Subject: Looking for a song circle in Portland OR
From: Mark Roffe
Date: 10 Apr 99 - 03:16 PM

Went to my first song circle last night (in Sacramento - thanks for informing me, Joe!). Told my sister in Portland Oregon about what fun it was -- and now we've got to help her find one around Portland.

I've done some forum searches - found 392 threads with "song circle" in the subject (but no clues as to where they are). Adding search condition of "Portland" in the message body yielded just one thread, which turned out to be a question from Joe Offer looking for song circles in a few cities.

Portland has one every Monday night, and one every second Saturday. Portland Folklife Society (not sure this is the exact name) has a homepage with all events listed. -- MA

Aw, I was sure Blessings Barbara would jump in on this one. I do get a certain evil pleasure out of beating her to the punch. Click here, Mark. It sure was nice to have you and your guitar and your new songs at the Sacramento song circle last night. I hope you'll become a regular. You added a little class to our act....

Thanks for the information, MAG and Joe. I forwarded it my sister.

She's named Linda, and she's sending her son to the attic in search of her old Sing Out! magazines to loan me. It was in a 1967 issue she'd previous lent me that I found the melody for "Goodbye to the 30 Ft. Trailer" by Ewan MacColl that we sang last night. I'll bring it to next month's song circle.

A month?!?...I can't possibly wait that long. I had such a fine time with the fine folks there.

Don't make your sister look too hard, Mark. Remember, you're at the Mudcat Cafe, home of the world-renowned Digital Tradition folk Song Database. You can find the song and tune by putting trailer in the search box at the upper-right corner of this page, or you can click here. I have a copy of it in the Collected Reprints from Sing Out!. It's a great song. I'm glad you introduced it to us.

Well, you're right, Joe, I would have jumped on it, only I was in Portland at the PFS second Saturday song circle. This is absolutely true. (It was also our host's 50th birthday).
Blessings
Barbara
