all over again for New York/New England.

Life is good. who needs sleep!

Jed has done several concerts here in Maine. A wonderful combination of traditional songs and his own. He has a wealth of knowledge on the Civil War.

He was an original member of the Beef Brothers - have him explain that. And he plays the banjo...

A thread search will turn up several UTube performances for those who want a preview. My advice - don't miss him. Jed is a talented performer who is generous with his knowledge and pure pleasure in an intimate house concert setting.

For all you Seattle area 'catters, here's a chance to hear Jed in an intimate house concert, and after the concert join in a potluck supper and a 'hoot' with him. Jed will be interviewed on KBCS (91.3 fm) Friday's (6/22) Lunch With Folks, he will play at the El Diablo Coffee Co. on Friday evening, and will perform at the Tacoma Highlands Games on Saturday (6/23) prior to this house concert on Sunday (6/24).

Jed Marum House Concert Sunday, June 24, 3 pm. NW Seattle (Broadview). Jed Marum sings traditional and contemporary songs in Celtic and American style, with Bluegrass roots. Concert at 3 pm, followed by a potluck supper and a "hoot" (bring instruments).

PM me for more information and reservations.

Cheers, S. in Seattle
