Jacqui - how long do you have to wait for a report from the surgeon?

Linn and Tom,

I am *so* glad to hear that things are going well.
Take your medicine as you should (all of it!) and take good
care of each other. It's a relief to come back after
several days away (in lovely Lexington, Virginia)
and hear that all are on the mend... and the cat may
even come back.

cheers, Pamela

Did get some bad news this morning -- or rather, disappointing.

The Jazz-min sighting turned out to be a false alarm. The look-alike turned out to be part of a batch of nearly grown kittens -- too young and unspayed to be our girl. That call came first thing this morning, so, besides being exhausted, I'm not in the best of moods today.

Trying to get somewhat caught up and back on schedule at work, right now. Arghhh!

Linn

Sorry I have not been around but I too was "paying penance" for an early dismissal plus dealing with some other family matters. This kept me away except to read a few and I followed your homecoming and finally now get around to saying.........GLAD YOU'RE HOME!!!

Now take care and try to follow the plan. I know that personally I will say damn near anything to get out of the hospital. I'm told I once even agreed to go underwater and fornicate with a flounder if I could get released.   Happily, that one turned out to be a bad trip from the meds I was on, but I think I have been that desperate.   So remember, you have to do what you promised the Docs.........uh, nothing about fish was there?

Organ pipes, Mary!

I already have one wooden (A, I think) pipe given to me by a friend who worked for a company that repaired and restored organs. (Now he builds citterns, bouzoukis, and octave mandolins.)

Actually, I'd love a few more to add to the collection.

David Behm used to be able to get overtones when he blew into the pipe -- he had a pretty good set of "pipes" himself!

Aside from that, I'm glad to see you're out & about again & I was thinking that you might have missed me since I was away when all this happened, "I'm back" so you'll either be getting a kiss or a slap, I don't know which will be worst for you but try smoking & find out. Might see you Friday or Saturday, be forwarned.

When will we celebrate Linn's birthday? I have 8 huge tubs filled with stuff for the yard sale. Any or all of it is hers.

Have a use for several dozen organ pipes, both wood and metal?

I am now at home. Thanks to all for positive thoughts and good wishes; I'm sure they helpedto speed things up. Food was typical hospital fill, short os seasoning, bountiful in its blandness. The meatloaf was almost tasty as it had real onions in it. And there were machines capable of producing real coffee with body and flavour.

I really can't think of anything to add, but I will entertain questions as long as they come with their own personal sense of humor.

Now for a wee taste of that amber elixer which was not available at all.

Thanks again -- Tom

Linn-

Best of luck in springing Tom today.

While we're waiting for more updates here's the latest story about our periodically "missing cat." Tejitu, our calico cooncat, has been gone as long as a week in the past. When I returned from the Mystic Sea Music Festival on Monday she was gone again, evidently that morning. There was no sign of her by evening or by the next morning so we sent the usual alerts to the animal shelters, the town animal control officer, and our nearest neighbors. No little flattened cats on the road were reported by Public Works. Her half-sister Tilahun remained unconcerned, with a peculiar smirk on her face. Well, late yesterday afternoon I was making another circuit around a neighbor's house; they were off to a cottage for a few days. I checked their bulkhead, which they'd left unlocked, to see if Tej was down below and she was not. Then I heard a familiar meow from somewhere, and finally determined that it was from within the house. And when I meeowed back, Tej jumped up on the screened open bedroom window sill and appeared quite happy to see me. The screen wasn't locked and I managed, with my handy tack remover, to ease it up enough so that Tej could jump down. The neighbors appeared quite surprised when they returned later that evening after I told them what our "stupid cat" had done. They hadn't a clue how she slipped into their house but I bet it wasn't the first time. Now she's curled up in my lap while I'm trying to type this little story up.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Okay, morning update. Just talked to him -- they haven't brought his breakfast yet, but they're letting him have pancakes, so he's happy and curmudging less.

Anywho, he still doesn't know what time they're springing him today, but all he's waiting for is the training on how to do the twice daily 30-minute antiobiotic drip that he'll have to do for the next month.

So probably some time this afternoon.

I went for a short visit yesterday evening. He seemed to be doing pretty well for being incarcerated. I saw the remains of his food tray and thought, "OMYGOD - ARE THOSE CANNED SQUISHY-FRUIT PEARS/PEACHES!!!" I actually thought it out loud. Tom said they were apples. Otherwise, he might have had an extended stay from the shock of it all.

I'll keep a better eye on this thread now that I know you're having trouble.

Talked to Tom a little while ago. He's doing well, and it looks like I'll be bringing him home tomorrow afternoon. As they had said originally.

I also talked to the woman who has spotted the cat that meets Jazz's description and she hasn't been able to reach the woman who has been feeding the strays. She said she'll call me either later tonight or first thing in the morning and I can go over and see if it is, indeed, Jazz. Could very well be -- her road is about 3 miles or so from here, but it's a pretty straight shot through the woods. And Jazz has been missing since Memorial Day weekend.

Good night!

