Neil? SOLD!!! How much is shipping to Fortuna?
Just kidding You may want to sell it on Ebay and retire. Or send some to Sorcha, Claire, Bill, Janet, Brian etc. so you all can come up with Woody's secret and live happily ever after. Retirement without Woody's? As DR. Smith would say, "OOOHH, The pain".
Sorry to here the news. Is this where we shoot the messenger in hopes the bad news goes away? Oh, wait.. That was Bill. He has good ideas on recipes. That would be counter-productive. Forgive me, Bill.

I usually like to be the purveyor of at least workable recipes, but I think I may have to blow the whistle because something seems wrong! Very wrong. If you look at the "NEW" woody's website, it shows that it hasn't been correctly published. For weeks.

If you try to look it up - well, let's just say difficult if not impossible!

I think we may have been trolled! We MAY have been fooled into thinking that Woody's may be coming back, but it may never will be!

Has anybody ever checked to see if "Woodys Foods Inc" was ever incorporated in Nevada? Supposedly, they were out of Reno.

I call schananigans! I call Fraud! Ladies and Gentlemen of this thread, start your crockpots!

Woody's Cook-in sauce will NOT return, unless we make it ourselves! Woody's Foods of Nevada does not exist, as far as I can tell.

End of Message

Anybody seen it anywhere? I have'nt seen anything at all posted! You can type woody's in any manner you wish on Google and there is no info on the product starting back up. You would think they would make an anouncement of some sort? I even typed in woody's foods reno nevada and nothing!

Hey, Neil.

I don't remember who mentioned the "Woody mary" or the "Bloody Woody" But I did remember that it had Woody's in it. I didn't add pepper, as Woody's has lots of it. And I LOVE the smoke!
Maybe if I added tomato juice it would be more acceptable to the normal bloody mary drinker, but I don't know. I just love Woody's
If you think of a way that Woody's can be incorporated into a real drink.. That would be way cool.
Being from WAY way northern Ca. We don't have access to alligator poo or armadillo puree but if you can come up with essence of Sasquatch extract that would be a hit on the north coast.
Anyway the Woody Mary was good for me.

Well...She got the subtle hint. To bad, she could have been a great asset to this thread.

Darrell -- Goodness, you're brave! The oil must have made for an interesting drink.

I wonder if it would be worth making a batch with no oil just for mixed-drink purposes? Must ponder that...

Has anyone spotted new bottles of Woody's on store shelves? I asked the nice anonymous e-mail recipient at Woody's Foods to post to this thread when the product is actually in production, but I have no idea if they will. After all, why would they want to communicate with scores of loyal Woody's fans at once?

Claire

Thank you all. Been following this thread since early sept. and have been copying all of your recipes. I have one bottle left and am anxiously waiting for a recipe you all consider "spot on".
I'm no chef by all means. That's why I use woody's. All of you ARE chefs. That's why you create woody's
I had to try the "Woody-Mary" before my last bottle disappers, and ...well... it wasn't bad.
Thanks again. Darrell

If you use peanut oil, be SURE to tell the people who are going to eat it! There might be a peanut allergy in the house! Almost any other mild oil would be better.

Hey SFB
One thing I left out of my last recipe post was water, witch is good! I was thinking on the water as the first ingredient should have the highest amount but think about it their's water in all the liquid ingredient added. I thaught about this when I was reducing my vinegar, what good is this doing when I'm goinna add more water to it? Well enough of the B.S. if anyone wants to try it here it is:
3/4 cp wine vinegar
2 cps white vinegar
8 zs liquid hickory smoke
3 tbls. kosher salt
6 tbls. soy sauce
4 tbls. worch. sauce
1 tbls. celery seed (I might leave this out next time sems to have a over powering after taste)
2tbls. onion powder
2 tbls. garlic powder
1 tbls. paprika
1 tbls. chili powder
2tbls. karo syrup
4 tbls. peanut oil
let simmer for about an hour then add 2-6 z cans tomato paste whisk well and it's done no water it looks brownish so maybe this is where the red food color comes in. It taste pretty good to me hey I might jar it up and sell road side as                                     *NEILLY'S FAMOUS FOR NOTHIN COOKIN SAUCE*

"RIP OFF !!!"
When the company takes a nosedive..and authentic patrons attempt to rectify the situation through phone calls and e-mails, from WA, NB, CA,MN, MA, NC....awe heck..everyhere......WITH NO ANSWER ????
Whatever, the recipes you may see here are DEFINATELY NOT rip offs !!
If you would take the time to read the posts, you would understand that ANY attempts to "Copy" this recipe have only been a result of a lazy attitude from Reily Foods and all inquiries from Customers and Suppliers concerning the future of Woody's.
When NO answers were given, and the future unsure, any attempts to reproduce a "DEAD" product are most assuredly NOT "rip offs".
Sorry...just tired of seeing "dumb" responses here.

