Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Soldier boy Date: 17 Jul 07 - 09:57 PM Hi Alio, you probably already know but if not, Tim the Twangler has already started his own message on the "Staithes Music weekend" thread on Mudcat. Suprise, suprise! And if it's not good enough to disturb people on this thread he's even managed to do it on his own thread! Too much runing off at the mouth can land you in trouble and hopefully he will realise that now. But I don't want to be negative and sincerely wish both and all folk festivals/gatherings every success. Peace and tranquility. Chris |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Alio Date: 18 Jul 07 - 04:18 AM Hah! We've reached the 100 mark on this thread! I ought to celebrate with a Jamieson's - what do you think? Or another look at the campsite? Ali |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Carol Date: 18 Jul 07 - 04:52 AM God Luck to Saddleworth but I'll be at Staithes |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: LesB Date: 18 Jul 07 - 04:58 AM Have another look at the campsite pls, i'm getting a little nervous hearing all these tales of mud & mossies. I've only been a day case before & not stayed over. What does it get like going too & fro from the campsite to town? Why is it that the cafes close at tea time but the resturants don't open after tea? At least you can get a beer. Chers Les |

Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Vin2 Date: 18 Jul 07 - 08:54 AM Hi guest, there's a singaround in the Con Club with the Saddleworth leg-endary Geoff Miller at 7.30 or the main concert at the Civic also starting at 7.30. See you all for mud, music, song & beer! |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: 8_Pints Date: 18 Jul 07 - 10:10 AM LesB - getting to and from the camp site on foot is easy. There is a footpath that runs along the stream directly into Uppermill (about quarter of a mile). By road you need to go "round the houses" via Greenfield. Bob vG |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Geoff the Duck Date: 18 Jul 07 - 11:09 AM Hopefully the path will still be running alongside the stream as in previous years. Quack! GtD. |

Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Cindy Date: 18 Jul 07 - 02:27 PM Sorry. Found this thread after the out of date one. Is the camp site still ok? |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Alio Date: 18 Jul 07 - 04:43 PM Les and Cindy - the campsite's fine - just damp in parts. Geoff's opened it up today and would have told us if there were any problems. it's easy getting from the campsite into Uppermill - only 200 yards approx.. Friday starts off with a concert, a singaround and a session, all around 7.30. There's usually a singaround in the Waggon on Thursday as well. Thanks for answering all the questions - I was out getting a camp bed!! Glen (Moor and Coast) called me to say they've stocked up with Jamieson's for me! Ali |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Soldier boy Date: 18 Jul 07 - 09:23 PM What! just for you Alio? |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Alio Date: 19 Jul 07 - 04:04 AM Fraid so - my reputation seems to have gone before me!! It's beautiful weather here in Saddleworth! Latest from the campsite - Geoff's just called me and said that it will be fine as long as it's treated with care. He suggests that cars are parked on the running track or the car park. Off to put the venue signs up now! See you all later. Ali |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Pistachio Date: 19 Jul 07 - 08:13 AM 24 hours and we should be on our way. Lets hope the beautiful weather mentioned stays around! Is there a 'one way system' planned if we are to park on the running track? Whatever, see you soon. The roses are ready! H. |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: 8_Pints Date: 19 Jul 07 - 09:40 AM Hi Hazel, No, but I shall park my 3 ton vehicle on the inside lane in a clockwise direction for a quick getaway on Monday! Bob vG |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Alio Date: 19 Jul 07 - 11:03 AM I think you drive round to the left - well I do anyway. There are already around 9 or 10 vehicles camped there, and just one big puddle at the bottom! Ali |

Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: nutty Date: 19 Jul 07 - 02:36 PM As long as I get there in the dry I don't mind what happens after that. I just hate the motorway when its raining. Can't wait to see everyone though. |

Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Alio Date: 20 Jul 07 - 07:48 PM it's been a fantastic first evening - and seeing everyone again has been wonderful! But we have been re-christened Paddleworth!! Ali |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: alanww Date: 21 Jul 07 - 08:05 AM I'm really jealous that you are having a great time Alio! Sorry but Sandy & I just couldn't make it through the rain & floods! Its pretty wet down here in Stratford-upon-Avon and the M50 is still closed, so I still cannot get to Ross-on-Wye to pick up Sandy! I hope there are enough Shellbacks who got through but I guess it wasn't quite so bad travelling for those living in the North. Good luck everyone. Enjoy! "Don't mind the rain ...!" Alan |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Mrs.Duck Date: 22 Jul 07 - 05:17 PM Got back around 7.30. Another great weekend and even though the campsite did have its own pool the rain held off a lot of the time and today was sunny!! The kids have come home with new ocarinas courteousy of Sue (Red and white rabbit)which she also taught them to play! Looking forward to next year! |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Barb'ry