Just got home -- without Tom.

False alarm. They did wheel him off while I was there to put another portal for the antibiotic drip he'll have to do twice a day FOR A MONTH!!! (But didn't yet take out the one on his neck that has been serving in that capacity.) And then they have to train him how to do it. And he's off oxygen -- said he had to get used to breathing what the rest of us are stuck with.

Sigh.

But now he's got clothes, so if he needs to make a break in the middle of the night...

Okay, morning report:

The latest news is that the infection, whatever it is, is more or less under control and he possibly has pneumonia in his left lung, but that appears to be under control, too.

He may be going home tomorrow (Wednesday), although one nurse suggested today. Nothing official yet and they have to remove one IV portal ain his neck nd possibly put in another one if they can decide what kind of antibiotics he'll need after he leaves the hospital and how it's to be delivered.

On an entirely different note, got a voicemail yesterday from a woman saying she's seen several stray cats lately and one matches the description of Jazz-min. AND she left a phone number, unlike the two other calls (one of which MAY have been Jazz and the other probably not). So I'm going to give her a call later this morning. McCrillis Road is a ways from Priest Road, but she's been gone for two weeks and it's shorter through the woods.

All the best for a speedy return home Tom - having had a few stays in hospital here in the UK I can guess what you are going through. Only advantage over here is the NHS (National Health Service) which I have to admit is pretty good at dealing with emergency admissions, and all for free! On the downside, the wards are pretty crappy and there is little privacy - if you want private, then you pay private.

Visitors.

He doesn't seem thrilled at the idea of visitors -- I think he'd rather have people call. PM me for his direct phone line.

(Jeri, I'll email you.)

Bob Frost was there, though, today not long after I got there and Tom seemed to enjoy the isit. It's just that it's bad enough with nurses, doctors, etcet etcet in and out every coupla minutes, I think he finds having someone there to be sort of adding to the room's overpopulation. You know how he gets when he can't escape occasionally when there are a lot of people around. And dressed the way he is in institutional type gear (and with tubes trailing) he really can't escape.

Well, the news today is rather confusing.

He still can't get straight answers as to what exactly the problem is. And it seems now they're concerned about the SOURCE of the pneumonia and/or infection. Either could turn out actually to be a worker's comp case..

I think he's got more antibiotics in him than blood at this rate. And they're threatening an antibiotic drip for another month after they turn him loose.

I got the magazine to the printer and I'm taking the next two days off. Maybe if I'm around we can get some answers.

He had an echocardiogram this morning, too..

Ach!

Linn-

I just got back from the Mystic Sea Music Festival and saw this thread. I'm very relieved that you managed to get Tom to the Emergency Room before things got even worse. I'm also relieved to hear he's looking better now.

It's no fun wishing to be "older" but I can certainly understand why the availability of Medicare might be of interest. I'll be signing up for that myself in a few months.

I can come early for the shanty session on Saturday if that would be helpful, and I'm sure that one or two other Roll & Go folks would also be willing to help "facilitate." Should we bring crowbars?

Give Tom our best, and try to get some rest yourself.

Cheerily,

Tom's doing (and looking) a LOT better today. It being a weekend, it's difficult to drag information out of the medical types, but it looks like it's both pneumonia and the low grade infection from the inflamed bursa on his elbow. It also looks like he'll be encarcerated until Wednesday at best. But at least he's in a regular room now, and doesn't have quite so many tubes getting entangled at his every move.

He's also got a great view of the main drag of Dover, NH -- which today they had cordoned off and a detour around a substantial chunk of it because of a bicycle race and some other vehicular-type races. But they also had the main entrance to the hospital barricaded -- the one with the traffic light. That left the emergency room entrance and leaving by that entrance sometimes has you taking your life into your own hands. (But at least you're close to a hospital...)

Speaking of accidents, just as I was signaling to turn off Rte 4 to get home, the car in front of me slammed into the rear of a pickup truck waiting to make the same left turn I was about to make. The guy in the car -- when he finally paid attention to where he was going -- hit the brakes so hard that a huge billow of "smoke" engulfed his car. He still left pieces on the road -- I don't think the truck sustained much damage.

Shades of the guy rear-ending (and totalling) MY car last September when I was waiting to make a left turn off another local highway. Ach!

Linn

Keep him at it Linda. One of the bigger problems is that heart problems somehow translate into the male mind as making you less of a man. That's crap of course. You are older and you aren't what you once were but you still ARE and you need to learn to live that keeps you as an "ARE" and not a "WAS."

Tom, you KNOW what infections can do to that valve! Guys like us have to be on the alert for those infections which will ruin it. Do you need me to kick your ass on this issue repeatedly? I'm 6 years into this valve and it works like a champ!

Talked to Tom a couple minutes ago. He's sounding a LOT better today.

They think it was probably a low grade infection from his inflamed elbow. They filled him with antibiotics, of course. He said he should be out of the ICU today, and if they still don't have a regular room, they'll keep him there at the lower room rate.

I'll print out the thread and take it with me this afternoon.