By the way..I'll be in Mobile and Southern Louisianna in a week or so and, I'm gonna research my Alligator poo idea (LOL)

Read the past posts to figure That one out !!

Thats about how much I yeilded and I kept going back and forth from mine to the original woody's and it really seemed that the smoke flavoring in the woody's was quite a bit stronger kind of like that fealing you get from horseradish (nasal rush) if you know what I mean. I consumed so much salt that day it probably raised my B.P..My next batch will be the same with more smoke I'll reduce the first ingredient more to intensify the smoke, vinegar? It looks like the word about Woody's hasen't got to Ebayer's the price is still high!

As long as it takes to get the real thing back. Challenges are a good thing if it wasn't for blog such as this the importance of this product would have never been taken to this level, and the most important thing is the way myself and others here have learned to make a copycat version of a great sauce as a matter of fact I have come up with a few other recipes while trial and error of the copycat. Just keep cookin folks its becoming a dieing art !

Thanks Neil. I'm looking forward to your recipe and seeing how it jibes with mine and the ladies'. My #2 cook recipe is now way back there, is close, but no cigar.

It's worthy of note that your ingredient label is different than mine with a July 2008 "Best By" date. Mine says: Water, tomato paste, soybean oil, vinegar, spices, liquid hickory smoke, high fruitcose corn syrup, salt, garlic powder, sugar, flavoring, hydrolyzed soy protein, potassium sorbate as a preservative, caramal color, sodium benzotate as a preservative, zanathan gum, and red 40.

There were some changes made indeed!

My Tahoe find - Identified only as "26223" has the following: Water, tomato paste, Soybean oil, white and wine vinegars, Hickory smoke, Salt, Sugar, Soy Sauce, caramel color, Anchovies, onions, Tamarinds, Flavoring, Xanathan Gum, Potasium Sorbate and less than 0.1% of Sodium benzotate as preservatives and FD&C No. 40.

No Garlic powder listed on the older label, and no anchovies, tamarinds nor onions listed on the newer one. Interesting!

WOODY'S

As I stated earlier the sodium (salt) is the biggest factor in the sauce (gives that first bite when placed to the tongue) as well to make the sauce be absorbed into the meat. I can take a 30 lb ham and salt cure it for 21 days and it will be flavored to the bone with salt or flavor of any others seasonings mix with. Now on my jar of 2005 woody's ingredients in order are as listed: Water, Tomato Paste, Soybean Oil, White and Wine Vinegar, Hickory Smoke, Spices, Salt, Sugar, Caramel Color, Anchovies, Onions, Tamarinds, Flavoring, Xanthan Gum, Potassium Sorbate and less than 1% Sodium Benzoate and red #40 .
Now you say salt is # 7 on the list but if you are measuring by liquid weight that's about where it will end up. The one before it is spices, well of coarse by the time you add ground mustard, ground celery seed (bitter seasonings) and so forth you will come up with a higher volume. Then you have soy sauce after salt well we all know what soy sauce has in it? Caramel coloring as I stated earlier this is Kitchen Bouquet as the ingredients list: onions and about 5 other veggies and sodium benzoate. Anchovies, onions and Tamarinds are at the end of the list along with the amount of potassium sorbate less than 0.1% so that tells me these are the ingredient of Worcestershire sauce.
There's no need for extra tamarind as some had guessed. The other thing it does not need slow cooking for long period, brings the tomato flavor out. I don't add any thickeners, Preservatives' or colorants. For added bitterness Snake root can be added. All you have to do is break it down as as what wasent done before look at the nutri. facts on the jar! Hope this helps Neil

When I e-mailed, I suggested to the autoresponder at Woody's Foods that they post an announcement on this thread when the new Woody's is actually in production.

I would think it would be better to ask one's grocery store chain to stock the product once there's actually a product for it to stock. At least, If I were Safeway or Raleys buyer, I would think I would be annoyed if I were pressed to contact a company about stocking a product only to find out, upon contacting it, that there is no product yet...

Or, on the other hand, does a start-up company like the new Woody's need to have Safeway and Raleys orders on the books before they will go into production?

What do you all think?

Claire

Lots of dedication from ya'll sauce fans and a lot of hard work went into what I've been following on the Woody's thread (as a home-canner, my hat is off to all that tried for a duplicate recipe, safe canning process, etc.).

Just a note to add to the "Woody's resurrection saga" that I've so enjoyed reading about... Don't know if this may be old news or not, but I emailed the "info@woodyscookin.com" address and got this auto reply today:

"Dear Woody's Consumer,

Woody's Foods is now the new owner of the world famous WOODY'S Cook-in' and Sweet 'n Sour BBQ and Marinade Sauces. We are working diligently in getting WOODY'S sauces back onto your neighborhood grocery shelves within the next few weeks. To expedite this process, please contact your local grocer to ensure WOODY'S will be available to you.

