Subject: Origins: Twilight descends From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 11 Jun 07 - 08:29 AM I've just returned from a two-week trip to Italy. The trip was pretty hard for me. I got a good night's sleep only four nights out of fourteen, and at one point I had to go to the hospital. The noise of buses, subway and traffic was hard, too. So there I was riding on train one evening with my three companions. I woke from sleep, looked out the window, and a beautiful, blue-green twilight had settled over the hills. Without actually deciding to, I sat there and sang: Twilight descends, everything ends till tomorrow, tomorrow. Since we must part, here is my heart till tomorrow, tomorrow. Clouds drifting by echo a sigh. Parting is such sweet sorrow. I'm drifting too, dreaming of you. Till tomorrow comes. This is a song I have known for years, probably from listening to the radio as a kid. Now I wonder where it came from, exactly. Was it a pop song? From a movie? A revival from an earlier decade? And is there more to it? I googled it and didn't learn much. What does anybody know? |
Subject: RE: Origins: Twilight descends From: Waddon Pete Date: 11 Jun 07 - 03:13 PM Hello Leeneia, Your song (if I have the right one!) was written by Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock. Copyrighted 1965 It was recorded way back then by Jimmy Dean on his LP First thing every morning. Twilight descends every day ends till tomorrow, tomorrow....... etc. Hope that helps! Best wishes, Peter |

Subject: RE: Origins: Twilight descends From: GUEST,Judy Date: 25 May 15 - 11:13 AM I found a link that lists the date as 1959 - it was part of the muscial "Fiorello!" - Jerry Bock wrote the music. Sheldon Hamick wrote the lyrics. It can be found on the site: "Broadway Song Companion: An Annotated Guide to Musical Theater." It is a beautiful song. I wrote down some of the lyrics in a school yearbook in 1962. It still haunts me today. |

Subject: RE: Origins: Twilight descends From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 26 May 15 - 09:28 AM Hello, #. Thanks for the link. We don't hear music like that anymore, do we? I'm referring to the fancy, curling string part and the special vocal effects. Overseas trips are easier for me now. We are retired and we can take more time. (See OP.) |