Date: 22 Jul 07 - 06:47 PM Another great Saddleworth - thank you so much Ali, for making it happen. We loved the outdoor swimming pool and health giving mud spa you laid on for us at the campsite - you would pay a fortune for that in some places... Great music and company and hope to see you next year Barb'ry |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Soldier boy Date: 22 Jul 07 - 08:18 PM A great weekend was had by all.I never heard any complaints. The campsite was a bit wet at times but nothing that a good pair of stout boots or wellies could'nt cope with. Enjoyed meeting all folkie friends again. Washing machine is now set to super mud-wash mode so all is well! |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Red and White Rabbit Date: 23 Jul 07 - 03:01 AM Thanks Alio and team - really enjoyed being back - thanks to everyone for the invites to other places will try to catch up with you all at some point. Hope the ducklings continue to enjoy ocarina at breakfast for a good few weeks to come - there is a second book Jayne, and a six holed ocarina + plenty of online music so there is a lot more scope for them to drive you mad over the summer! |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Mrs.Duck Date: 23 Jul 07 - 07:23 AM Gee thanks, Sue. My feet have never been so soft with all the mud treatments. |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Goldengob Date: 23 Jul 07 - 07:59 AM Bill W and I had a great time- thanks to all for their hard work - met lots of old friends and hopefully made lots of new ones. Good to sing to audiences who want to sing back at you!! Cheers Dave F |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Lenny's mum (inactive) Date: 23 Jul 07 - 08:08 AM We had a great time, even the caravan had it's own lake out of the window. I was so pleased the sun shone on Sunday. The survivors sings in Greenfield Con Club worked well too. A lot better than the old pub where it was a struggle to get in, yet alone sit down. |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: 8_Pints Date: 23 Jul 07 - 08:24 AM Congratulations Ali - I'm sure you will be a hard act to follow next year! I can't imagine half of the effort and work you must have undertaken to make the event such a success - Many thanks indeed. I agree the move to the Greenfield Conservative Club provided much more room to squeeze all those singers into. This was my personal highlight of the festival. Love Bob & Sue vG |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Mr Happy Date: 23 Jul 07 - 09:35 AM Just got home! Ali, Ditto all thanks & praise for your dedication on our behalves for making it all such a fab experience. Had inadvertant midnight roll in the en suite mudbath on Fri night, still digging congealed soil from me glasses frames - lucky 'twas dark or would've made a spectacle of meself! Could'nt find me tent in the dark & only lights to be seen was the loo block - so ended up spending the night on the floor of mens chaning room - hard - but nice & wqarm & DRY! LUXURY!! Rest've weakend sessions in the pubs great - met lots 'catters- talented lot aren't we! Ray Padgett, Muppet & many others had us all in stitches with their most entertaining renditions, & very memorably Sooz's contributions in Con Club last night. Good place that - big enough for both the massed folkers [did I spell that right?] & also the small but intimate sinaround in the little members bar [no I'd not been peeking!] Even heard the most fascinating version of 'Danny Boy' from one've the locals with the words & tune of 'Old King Cole' [naughty Boys Brigade version]!! Can't weight for next time!! |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: r.padgett Date: 23 Jul 07 - 09:48 AM Met Mr Happy at last! I am home safely and dry ~ kipped in the Van Rather foggy over Saddleworth Moor O Lancashire were awarded the War of The Roses, shield donated by Sid Calderbank I think, first time 2007 Some excellent singing from Scolds Bridle, Stan Accrington (a genius), that nice Dave Molloy and the incomprehensible Scowie and Sid who went on for ever!! Hissyfit get better and better and need bookings, so too Bruce Michael Baillie. Bruce is a talented singer and a funny man, little known outside of Cleckie (how many comedians do we have at the moment ~ not too many new ones) Thanks to Arthur and Copper Kettle too Here's to next year's War! Ray Thanks also to Geoff Miller, Geoff Turner, Mary and Roy Clinging and the Lincolnshire Chappy who judged (name?)~ no hate mail will be sent!! |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Rasener Date: 23 Jul 07 - 09:59 AM >>Hissyfit get better and better and need bookings<< I second that Ray |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: nutty Date: 23 Jul 07 - 10:01 AM Just arrived home to find some of my pots and baskets wilting for lack of water - ironic in't it. What a weekend................ Didn't think Saddleworth could get any better but the 10th certainly stood out as the best yet for me. The Saturday concert in the Museum was superb except that the midges certainly had a good supper - many thanks to whomever invented anti-histamines. bUT BACK TO THE HIGHLIGHTS Hissyfit continue to delight with both material and harmonies (I'm so jealous girls) Scold Bridle, Stanley Accrington, Muldoons Picnic, Jez Lowe, Bryony , Bill and Dave .... in fact everybody - I was not disappointed by one single performer I even heard good reports of the ones that I missed. Thanks to all who came to the Internet Workshops - now they know more about Mudcat they may even log on and read this. Thanks also to all the lovely people I meet at these weekend for providing such pleasure. I'm feeling tired flat and emotional but would like to share this little rhyme with you When my life is done and my spirit's at rest And there's nothing on earth that can save me Don't weep and don't mourn Send me off with a song And reflect on the pleasure that knowing you gave me. |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 23 Jul 07 - 10:57 AM Had a great but damp time. Nice to see everyone and will bump into some and others at Warwick |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Alio Date: 23 Jul 07 - 01:03 PM What can I say to everyone who came to Saddleworth? It was such an emotional weekend - I was in tears most of the time! I wanted it to be a huge singers festival, and it certainly was. The Wilsons told me on Sunday morning that they've never known a concert as easy as the one in the Civic on Saturday night - they only had to sing a couple of words, and every time this wall of sound came back at them! Ray - thank you so much for your lovely words to me at the Survivors Session. And what a wonderful session it was! It took nearly 3 1/2 hours to get through all the singers. The Greenfield locals couldn't believe it! Rolling Home was just amazing, wasn't it? So thank you to you all - artists, stewards, friends, festival goers. You're all just wonderful! I know the festival will carry on from strength to strength with the people who come every year - many of this year's Saddleworth "virgins" have said that they're coming back again. (Yes, we still have them over here!!) I jjust wish I'd seen Mr Happy and Linda (Hissyfit) get stuck in the mud - that would have just made my weekend perfect! Especially the thought of Colin K lifting Linda out!! Hazel - don't foget to send me the photo! I'll see you all soon - maybe in Saltburn and definitely at Fylde. I'm featuring Scolds Bridle on Oldham Community Radio next Monday, and Hissyfit sometime in September, so tune in if you can! Then Linda, Hazel and Sue are coming back here, so please get over! Love, Ali x |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: SiobhanN Date: 23 Jul 07 - 01:13 PM Chris & I had a great time at the festival - it's the first time we've been, and we hope it won't be the last! Thanks, Ali, and to everyone else who made it such a great weekend! |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Pistachio Date: 23 Jul 07 - 03:30 PM Safe home - thanks for the tow Geoff, and the offers from everyone who noticed my motorhome was stuck in the mud! Fortunately it didn't sink further as the weekend progressed. Linda was not so lucky. The rain didn't dampen spirits - it just left a tide mark on everything! Wellies are wonderful... So are disposable gloves! (They save ruining a good manicure when pulling up tent pegs) What a wonderful weekend we had. Thanks Paddleworth! The lovely comments above are very kind. Linda and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We didn't win the war but we enjoyed the battle. Good to hear Bruce's clever monologues, I'll have to wait to hear him sing. It was great to hear Dave F and Bill W at their 'extended' session in the Commercial on Sunday(!!) and the Wilsons were 'new' to me. Wow,how many different harmonies? Thanks Ali, for asking us to sing and for guiding us to Greenfield last night. It was brill. I loved it when Pete (Shellback) sang his Pirate song and cried with laughter at his variation of Gaudete! Impeccable timing. I sang myself hoarse with all the choruses but that's not a complaint. It was an amazing night with a room full of happy voices. It was a great privilege to share a weekend that's so special. I'm tired. I need to rest mind and voice. Great to put 'mudcat' names to faces and catch up with everyone again. H x.x.x Goodnight. |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Linda Kelly Date: 23 Jul 07 - 04:38 PM the best yet-especially the wonderful last night. My woefully inadequate footwear which was rescued by Col K (my hero) from the mudbath, have been consigned to the bin -the trench foot is healing nicely but i think the tent is terminal. Alio, this year was spectacular Wilsons-wow! wonderful sets from Bill W and Dave F and Jez -only sorry I couldn't catch more and the singing in concerts in pub on the campsite -well it was mighty! Will see you soon Ali and thanks to Geoff who was a treasure. We won't mention the War! |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: Alio Date: 23 Jul 07 - 06:22 PM No - don't !! We wuzz robbed!!! Geoff has asked me to post a message here to all those who camped on Churchill, to say a big thank you to you all - thanks for listening to him and the stewards re parking so that everyone could get off pretty easily - and thanks for leaving the whole area so clean and tidy that no one could possibly tell you'd been there!! Amazing! He's really grateful to you all. Ali x |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: GUEST,old git Date: 23 Jul 07 - 06:42 PM I had a great weekend too. Thanks Ali and all the rest..especially my mate Geoff. Thanks to everybody who made the singarounds in the Uppermill Cons club so good... Yes Ray I agree...Hissyfit get better every time I hear them...and they always manage to bring a lump to my throat with Sweet Minerva. Sorry I had to miss the survivors session but had to be elsewhere. here's to the next one! geoff turner |
Subject: RE: 10th Saddleworth From: MoorleyMan Date: 23 Jul 07 - 06:46 PM Wow indeed. What a wonderful - and yes, very emotional - weekend. My only regret was having to leave the Survivors' session early due to a domestic commitment. O Alio, you will be the hardest of acts to follow!..... Cheers! MM |
