Subject: RE: Lyr Req: eyes like crystal, lips like cherry wine From: Joe Offer Date: 28 Jun 07 - 04:23 AM Now, I don't know if I believe these are the authentic, original lyrics, but here you go: CHURCH LADY BLUES She's got eyes like crystal waters, Lips like cherry wine, A body like fine brandy and a soul that's just divine. Oh momma, she treats me so damn fine. When I ask for water, She brings me holy wine, She brings me holy wine, Do, do, do, do. from http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/read.cgi?id=20020721&tid=353131 http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/read.cgi?id=20020721&tid=353131 attributes the song to David Bromberg, which seems more likely to me. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: eyes like crystal, lips like cherry wine From: Jim Dixon Date: 02 Jul 07 - 01:44 AM The first verse that jstarwolf quoted above is indeed from JUGBAND SONG by David Bromberg. (See kat's link above.) There are several blues songs that contain the verse about "coffee ... tea ... jailhouse key" or something very similar. Henry Thomas' song DON'T EASE ME IN, which was covered by The Grateful Dead. There is more information at this Grateful Dead fan site. Leadbelly's song MIDNIGHT SPECIAL contains this verse: "I don' believe that Rosie loves me", well tell me why She ain't been to see me, since las' July She brought me little coffee, she brought me little tea Brought me damn near ever'thing but the jailhouse key. John Lennon's song ANGELA (about Angela Davis?) contains this chorus: They gave you sunshine. They gave you sea. They gave you everything but the jailhouse key. They gave you coffee. They gave you tea. They gave you everything but equality. |
