Hi, Lakeman - do they have anything to do with Australia's Ned Kelly?
-Joe-
Yes, as a matter of fact, it does. Here's the Traditional Ballad Index entry on the song:

Well, the Meredith-Anderson book was a disappointment:

    Farewell Dan and Edward Kelly
    (attributed to Jack Luscombe)

    Farewell Dan and Edward Kelly
Farewell Hart and Steve Byrne too,
With the poor your memory liveth,
Those who blame you are but few.

Source: Folksongs of Australia, by John Meredith and Hugh Anderson, 1967, 1985

The final three words were spoken, in the manner common to quite a few of the older singers.

First line sounds like "Starlight on the Rails," the second like "Go to Sleep, You Weary Hobo." The book says the song sounds like "Just Before the Battle, Mother," or a Boer folk song from South Africa.
So, is that all there is to the song?

I'll alert Bob Bolton. He'll know. He's the one I got the book from.

G'day Lakeman and Joe,

John Meredith only collected a single 4-line stanza from Jack Luscombe. Three years later, in Singabout vol.3, no. 2, Autumn 1956, p. 12 he published two fragmentary Kelly ballads - adding an extra stanza which was known from Bulletin magazine. Apparently nobody added any more, at that time.

In 1972, Warren Fahey - collecting as "the Australian Folklore Unit, collected a 4-stanza version of this from Cyril Duncan:

KELLY BALLADS - Two fragments
FAREWELL DAN AND EDWARD KELLY

Recorded by John Meredith from the singing of Jack Luscombe, aged 86 (in March, 1953), of Ryde, N. S. W. Luscombe learned the song in Queensland during the 1890s. The second stanza appearing In "The Bulletin" of June 10th, 1882.

Farewell Dan and Edward Kelly,
Farewell Byrne and Steve Hart too,
With the poor your memory liveth,
Those who blame you are but few.

Thirty policemen did besiege you
In the hotel owned by Jones,
Taken was our gallant leader,
Nothing left you but the bones.

THE KELLY GANG
Sent to the Editor in 1956 by Mrs. H. McKenzie, aged 89, of Balfour Street, Launceston, Tasmania.

Just think of the Kelly Gang,
Cut down in youthful bloom,
At the Shrine of Bathurst, (Bacchus()
On the twenty-ninth of June.

These heroes of the forest
Were hunted to and fro,
When tired of their weary life
They knew not where to go.

Straight into Glenrowan
Their wild course they did steer,
To drown their grief in rosy wine,
Their haunted souls to cheer,

May God with his great mercy,
For the sake of his dear Son,
Forgive the sons of Kelly,
And the crimes that they have done.

Collected by Warren Fahey from Cyril Duncan (source: 1- cassette collection of ABC Radio programs: While the Billy Boils, A Panorama of Australian Folklore, devised and scripted by Warren Fahey, Australian Broadcasting Commission, 1981. [ISBN 0 6442 975817]

Farewell Dan and Edward Kelly,
Farewell Byrnes and Steve Hart too,
Those that blame you are not many,
Those that blame you are but few.

Thirty policemen did besiege you
In the hotel owned by Jones,
Then was our gallant leader;
Nothing left you but the bones.

Dirty policemen did outdo you,
In a manner I am told,
Dirty policemen did outdo you,
For a paltry sum of gold.

Farewell Dan and Edward Kelly,
Farewell Byrnes and Steve Hart too,
With the poor, your memory lingers,
Those that blame you are but few.

This feels a little like a compilation ... but by whom...?

Regards,

Bob

G'day all,

Just by way of correcting silly error above:

The source of the final song was actually:"(source: 10- cassette collection of ABC Radio programs: While the Billy Boils, A Panorama of Australian Folklore, devised and scripted by Warren Fahey, Australian Broadcasting Commission, 1981. [ISBN 0 6442 975817]".

... One cassette doesn't make much of a collection. This was a boxed set, from 20 half-hour radio programs broadcast by Australian Broadcasting Commission, some time around 1980.

Regards,

Bob
