Subject: Lyr Req:No other name From: lefthanded guitar Date: 29 Jun 07 - 05:13 PM I am almost ashamed to ask for the words, chords and singer of this old chestnut that, for reasons unknown, has been rolling around in my head lately. I don't remember it as being a particularly good song, but I'd like to know where I heard it from. some of the lines go Know me by the light of the fire burning bright know me if you will by the wind on the hill you'll know me by no other name. I remember hearing this song a lot when I was in high school, but danged if I can get beyond these scraps of lyrics. |

Subject: You'll Know Me By No Other Name From: Genie Date: 30 Jun 07 - 05:19 AM Thanks for the links, Peace. I used to do that song back in the day (though it's a bit melodramatic for my taste now), and it's good to have a handy-dandy lyric-chords sheet. G |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Know me by no other name From: lefthanded guitar Date: 02 Jul 07 - 04:58 PM Thanks to all who sent this. it is much appreciated. (I don't think there's anywhere else on the web would I be able to ask about a decades old song like this and get such a prompt answer - I took a while to find the thread again) I know the song is a bit heavy on sentiment but first heard it in grade school so it still have resonance to me. I bet I actually owned that album myself years ago. |

Subject: ADDPOP: No Other Name (PP&M) From: Joe Offer Date: 03 Jul 07 - 01:44 PM The best place to get Peter, Paul and Mary lyrics is www.peterpaulandmary.com . There are a few mistakes in the lyrics, but very few. It started as a fan site, and then became the official PP&M site. The site has lyrics for all PP&M songs, and chords for a few. It does have a link to an external site with chords for this song - (click).
Noel Paul Stookey- Neworld Media Music Publishers ASCAP Know me by the light of a fire shinin' bright, Some girls will bring you silver Some will bring you gold, babies to hold, Some girls will die for money, I'll die alone, away from my home This song comes from Album 1700 (1967). I like the album, but I think it marks the apex of PP&M's trip away from "folk" music. Not a single song on this album has traditional roots. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: No Other Name (from Peter Paul & Mary) From: Joe Offer Date: 03 Nov 16 - 10:35 PM Hi, Lassie, this song came out on the 1967 PP&M album, Album 1700. I believe this was the first album PP&M recorded with songs that were primarily from modern songwriters. Noel Paul Stookey usually writes songs from his own imagination, not based on other songs or pieces of literature. The meanings of his songs are usually quite cryptic. I don't know if you'll find an explanation of the song - it's not explained in the album notes. -Joe- |

I wish I could tote you around in my phone. :-) It is indeed cryptic but if I'm going to sing it then I like to know the feeling or reason behind it. I guess this one will just be me singing a mystery. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: No Other Name (from Peter Paul & Mary) From: Lanfranc Date: 11 Nov 16 - 07:12 PM Joe, It's not quite true to say that none of the tracks on Album 1700 has traditional roots. Bob Dylan's Dream was inspired by and uses the tune of Martin Carthy's version of Lady Franklin's Lament/Lord Franklin. Alan |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: No Other Name (from Peter Paul & Mary) From: GUEST,Larry the Radio Guy Date: 11 Nov 16 - 09:02 PM I'm always thrilled to hear people talking about Album 1700---which I think may have been one of the most under-rated albums of all time. Especially side 1---some incredible songs, beautiful arrangements. |