Woody's Foods will continue with the same traditional quality ingredients and containers you have become accustomed to.

We will notify you by email when Woody's sauces are available.

Thank you for your patience and support!

Sincerely,

Consumer Affairs
Woody's Foods"

I'm assuming from the email content, that my address has been added to their list of consumer fans eagerly awaiting notification of the release of the new production line for purchase (I had requested info on both south GA retail locations, and possible online consumer purchase resources - but it WAS just an auto reply, so I'll continue to hold my breath, and taste buds, a little longer in hopes of a more personal and specific communique).

Best of luck to all who worked hard to keep the Woody's flame burning bright.

A BBQ fan~~~gg

Just back from a run to the family cabin at Lake Tahoe. Score! There was a bottle of Woody's - with the original painted bottle - hidden in the locked closet!

I notice that the Woody's website is still inactive, and none of the stores at LT have it in stock. Reno to Tahoe isn't that far of a run, is it?

One would figure that someone that paid money for the brand and recipe would be anxious to promote it.....

For MrMog: If you read back, the lead issue in the Woody's labeling was handled some time ago, and the newer replacements had white print on clear plastic labels - so the lead problem was solved, well before Reily Foods discontinued the product. Therefore, lead was NOT the reason the product was discontinued. I believe the original explination - "It wasn't selling like it used to". With a zero advertising budget for the last 50 years - who could have possibly seen THAT coming?

The newer labels no longer showed the presence of Tamarinds or Anchovy. It introduced corn syrup for the first time, and a much less presence of sugar.

My theory is that the Tamarinds and Anchovy were replaced by "Flavors" from a chemical plant, which is a popular thing for food makers to do these days.

One other thing I noticed is that the printing on the bottles. The new "sticker" labels have about 15% SMALLER type than the painted ones. It's almost like they wanted LESS attention on store shelves.

Michael, I'm delighted to hear that your lack of enthusiasm for the sauce after smoking it didn't extend to the brisket. Phew!

Sorcha, I received your sause safely but haven't opened it yet; I figured I should wait until I at least knew when the cook-in is going to happen. Though, honestly, I think all that vinegar and salt will prederve it just fine, even unsealed.

Anyway, thank you (!!!) -- and let me know if you'd rather I went ahead and tasted.

Claire

The (supposedly) lead-containing ink is on the outside of the jar, no? I don't see that as a concern, unless you're in the habit of licking drips off the side of the jar.

Had a great slow-smoked brisket yesterday, along with Claire's Faux Woody's. Yumm!

Cheers,
Michael

That sounds suspicious, I wouldn't send that amount of money...

It was spam and so deleted.

Earlier I had both an e-mail response and a phone call returned from the folks at Reily. While neither responded to my question why production was halted (except to say it was "a business decision")a local retailer here in Northern California told us they had received a letter informing them that the product should be pulled from shelves because of lead in the paint used in packaging, i.e. the bottle and lid.

This explains the sudden disappearance of a seemingly successful product, though the method is odd...why not use new packaging and continue? (I know, liability issues, but those would seem to remain.)

Anyway, glad to learn that the deal to re-launch Woody's is done and we'll see our treasured sauce back on the shelves...not sure we can barbecue chicken without it! (Marinate with Woody's, garlic salt and sherry.)

However, no reply to an inquiry regarding the safety of existing stocks of Woody's for those of us with a bottle or two left.

Woody's Cookin Sauce has been sold to a start up company called Woody's Foods PO Box 34477 Reno Nevada 89523-9998 email address info@woodyscookin.com. They have just started production and need to get the product out and back on grocery shelves. It has been discontinued by most chains so please forward this information and ask your local store manager to get it authorized and order some.

If you look at the sodium amout oon the woody's jar a 2 Tbls. serving contains 490 mg sodium @ 11 servings per jar = 5390 mgs sodium per 13 oz jar. Table salt is roughly 2325 mgs per tbls. soy sauce is about 1160 mgs per tbls. The sharp bite in woody's is the sodium content so if you make 3 pints you would have to add around 18865 mgs sodium a little over 8 tbls. salt or 16 tbls soy sauce or a combination of the two since they are both listed on the label. I think the caramel color is kitchen bouquet as it list spices and sodium benzoate as a preservative hope this might help

I mailed a jar of my #2 to Claire. It should have arrived by now. It smells right, but we were rather dissapointed in the taste. Pretty sure no okra or bacon fat! LOL!

I'll see what the others say when they open it. Sure wish I could be there for the Taste In!
