Difficult to keep track of what folkies are going to be on where, there are so many stages, many of which are not in the official programme. Would be really grateful if anybody would put on this thread any details of bands they'd like to draw other people's attention to. So if you're playing, or you've just heard about a good gig, dig in.
    I'll start the ball rolling with a little letter I've just sent out to a few muso and journo peoples.

Hi Everybody
This letter is going to various people I am hoping to meet up with at Glastonbury, and various others who may or may not be interested.
It's difficult to find out what is going on there, it is such a huge festival with so many stages, not all in the programme, so here are a few hints Nor everyone knows about Sheelanagig, well worth a look and a listen. A newish band from Bristol, to be found on the Avalon Stage at the rather unearthly hour of 11.30AM on Saturday morning. They have a very eclectic kind of sound, not really a standard folk act but in that territory.A very unusual sound, not at all like the products of courses at well-known north-eastern universities. Fiddly, Irishy, Kletzmery, Jazzy, etc etc. Lots of different stuff in there.Good pub band I would say. Definitely merits a detour.
   My other hot tips are all in the Croissant-Neuf marquee(Green Fields site) on Sunday afternoon.
Biggles Wartime Band at 1PM Spectaularly funny, ridiculous, loads of cultural influences, best traditions of British eccentricity.
2.30PM is the Boat Band, what can you say? Be there or be square.Get in touch if you want to sit in, we have a longstanding tradition(could be our tenth appearance?) at Glastonbury of people joining us on stage. Come and find us for a chat in the camp behind the marquee, we generally have a nice fire and a a bit of music. Or give us a ring.
5.30PM I haven't actually seen this band, but I am really looking forward to. I know Rachael Gladwin's singing and harp playing well, and she is now with a harp trio, called, rather daringly, the Harp Trio. This is their first Glastonbury, and what nicer chillout than three harps on Sunday afternoon? Not sure what they play, jazzy stuff I think, and some trad perhaps? I am looking forward to finding out, very much. And, by the way, the harps are those wooden things with strings, not the ones Sonny Terry sticks in his mouth.
   Now, judging by the times, there's probably someone else on at 4PM, but I don't know who.
   Have a nice festival(if you are going). I shall have a good wander round and hopefully find the usual range of aural and visual treats, and I am sure you will too.

I hear The Waterboys are playing all 3 days including the acoustic tent yet again.They really do put on a great show.Also get there early to whichever stage they are playing.Have the best of times everyone.

I'm a 'tourist' and I'd do Glatonbury given half a chance. Too bad I'm in US and it just costs too much to get there from here.

Sorry about this, Yookers, but I LOVED Glastonbury...tourii traps and all. I'd have spent all day at the Chalice Well Gardens if I could have even if it was raining.

A festival there sounds wonderful

Don't even talk about it...

We registered, we sat on the computers for the ticket rush... But no tickets, all sold out in under an hour I think. Our puter couldn't connect to the website

There were 6 of us planning to go in a group, only 4 of us (and not me and the t'other) got the tickets.

I'm gutted... Our pals are making there way this morning to Glasto, and I sincerely wish them a fab time.

BUT, it's raining raining raining... There was a monsoon of a thunder and lightening storm on Tuesday (which flooded our house by the way - kitchen and garage) and in Glastonbury a whole monthfull of rain fell in 30 minutes (about 4inchs). It rained yesterday and guess what folks.... it's raining today again. Plus it's cold.

So, they're off, but they are worrying about the rain and worrying about their VW's getting stuck in the mud...And I really wish I was going...

sigh... oh well...

My son and his mates didn't get tickets this year so the went to GlastonBudget instead and had a fabulous time. they would recommend it to anyone...

Hope you enjoy the almighty mud bath and noise fest.
Just saw some quagmire on TV and I'm thankful I don't have to endure it or clean myself up after it!
I'm probably just getting old.
Beverley, last weekend, was brill and Cleckheaton, Saddleworth and Warwick will be big enough festivals for me to enjoy! I don't do huge crowds.
PS It's currently dry and sunny here!

Can someone please tell me why the BBC have five presenters on a programme which is supposed to be about music but is actually about five presenters saying how great everyone is, except we are not allowed to bloody see them because all we get if the FIVE BLOoDY PRESENTERS so there is no time to see any music -and that Jo WHiley really gets up my nose daft cow!!! Gosh I feel better now!

Watching a bit on the BBC - haven't seen anything I liked yet, but then they have a genius for picking the wrong stuff pretty well every festival they cover.

I bet they won't put the Boat Band on screen, for example.

I was looking at Rufus Wainwright. Not for too long though. I've never had the patience to listen to him long enough to hear anything I liked. Am I missing something?

Still I'm sure there's lots of good music going on there, and greg will find it. Apart from making it himself.

BBC 2 has just shown Dame Shirley Bassey's set. I am minded of that great exchange from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

I think most folk perfomers are being kept away from the stages where the BBC put the cameras. However, in Radio Times I see that a picture of Seth Lakeman appears against the "best of" the Jazz World Stage highlights to be shown on BBC 4 at 9pm this Friday. Which is odd, because when they printed Radio Times he hadn't even performed yet, so how did they know that was going to be one of the highlights?

Sorcha - Glastonbury (the festival) has little to do with Glastonbury (the town) - it isn't even held there, but at Pilton, a few miles away. And we're not talking cosy event, with the opportunity to go to Chalice Well, go up the Tor etc - i think it's something like 167,000 people. Hate you to go one year and it not be what you were looking for.

The very last live performance, at 2am on Monday, was Spiers and Boden in the on-site BBC studio (acts on the stages had to finish at 12.30 I think). Their caption called them Spears and Bowden, though.

Glastonbury the Festival has a population 20 times the population of Glastonbury the town. I went in 1995 (I only live 8 miles away now) and it was like a post-apocalyptic Mad Max refugee camp. Not necessarily perfect acoustics or conditions, but a great overall experience.

With something like 2000 acts in 3 days the Beeb couldn't cover everything, but there was a bit of a preponderance of noisy guitar bands on the telly. The curious can check out some of the coverage at http://www.bbc.co.uk/glastonbury/ though I don't know if the video links will work outside the UK.

I found some of the BBC Yoof presenters a bit irritating and barely competent, apart from Lauren Laverne and Phil Jupitus, who were usually witty and on top of their material. Some of the others, I guess, are more radio types not so used to being on TV, and were a bit excitable. They do rather miss the knowledgable, ironic and world-weary but now dead John Peel, who was the calm at the centre of the storm.

Iggy Pop was pretty astonishing - not that I have ever bought a record of his, but the Stooges were fabulously energetic and relentlessly solid while managing to look like they'd just broken out of jail after doing 30 years for sex crimes.

My favouritist band in the whole world, The Broken Family Band, were playing the Avalon stage and doing a specially-penned song on the Today programme on R4 on Saturday morning.

I missed it however (both Glasto and the radio), because I went drag racing to test the car out before we depart for Mongolia.