Thanks for all your good wishes!

Isn't it funny that when you have problems, life seems to pile on more at the same time? Well...gets them out of the way all at once I guess. Good thing you got him to the hospital when you did. Lots of people put it off because they don't think it can be that bad and it's so important to get these things at the start.

I shall do for you what so many lovely friends on here have done for me and send my thoughts and a biiiig hug. Two in fact, one each

Geez Linn.....We run in tandem sometimes don't we? I just got out today after a few days in the hospital for a sort of "tune-up." I was at the point of being out of breath and having angina after only a few steps. So I spent a few scary days seeing what had happened.   I'm out now and feeling fine so pass on to Tom my best wishes for a similar outcome.

You really have to be careful on the infections and the valve. At the least sign of any infection you need to be off to the ER and on antibiotics. My greatest pleasure in having the artificial valve is the way you automatically go to the front of the line at any ER by saying, "I have an infection, think I'm running a fever, and I have an artificial mitral valve."   You pass EVERYBODY!!!! LOL......Well hell, ya' gotta' get something out of this deal!

I'm thinking the best for you both as is Karen who can relate easily to your situation! Hang in.

Dear, dear Linn - before I read a word of this thread I said to my self
OH CRAP! This is not what either of you need, and especially not
on your birthday. I know you've been worrying about the old curmudgeon
ever since his last bout of surgery. I concur with everyone's good advice... while knowing that advice probably isn't what you need now.
You need a hug and a good meal. Wish I was close enough to offer them.

I will hold you both in my heart.
You've come to feel like family to me.

love, Pamela

As someone who has been thru this sort of stress, you MUST look after yourself - yes I know know you may 'feel guilty' for doing this, but you must keep up your health, food and fluid intake, and sleep.

You do need to get sleep and be able to relax at times - without using too much alcohol. If you can't get to sleep easily at night try some Valerian tablets - effects are gentle - but when they work you will sleep deep for some hours. Don't wait till the last minute to take them - take them an hour or so before you 'need' to be asleep - and DON'T mix them with alcohol!

You don't need TWO people unwell! :-)

I read some old words on Mudcat of Bruce Olsen's the other day.
He said something like, Just keep muddling through.
It brought tears to my eyes, but he was right.
I keep telling myself, just keep muddling through.

take care, Alice

Linn, just tell him to knock it off and if he wants to take a day or two off he can do it. In the meantime, you're going to worry and we both know it. Just keep reminding yourself that he's in the right place for stuff like this. I mean, that's what hospitals are for, right?

Have a cuppa tea, take a deep breath, and try to get some sleep.

Damn, sweetie. I think Jude's advice is the best. You need to rest and take care of yourself. Be sure and tell that old lefty that the Mick has him square in his sites and is praying for his swift return to curmudgeonlyness (??). And give him my love while you are at it. But save at least half for yourself.

Mick

Please do some good wishing on the financial end, too -- he doesn't have any insurance and Medicare doesn't kick in until after September.

Geez, wish all we had to do was worry about health!

Thank you all for your good and healing thoughts!

Tom woke up cold and shivering this morning and I had been worried about him then (it wasn't cold). Then about 45 minutes later he called me downstairs to get my own coffee (he brings me tea on weekdays and coffee on weekend). I went down and asked him how he was -- he said he felt like dogshit, so I asked if he wanted to go to the emergency room. He said he wasn't sure. I said I'd get dressed. He said, "Have some coffee first." I said, "I'm getting dressed."

And when I came back downstairs he said he thought going to the emergency room was a good idea, so we headed out. Can't remember when exactly we got there, but it was well before 9.

His heart was racing and his blood pressure was low. And he had a fever. He spent most of the day in the ER, then they sent him up to ICU mid-afternoon. Not sure exactly what the problem is, but they had him on antibiotics all day because of his heart valve replacement three years ago and it looks like he could have some kind of infection (part of it possibly caused by an inflamed and swollen elbow). Could also be pneumonia despite the first x-ray looking clear and him having had a pneumonia vaccine.

He just had a check up Monday and his defibrillator was read the Friday before -- and the medicos all agreed he was in great shape. And he felt great right up until waking up this morning.

We were supposed to sing today for the Friends of Odiorne and the anniversary of the Science Center, since we used to sing for their fundraisers. So we had to cancel that.

I just got home (6:30-ish p.m.) and I'm eating the calzone I picked up on the way, trying not. I've got phone calls to make, emails, etc. And I'm going in to work tomorrow so I can get the magazine wrapped up so all I'll have to deal with Monday morning is the cover (and my ADD boss) and can get it to the printer and then boogie on out of there to the hospital.

If I stop to think about it all (you know about the missing cat and the job search disappointments, etc.), I might just start feeling overwhelmed.

This isn't exactly how I had envisioned celebrating my birthday -- but, then again, I highly doubt this is what Tom had in mind, either!

I won't know more until tomorrow. Looks like he'll be in the hospital at least through Monday.

I've got to go listen to voicemail and call my mother.

Linn
