Subject: Lyr Req: Waiting by the shore? From: Jim Lad Date: 13 Jun 07 - 03:37 AM I'm trying to remember a song about a girl, waiting by the sea shore for her young lover to return. Anyone? |

From: Kevin Sheils Date: 13 Jun 07 - 04:35 AM Well it might as well be anyone who turns up 'cause she won't recognise him, he'll pretend to be someone else, then he'll produce some dodgy token which he stole from a dead soldier and have his wicked way. Probably! ;-) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Waiting by the shore? From: GUEST,Terry McDonald Date: 13 Jun 07 - 04:56 AM Long Years Ago? Long years ago, when I was young The lambs did play and the birds they sung A sailor and his lovely bride Lay sleeping by the ocean side. It's scarce six months since we were wed And oh how quick the time has sped And I must go, at the break of day On the big ship waiting out in the bay. The time goes by and he comes no more While she sits waiting by the ocean shore His ship went down in the howling of the storm And the waves conceal his lifeless form. I wish that I were with him too, Beneath the waves of the ocean blue I'd lie asleep at the bottom of the sea And let the great green waves beat over me. I learned this from a compilation LP entitled 'A Pinch of Salt - British Sea Songs Old and New' in 1960/61. It was sung by Shirley Collins and the sleeve notes say she'd learned it from John Hasted who collected it from a soldier during the second word war. |

From: harpmolly Date: 13 Jun 07 - 11:22 PM Kevin...ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!! :D You just made my day. ;) Yes, there really are a whole bunch of these "broken token" songs. I've even heard songs that didn't start out that way turned INTO a broken token song ("Plains of Waterloo?!?! What the hell?!?!) Anyway, some examples: Banks of Claudy, There Was A Lady, Willie and Mary...the list goes on and on. Then there's my version. :) Cheers, Molly |
