It seems that this is the practise of flirting while outside a pub (or similar) having a smoke.

That's great that there's a word for it, long overdue - is there a word for hanging outside smoking and, since you're in the US, carefully not flirting?
If you're chatting - smatting?
Smossiping?
Smanging out? I kind of like that one, but the above is more true!
(both the above neologism and the higher above post!)

So I suppose fleathing is what you do *inside* the pub when the boring smelly smoker you came with has gone outside?

I certainly wouldn't be caught smirting with anyone who wasn't fully lingible. Participants in the former frequently meet substantial resistance to reciprocation with respect to the latter except within the population of co-participants in the first.

"lingible"?

...boy, that's a thread-closer if I ever heard one.

As there are no bookmarks on the page, search (Ctl-F or Edit|Find) for "lingible" after the page opens.

So does a smap in the face imply a rejection of a smirt?

"I do my smirting in the rain...."

Hey, I feel a parody coming on...

...and here it is. Just broke my record, less than 10 mins!
Based of coyrse on the Everly Brothers hit

I'll never let you see
The way my coughing lungs are hurting me
I got my pride and I know how to hide
Every nicotine stain
I do my smoking in the rain

Slip out in stormy skies
Then smoke and cough till I get tears in my eyes
Where I have been looks like a disaster scene
Just cigarette butts remain
I do my smoking in the rain

I love you more than heaven
But our relationship is never enough
So when we are together
I pray for stormy weather
I hide the packet and go out for a puff.

Someday when my coughing is done
I'll wear a minty smile and walk in the sun.
I may be a fool
but till the end darling you
Never see me complain
I do my smoking in the rain.

I got a good smuckle out of that, George.

Actually, I smortled.

You wrote that so fast, I bet your pen (or keyboard) was smoking!

Did it get wet, or did you have a bumpershoot?

(Okay, okay...I'll leave quietly)

Is it acceptable for non-smokers to smirt?

SINSULL -

At the last place I worked where they had designated smoking areas, I found the "conversation" in the smoke/smirt breaks extremely helpful in keeping tabs on what was going on, especially in some shop areas with which I had little "official" contact.

I convinced one fellow employee who complained about possible carpal problems that breaks are necessary, and he started joining the group regularly, without participating in the smoking. I think there was some benefit for him.

I know he didn't smoke.

I didn't really observe for whether he smirted, but it's not unlikely.

John

Is anyone who helps out those smokers standing at the side of the road anything akin to The Good Smirtan of The Bible?

I'd suppose the term would cover those out picking up fag-ends as well as those out to just pick up on some loose butts.

Surely if a non-smoker goes outside the activity cannot be smirting since no smoking occurs - so is it non-smirting???

Stilly -

The word was "lingible." Same root, I presume.

I posted a link to a web definition somewhere up above: adjective, roughly "meant to be licked."

It may be a little difficult to find on the web although it's out there; but it appears at least twice in different editions of Uncle John's Bathroom Reader which is a source known for its infallible accuracy. I'll concede it's not in my Random House CD dictionary, but I use lots of words that aren't there.

John

Sinsull, are you sure your colleague had carpal problems? It seems to me he was using smirting as a way to solve carnal ones...

I saw your definition. I just didn't go back up the page to see if was an "ible" or "able" when I was typing that last remark. And I presume John Hardly's stoneware is suitable to ling if it is suitable to eat off of.

Hindu Shrine's Icy Stalagmite Melts
July 02, 2007

SRINAGAR, India - A naturally formed stalagmite in a Kashmiri mountain shrine has melted away, officials said Monday, blaming body heat from the hundreds of thousands of Hindu pilgrims who visit each year. For over 200 years, Hindus have worshipped the stalagmite, called a lingam, as an incarnation of the Lord Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction and regeneration. Its size has fluctuated in previous years - ranging from 5 to 12 feet tall - but the it has never before disappeared entirely.

"One of the main reasons for its melting is the conduction of body heat of the huge crowds at the formation," said Shakeel Ahmed, who heads Geology and Geophysics Department at the University of Kashmir.

He also blamed the helicopters that deposit pilgrims near the mountain cave and generators powering light bulbs. "There will be some disappointment for the pilgrims as the main lingam has completely melted," said Arun Kumar, a top official of the Amarnath Shrine Board, which manages the pilgrimage.

Officials say at least 400,000 devotees are expected to make the 10-mile trek from the nearest village to the Amarnath shrine, in a mountain cave 13,500 feet above sea level that is topped with a glacier. Pilgrims leave offerings of flowers, coins and paper money inside the cave.

Chanting hymns and ringing bells, the first group of nearly 12,000 pilgrims on Sunday began the journey amid tight security against Islamic militants. However on Monday, government has again suspended the pilgrimage because of heavy rains en route the cave shrine.

Muslim rebels who have been fighting for decades with India over Kashmir accuse Hindu-majority India of using the pilgrimage as a political statement to bolster its claim over the Himalayan region.
