Rapaire, Man For All Seasons-What a great movie -and Paul Scofield was supreme!! He did not make enough movies.

The grass smells better then the manure-doesn't it? Although I've heard that some farmers afflicted with bad sinus problems sleep in the barn so they can breathe in the glorious aroma. In the morning they're bright eyed & bushy tailed.

Glad you've been alive everywhere! Keep doin' it!

Any special place in Ireland?

4 Jobs - a dibbler....well I don't know what else it would have been called, as a kid I earned pocket money in a greenhouse by transplanting seedlings with a dibble, which was called pricking off. I suspect calling myself a dibbler is better than being called a pricker offer.

- and a draughtsman, amongst other things

4 Movies: A Christmas Carol (with Alastair Sim, of course, the only real Scrooge), Babbette's Feast, Dr. Shivago and O Brother Where Art Thou?

4 Places lived - Sidney BC, St John's Nfld, Vancouver BC and Victoria BC.

4 Favorite Books- .... for some reason or other more recent stuff doesn't crop up on my radar of favourite reads immediately, so mostly from my youth- Steinbeck's Sweet Thursday, Mitchner's Hawaii, Lord of the Rings and a bunch of short stories by Sir Charles GD Roberts

4 Favorite Vacation Spots - the Rocky Mountains, Chesterman Beach, Barcelona and the Rocky Mountains

4 Things that tick me off....I must be feeling rather benign at the moment, because no particular thing comes to mind, but I'm sure when it does, I'll be ticked off allright.

4 Things I'd rather be doing right now...sleeping, sleeping, sleeping, sleeping.

Thanks Janie-that is more or less the reason-it's such a small world-one never knows if another Catter maybe just down the road or had the same job.
There are things to be learned with this thread-some books have been mentioned-one might take an interest in. I've just ordered a book that I saw mentioned on a similar thread. Last month I ordered a CD mentioned by Big Mick. (Black 47)

So far 25 people have thought the subject worthy enough to answer. Oh, excuse me, 24-must deduct Raggytash.

It is the art of conversation in a way. These are the average person's way of getting to know strangers-- just small talk. Lots of threads on Mudcat are pointless. Lots are not. Take your choice.

4 Jobs I have had in my life: Bookstore sales clerk and general helper; Tobacco farm laborer; "ski bum" (general cleanup help, etc. in ski lodge; lawyer (for last 40 of 65 years). I've made a little money singing and picking, but I've never wanted to consider it a "job."

4 Movies I've watched many times: The Outlaw Josey Wales; Young Frankenstein; Blazing Saddles; The Great Race.

4 Places I've Lived: Berkeley, California; Cambridge, MA; Rutland, VT; Pittsford, VT (for last 38 years).

4 Favorite Books: Only 4?! Impossible! Dies the Fire (and sequels) (S. M. Stirling), Atlas Shrugged (Ayn Rand) (I now longer worship at her alter, I now think she was at least partly nuts - but I did in my formative years), Almost Anything Poul Anderson Ever Wrote,...that's the best I can do on short notice.

4 Favorite Vacation Spots: Bozeman, MT (in part, but not entirely, because both my kids are there; Adirondack High Peaks; North of England and South of Scotland (based on 1 week's trip); Pittsford, Vermont.

4 Things that tick me off: Criminal laws against behavior that doesn't really harm anyone, but that someone thinks is "sinful." Government officials who think their function is to control and dominate people rather than to serve them. People who oppose gun ownership, even by properly trained, responsible citizens, without really knowing diddlysquat about guns. People in a song circle who sing and play loudly, without staying on pitch or tempo, especially tempo.

4 Things I'd rather be doing right now: Hiking in the woods. Picking and singing with selected friends, preferably with good beer on hand. Cross-country skiing in good conditions. I won't say the fourth, but use your imagination - I'm old, but not dead.

Peter.

Scoville,

What is it about "Matewan" that draws you? I've watched it at least three times myself, and enjoyed it very much. but I am from WV, and my Mom's family were coal miners. My grandfather died in a mine cave-in. I had grand uncles involved in the coal wars and the work of unionizing the mines. I

I didn't know if it was as good a movie as I thought, or if I just resonated with the history and the location because of my own family history.

I should have listed Matewan too. Whenever I'm asked why I'm a democrat, I suggest they watch Matewan.

Whoohoo! If Scoville, a Texan, and Kendall, a Mainiac, are fans of Matewan, then I'm not just being ethnocentric:^)

when the movie first came out, my husband and I tried to take my grandmother, then in her 80's, to see it. She wouldn't go. Said she didn't want to be reminded of those terrible times.
