Howdy! It's been a while. I thought I'd better report on some research I conducted Tuesday night on Woody's Bold 'n Spicy. It (the research, that is) was extensive. To be thorough, I even reproduced my experiment the following night to verify that I could duplicate the results. I am pleased to say they were consistent -- and wonderful.

The thing about Woody's Bold 'n Spicy is that it's opaque, so the resulting drink is quite muddy. It is, however, delicious. Due to its lack of clarity and red-brown color, I thought I'd call it…

Woody's Big Muddy Martini

5 parts gin (I used 90-proof Hendrick's Scottish Gin)
1 part dry Vermouth (I used Martini extra dry)
1 part olive juice (I used BevMo Dirty Martini Olive Juice)
1/4 to 1/2 part Woody's Bold 'n Spicy, to taste

Shake with ice (stirring isn't sufficient to get the Woody's into solution). Pour into a chilled glass. Garnish with good olive(s) and a red chili.

Just dropping in to say that as a thank-you for starting this thread that kept the brand going, Woody's just sent me one of the first ten bottles of the new "Bold 'n Spicy" flavor that is about to premiere. It is wonderful, as are the memories of this long Mudcat episode.

I will always be happy that I started this thread and, in my way, helped keep Woody's alive.

You gathered the Country to insist that Woody's come back, which motivated Richard to buy the brand and restart production, which motivated me to help him distribute Woody's to friends on this very thread.

THAT certainly didn't turn out like I thought! I thought I would just help friends get the sauce (and me too), and when it came back on the shelves, that would be the end of it.

Little did I dream that it would become so big, or that I would become part owner and Vice President of the company. I just never imagined it. Remember, as Vice President, my FIRST duty is to keep the business running and the supply continuing, if something happens to the President.

No, Claire, you single-handedly set the stage for the comeback of an American Tradition. You set the stage and worked to save a part of American Life - and you succeeded.

Good subsitiute for Woody's cook-in sauce is product called "Stubb's"
Can be located a most Kroger Grocery Stores. The label has a picture
of black man (African American) on the front of jar. However I'm still trying to locate the Woody's Cook-in sauce. My elderly Aunt died in March had used it for over 40 yrs. She swore that in cooking her Beef Brisket without it,that it would not taste the same. Our family wants to carry on the tradition of using her recipe by giving it to our next generation. I certainly didn't mean to scare you or anybody, and I'm sorry if I did. No, no, Woody's is in good hands, and now that his marketing is taking off and the brand is regaining footing, many food people are kicking themselves in the butt for not doing what Richard did. They can't believe that - and by a non food industry person to boot - he pulled off such a "coup".

Of course, that's only after a year and a half of hard, smart, work on his part. Remember, he was just like any of us - a Woody's fan. But instead of trying to make a duplicate, he just went to New Orleans and had a chat with Riley Foods in person.

It's no secret that there will be expanded lines in the future. I have already suggested a Romoulade sauce - based on some I had in New Orleans not too long ago - and a Louisania Red Pepper sauce.

I think I can promise you, although this thread is long and has taken a long break, it is FAR from over. Woody's is back FOR KEEPS!

BTW, The Internet in general, and this thread in particular, was the EXACT reason Woody's is back! Good work, Claire!

By the way, I'd forgotten this in the latter days of not eating much red meat, but here's another Woody's cooking tip from my culinary past:

the Woody's/hoisin sauce combination I mentioned earlier, about one part each for this application, also does amazing things for lamb. I used to use it on double-thick lamb chops for the broiler, back when I could afford them. I imagine it wuld be terrific on a butterflied leg of lamb for indirect cooking on the barbecue grill.

I wasn't asking anybody to do anything. Things are going swimmingly well, and I guess that was the point of me posting. Just to check in. I certainly don't need to advertise my little web store, my biggest challenge is finding time to fill orders.

The new owner of Woody's and I have become friends over the last year and a half. In fact, I talked to him today. It seems I was mistaken about the "one heartbeat" stuff. He has made sure that the brand will carry on, even if something unfortunate were to happen. You have my word on that.

I recently helped him cook Woody's tri-tip for 200 people at a baseball game. Speaking of the 4th, some of that meat made it to our barbecue that day and it was delicious!

Interesting how this Internet can change things.

Oh no, surely not again! I've been buying it as often as I can, honest. Served chicken a la Woody's on the 4th of July, even.

(For chicken, I marinate in 3/4 Woody's, 1/4 hoisin sauce, then grill. Terrific!)

So Bill, what can one do, other than buy as much sauce as one can afford?

And, I hate to ask, but if it should go away forever, do you think there is any hope of getting a recipe?

Folks, I haven't forgotton about you!

When I first started offering Woody's on my little web site, it was with you in mind. I figured I would offer the sauce to my friends here, and when Woody's came back on the shelves, that would be the end of it. I really liked the new owner, and he let me offer the sauce to a hungry America. Or, at least the friends made here.

It didn't turn out that way, did it?

Woody's is now available in THOUSANDS of stores, yet shipping Woody's has grown, month after month. I now buy Woody's - not by the jar - but by the 1,400 lb LOT.

