George Garside will definitely be at Whitby - it may be worth checking melodeon.net as he usually posts there and it may give some indication of what he's doing as far as workshops are concerned.

George is doing his beginners workshops Mon -Thurs at 10am at the Stakesby Arms, (next to the camp site), and Slow n' Steady sessions in the graveyard spot (5pm) at the Middle Earth Sunday & Wednesday. Also an intermediate w/shop on Fri at the Stakesby Arms, "bellows control & dynamics explored using well known tunes".

Dance, music, song?

For me, I enjoy the Village Music workshops, English music sessions, concertina and melodeon events.

I frequent Middle Earth for music, food and drink and luckily this year I have accommodation just a little further out on the same road.

Most people at some time go in the Tap & Spile, sorry! The Station Inn as it's now called. The Elsinor is popular with the Liverpool & Southport crowd & lots of others, especially Wednesday Lunchtime when 'The Lunchtime Legends' (Nev Grundy, Clive Pownceby, Alison Younger, Chris Harvey) play 2hrs of Rock n' Roll. The Ship is good for Irish Sessions, The Endevour is popular for singing & lots of others, except Sam Smiths pubs, you will find no music or singing in them. I'm not too sure about food as my favorite resturaunt (Garriga's) has changed into an Italian & The Granby had changed hands last year & wasn't as good. In fact the best meal I had last year was in the Metropole, but I had to wait an hour to get it! & of course there is always fish & chips.
As for workshops it depends on what you are interested in,most of the ritual dances are represented by cumulitive workshops, if you want to learn a melodeon then George Garsides beginners course is good, as are most, if not all of the beginners instuments workshops.
If you have a degree of expertise in a given subject, then that is more variable, it depends on what you know & if it's at the right level for you. There are just so many.

Mobile-wise things are much improved over a few years ago. All networks seem to get reasonable cover, though there are still a few blackspots, especially indoors. Used to be that Vodaphone was the only network with much of a service, but that is no longer the case.

If you were in Staithes, however [just a few mile up the coast] I am given to understand that the only network worth a damn is Orange, and even they have big gaps.

Guestjj, Have you bought a season ticket or are you looking for sings and sessions?
Study the programme before you go, there's no time once you are there! Work out the things you MUST NOT MISS, (and hope they're not all at 11.30!), allow yourself plenty of time to get there and get a seat - it can take 20mins from one venue to another, if late you may not get in. Then fill in the gaps with things you'd like to go to, fish & chip workshops etc.
And have a go at something new, I arrived in plenty of time for a session last year, and found myself with a set of pipes under my arm (I got dragged into a Morris set, the same way once). All part of the fun.
There are some good concerts too, and dances.

And if you joined George's crash course in a previous year and want to know what to do next, I will be running a "next step" melodeon workshop on Monday at 10 am in the Middle Earth (at least that's what it says here - I advise checking when you get there). You don't *have* to have been to George's course, it's really for anyone who's just got off the ground but still considers themselves a comparative beginner.

The festival doesn't officially start until Saturday, but I've found (or, more accurately, helped to start) singarounds in the formerly Tap and Spile now Station Inn and Endeavour on Friday nights in previous years.

I'll be in Whitby on Friday so will be singing in either the Station Inn or the Endeavour. Or possibly both (at different times, on account of not being Hermione Grainger).

For those at Whitby this week... Watch for 2 ladies from Nova Scotia having a great time. Debbie Reeves is a blonde woman from Cape Bretoner who has a powerful voice as well as wonderful songs. Get her to sing some of her own songs, such as Joshua or Wreck of the Ann Amelia or the Family Choir. Bonnie is the dark haired one, knows all of the songs. They both are having a great time. If you see them say hello from the Mudcat!

Anyone got any idea what state Stakesby camp site is in after this weeks rain? A couple or 3 years ago it was v wet & muddy, & cars weren't allowed to leave the site once on. Good news is that the school dinner ladies will be providing food again, very handy as you never get enough time between getting back from the afternoon events to eat & change before the evening concerts start.

buy a programme from the festival office (or I believe also available at the staion inn - opposite bus & train station). Free led musicains sessions various venues 1 -3 and 5 -7pm sat & sun (& everry other day as well) I will be doing a 5 -7pm at the middle earth pub. "well known tunes at a steady pace giving everybody the opportunity to join in".   same again   on wednesday. For those new to the DG melodeon I will be doing my usual 'crash course for beginners' monday to thurs at stakesby arms and an intermediate Dg workshop there on friday.

Looks like for the first time in 10 years my appearances at Whitby may be limited to a day ( or so) this is due to a funeral (julie from Ediie and Julie has sadly died ) accomodation probs, a lucrative afternoon gig in Rotherham on Tuesday and a lucrative compering spot at Shrewsbury ( Bob Harris can't make it Jim next in line !!!)but that's life.
