Subject: Shanty/Forebitter session for June (NH) From: Bat Goddess Date: 12 Jun 07 - 07:46 AM Since Tom is taking an enforced vacation from the computer, I guess I'll have to take over these duties. He should be there for the actual event, though! Shanty/Forebitter session for June will be held, as usual, at The Press Room on Daniel Street in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Saturday, June 16th, from 3:30 to 7:30 PM. Looking forward to seeing (and hearing) the survivors of Mystic! Tom may or may not regale you with tales of "hospital music" -- the annoying bonging ofbells and buzzers when heart rates go too high, or blood pressure too low, or a drip bag emptying, or the bong to remind the nurse to set the timer for another series of bongs or beeps, absolutely none of it to a rhythm suitable for shantying. They've probably got a proscription against concertina playing, too. Linn |

Subject: RE: Shanty/Forebitter session for June (NH) From: SINSULL Date: 12 Jun 07 - 09:53 AM I will be Garage Saling that day. Perhaps I will pack up the leftovers and go a-gifting at the Press Room. |

Subject: RE: Shanty/Forebitter session for June (NH) From: Bat Goddess Date: 13 Jun 07 - 11:42 AM I'm actually getting around to emailing a reminder, which I sometimes find time to do. Maybe we'll see some friends who haven't been around Portsmouth for awhile. Linn |

Subject: RE: Shanty/Forebitter session for June (NH) From: SINSULL Date: 15 Jun 07 - 10:21 AM My Yard Sale ends at 4PM. At that point I intend to crawl into my house and hibernate. I hate to miss another of these. |
Subject: RE: Shanty/Forebitter session for June (NH) From: Bat Goddess Date: 15 Jun 07 - 02:17 PM Aw, Sins, nobody is out spending money after 2:30-3 pm. In this neck of the woods, most yardsales have shut down by then. Give it up or make the last person a heck of a deal to take everything, then jump in the car. By the way, I don't need enough organ pipes to build a luau hut. Linn |
Subject: RE: Shanty/Forebitter session for June (NH) From: Bat Goddess Date: 16 Jun 07 - 10:25 AM Had a really hot mandolin player from Seattle acccidently wander into The Press Room last night during the session -- good voice, too. He and his wife may show up at the session today. He said he's frequented the same sessions as Deckman. Linn |
Subject: RE: Shanty/Forebitter session for June (NH) From: Charley Noble Date: 16 Jun 07 - 10:50 AM Linn- Looks like it will only be Judy and myself coming down this afternoon. I wonder if I ran into the mandoline player at my house concert in Seattle a few years ago. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Shanty/Forebitter session for June (NH) From: Charley Noble Date: 17 Jun 07 - 10:10 AM There were a dozen or so stalwarts in attendence, including Tom, which made for a fine circle of singing, ample turns for everyone. Let's see, besides Tom and Linn and Judy and myself, there were Peter (?), Jeff Warner, Barbara Benn, Peter and Joann, Carol, and Barry. I revived one old song I haven't sung in years "The Bold Benjamin" and introduced one new one, "The Chantey Cook" by sailor poet Harry Kemp. I also led "West Indies Blues," "Bound Away" by sailor-poet Bill Adams, "Mid-Watches" by sailor-poet Burt Franklin Jenness, and "Lee Fore Brace" by C. Fox Smith and "The Mariner's Compass is Grog." Unfortunately I'll have to miss the July gathering given that I'm responsible for coordinating musical entertainment at the annual Richmond Days Festival in my home town. I do urge folks to consider attending the every so annual China Sea Marine Trading Co. song party and bash later this month on Saturday, June 30th, 6 pm, to be held at Capt. Bunker's barn in Gray, Maine, 20 minutes north of Portland (see other thread for details). Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Shanty/Forebitter session for June (NH) From: Bat Goddess Date: 17 Jun 07 - 12:13 PM Started out fairly quietly -- took awhile to get a quorum. Charlie & Judy arrived were first arrivals (besides Tom and I) and others showed up one or two at a time across the nest coupla hours -- then some who had other commitments, left one or two at a time. Good session, though -- a lot of us sang material we hadn't sung in public for awhile. The Friday sessions have started out sparsely populated, too -- when the weather's good. Summer is too short and people seem to want to take advantage of the daylight. Did have several groups of Portsmouth Maritime Festival salwarts show up to listen -- plus a table of very loud talkers -- a couple of whom, when they left, told us how much they enjoyed our singing. (Amazing that they heard any of it!) Linn |
Subject: RE: Shanty/Forebitter session for June (NH) From: Charley Noble Date: 17 Jun 07 - 02:04 PM Linn- We certainly enjoyed ourselves as did everyone else. Here's a link to some of the pictures that Judy took that capture some of what was going on: Click here for a good time! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Shanty/Forebitter session for June (NH) From: Jeri Date: 17 Jun 07 - 02:31 PM I had what felt like allergies, then I thought it be a cold. I just went outside and pulled some milkweed, and my sinuses cleared out in minutes. Allergy, and obviously not to pollen. I still have some chest congestion and I'm croaky. Anyhow, that's why I wasn't there. |
Subject: RE: Shanty/Forebitter session for June (NH) From: Charley Noble Date: 17 Jun 07 - 03:40 PM Jeri- We certainly missed you. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Shanty/Forebitter session for June (NH) From: Bat Goddess Date: 17 Jun 07 - 08:18 PM Thank you. Charlie and Judy, for posting the pictures! (In both places, special thanks!) Linn |
Subject: RE: Shanty/Forebitter session for June (NH) From: TRUBRIT Date: 17 Jun 07 - 09:02 PM The pictures were great -- isn't it amazing how quickly every one gets a sun tan when we have had barely any sun????????? We had a nice (non folkey but still nice) gathering at my house and then I viisted with Kendall and Jacqui today so it was almost as good as being there....... |