The new owner of Woody's, Richard, is still PASSIONATE about the brand - and the flavor! In fact, I taught him a thing or two about how to use it. I can tell you this: He bought Woody's not even knowing what it tasted like on pork ribs!

I have done some work for him, with no possability of compensation, nor reimbursement. Actually, I have no problem with that. Having met him in person recently, I LIKE him.

One concern: Woody's is literally ONE HEARTBEAT away from going. Again. Forever.

Just found Woody's back on the shelf at Wal-Mart. It was not with the other BBQ sauces, but over near the asian sauces. I just happened to stumble on it. Same glass jar and lid, painted white lettering and in the $3 range. I actually was looking for wing sauce to cook with. If this is already known by everyone on here, sorry for the duplication.

As promised: the Woody Mary review

One and a half ounces of vodka, 8 ounces of spicy V-8, and one-half tablespoon (1-1/2 tsp) of Woody's, shaken with ice and finished with the juice of 1/4 lime is a good start. But next time (that'd be tonight), I plan to try a teensy bit less Woody's (say, one teaspoon instead of one and a half) and use lemon juice instead of lime. I'm also thinking of thinning the V-8 by adding some seltzer.

It's also my wedding anniversary and would've been my father's 101st birthday, which should have reminded me anyway, but I think the brain cell storing that particular connection must've gone pfffftt! sometime in the last 12 months.

Back on duty from my New Orleans vacation. I was surprised, I could not find one reference to Woody's in it's birth-city.

While I was gone, I had posted big notices on my web site saying that I was not shipping orders until I returned. Do you know what happened to the order numbers? The pace PICKED UP! I shipped out my first wave of orders today, and it was among the biggest shipment I have ever made. I have another similar wave to send, tomorrow.

I talked to the owner of Woody's today, and he anticipated that I would need more supply. He actually reserved a shipment for me outside of the normal demand - which is becoming huge - so I (and you) could have an uninterrupted supply!

Is that cool, or what?

But today on KERA-FM in Dallas/Fort Worth someone called in to the Friday "Anything You Ever Wanted to Know" call in program and asked about this. A couple of other callers said it is avialable. They bought it at Kroger grocery stores here in the North Texas area.

After finding this thread some time ago, and learning that Woody's is available once again, I ordered 12 jars through foodlocker.com 4 weeks ago. Now today I recieve an email from them saying they are cancelling my order due to they will no longer be stocking Woody's.
I am naturally not happy with this, especially after waiting for 4 weeks for it to arrive.
Has anyone else had this happen to them?
Is Woody's really available or not?

of the few online vendor's I had found, foodlocker.com was the cheapest, but that has obviously not worked out to my benefit.

can anyone here tell me where to order at a reasonable price, and it will actually get delivered?

I don't think it tastes at all "horrible" from the jar, but that said, I can't imagine using it like a standard sauce -- i.e., to be brushed or poured on meat that's already grilled. That might actually be pretty unpleasant.

Cook-In' Sauce is designed to be used as a marinade before cooking. I use it as is for that with pieced chicken, salmon, and catfish (it does amazing things for catfish), marinating the whatever in Woody's for 30 minutes (fish) to a few hours (chicken), and then grilling, broiling, or baking the item in question. We don't eat red meat or I'd use it for that too: I'm intrigued by the classic "Woody's brisket" that so many Texans, especially, longed for while Woody's was unavailable.

Woody's is terrific because, not being sweet, it's far less likely to blacken to charcoal on the grill or in the oven than a sweet sauce.

I have also used it mixed about 50/50 with hoisin sauce for lamb, pork, and chicken, when I want an Asian flavor. Hoisin sauce is pretty sugary, so then you do have to be careful about overbrowning, but the taste is wonderful. Woody's can also be added judiciously to other barbecue sauces designed to be used after cooking, to make them less cloyingly sweet.

I've just remembered that I still haven't tried the "Woody Mary" we were joking about a few months ago. Maybe this weekend.

hello i am certainly greatful that Woody's is back. I would like to know how everyone uses the sauce. The reason I ask is I have a friend who turned me on to Woody's and he even gave me a batch. I say batch because he adds to it to get it to taste the way he likes it. Does everyone else do the same or do you just use it straight from the jar? I was told that it has a horrible taste right from the jar. I do love the way he doctors it up.

Another load safely in the SFFDGear vaults tonight, and those vaults are now FULL! The vaults are alarmed, people are watching on scene, and the grounds are patrolled by a Guard Dog!

Of course, I'm having fun. The vaults are real, the alarms are real, but the armed convoy is because my son has, well, arms! Two of them in fact! He uses them to drive. The people on watch are tenants who live above my shop, and the guard dog is a yappy poodle belonging to one of the tenants, who roams the yard.

Probably just as effective as the "armed camp" picture I'm painting.

Of course the sauce resupply is real enough, and that's what counts. And I'm having fun bringing your sauces to you. That's real, too, and it counts.

I've had my "Woody's" ready for a springtime cook-out and was ready to do it up when my wife called me on the cell phone and she asked me to pick up a few more potato's for the ^%*&%* and cabbage she had BOILING on the stove.

I finally scored some Woodys in Northern Cal even though their Website says in is not available here. It has a 2010 expiration date so I assume it is new stuff. I am ready to get back to the grill!
