Given the bizarre choices in swimwear a woman of even reasonable amplitude is given, I would be thrilled to see the swimwear industry collapse.

If people actually saw more naked bodies, perhaps they'd be less assinine regarding them.

when I was young I was a deck chair hire man for a couple of seasons.
As you wander up and down , you wonder what these little genitals have done to deserve being mewed up in nylon and lycra - denied the smallest peep of the sunshine.

I came to the conclusion that things should stay as they are, otherwise the swimming costume industry would collapse.

I think the Uniting Church here is pretty relaxed these days about homosexuality - especially in the city. In fact, they always have a float in the gay and lesbian Mardi Gras.

The Methodist church here actively advertises as "all-inclusive" including showing same-sex couples in their ads.

Methodist have, fortunately, come a long way from the days of no gold wedding rings, no reading the comic section on Sunday, etc.. I just wish they (speaking of the U.S. Church) could get out of the middle ages regarding homosexuality.
I do know one Methodist who was once a Baptist. When he was a Baptist, he disagreed with the church's prohibition of dancing. Then the church he attended dropped that prohibition. So he quit them and became a Methodist. He said that the Baptist church shouldn't have relaxed their standards. Again, just a crazy individual, not the fault of any church.

*sings*
Ya cain't roller skate in a buffalo herd,
Ya cain't roller skate in a buffalo herd,
Ya cain't roller skate in a buffalo herd,
But you can be happy if you've a mind tooooo...

Ah yes, I grew up under the influence of the Methodist Church, where one of the unwritten commandments was definitely "Thou shalt not have fun!" No alcohol, no dancing on a Sunday - or anything else except going to church, having Sunday dinner and doing "the work of the Lord" :-(

I think they've loosened up somewhat since I was a kid though - since they became the Uniting Church. One of my best friends who is an ordained minister is a folkie who's quite happy to sing about "three drunken maidens" and enjoys her Guinness. She's married to a Morris dancer.

Foolestroupe, for a fact, I've met a couple of people so puritanical that they they were really uncomfortable with the idea that they might have a good time. One said he could never go roller skating, as he could see no reason to do that except to enjoy it, and that wasn't an appropriate reason for a Christian to do anything.
(Yes, I think he was crazy).

"puritanism: The haunting fear that someone-somewhere- is having a good time"

Actually that should be

Puritanism: The obsessively haunting fear that someone ELSE - somewhere - anywhere - MAY be having a good time... or at, least, better than they are...

:-)

Sorry, Midchuck, but I knew Jerry Pournelle back about the time he cobbled together that chart, and I know a bit about his thought processes back then. That was before he moved to California and became a well-known science-fiction writer. We used to run into each other a lot at the Blue Moon Tavern (a most famous watering-hole in Seattle's University District).

It's a bit better than the usual "Left-Right continuum," but not much. It doesn't have anywhere near enough possible coordinates to locate someone on the basis of their beliefs. Hardly reliable. You'd have to have something at least three-dimensional.

Don Firth

Most of the people who complain the loudest about nude beaches probably don't go to the beach at all, much less go through the trouble of hiking out to the remote stretches where nude beaches typically are located.

Metchosin, no argument there; where do you think our sandy bottoms spent the afternoon the day before we met you and yours? :)
('scuse me, I mean met your family, not met your sandy bottom :))
Wreck beach is mellow, too; but the Vineyard beach was convenient for us a lot more often.    Dean

Americans are so Puritanical about their bodies it's a sin. I had a friend suspected of abusing his daughter because he didn't make her wear underwear in the bathtub! I am not kidding! He was actually cleared, which is also rare, but I mean really - a dad can't give his daughter a bath without her wearing underwear? What would THAT teach her?

Fer shame, sir. What a gross generality, and how inaccurate. Have you been mainlining Coulter, Limbaugh, or Fox?

Nix. They upset me even more than liberals. Try breaking out of the liberal/conservative dichotomy and really thinking about the issues.

This might help. You're somewhere in the upper right, and you're assuming I must be in the lower right, whereas I'm actually in the upper left.

Peter.

The membership of the Mudcat is composed for the most part of conventional liberals.

The key belief of a modern (as opposed to Classical) liberal is that the government always knows best, and we should trust the government to take care of us because we're too stupid to take care of ourselves.

So - in the words of an Ayn Rand character: "Brother, you asked for it!"

Peter.

Well that's a downright shame. It was a great little beach and didn't harm anyone. Good heavens...hard to imagine folks so uncomfortable with their own birthday suits.

We do have a vineyard here which hosts a nudist colony. Have not been to it, yet, due to health challenges, but those are now gone, so maybe one day when the high altitude sun isn't quite so strong, we'll mosey over and have a look-see.

Drive over to Moonstone Beach in Rhode Island. Last I knew it was still clothing optional. The only time it is closed is when the piping plovers are mating and hatching, which is earlier in the year. Last time we were there, in the 1990's, there were folks swimming in off their yachts and then the townies, etc. all have a wonderful time.

Sorry to hear the Puritans prudes have returned to New England,

My wife and I have had the good fortune, because of a family connection, to be able to spend a few summer days on Martha's Vineyard, affordably, every two or three years. Our primary beach there has been designated "the best strolling beach in America" by the Travel Channel. It has also had another pleasant feature. For at least forty years, possibly a lot longer, a section of the beach has been a no-hassle place to skinny dip, and stretch out on the sand and feel the breezes all over.

I just learned that, this past August, the local authorities decided to save the world from all that sinfulness. They've resolved to crack down, and "end the misconception that this is a nude beach".
Thousands of people have been relaxing in freedom there for decades, no harm to anyone. I don't know if that there is any real hope that anyone will cure the local authorities of the misconception that it isn't a nude beach.
