I think we are going to start planning a lot earlier next year. Lots of pubs have DJs and odd bands on around here. Some of the local churches and schools etc. put on musical events so if we planned well ahead we could have a mini music festival.

We Oxjammed until we dropped. Much excellent music from:

The Ghyll Head Band, Mapdcap Ceilidh Band,
Dave Bishop, John Routledge, Olga Adigu, Sue van Galen and Keith and Sam Hancock.

I think we squeezed around 80 people in. The collection made nearly £260 and Marek, the owner of the Lloyds donated another £40 so we topped £300.

Thanks to everyone who sang, played, read poems and generally had a good time.

Last Tuesday, The Barlow International Folk Dance Group raised £60 with an evening of country dancing from many parts of Europe for Chorlton's 3rd Oxjam,
Cheers

Just a reminder for all you insomniacs that Oxjam Leeds is tomorrow -Sat 13th - at St James Church, Manston, East Leeds (very close to the ring road), starting at 2 pm.

The "folky bit" of the day is scheduled from 7 till 10 pm, with headliners the fabulous DUNCAN McFARLANE ACOUSTIC BAND, preceded by the enigmatic Stanley Accrington, with - earlier in the evening - sets by local folk stars Gerry McNeice, David Kidman, Heather Woodhead and Russ Hughes.
Should be a great evening and deserves yr support.

Ive just signed up again. The Boat Inn reopened at the end of August and the Irish sessions are back. Its so nice to be in my comfort zone again on a thursday night.

Our first event will be on Oct 4th, with a raffle. Jennie the new landlady is keen to join in and I think there will be Irish Stew.

The session is mainly tunes, but from about 10pm the singers get the odd song started.

Good luck with your events

Great you picked that up! I took a few leaflets along as i was singing at the Leeds folk event on the Frday.
I am organising it. Let me know if you want tickets.i've never organised anything like this before!! Most of it is sorted, not sure about sound though. There is a sound system in the church but Anyone know a sound engineer who'd come along with gear for nothing?

Oxjam really is an amazingly simple yet brilliant concept

What is OXJAM?

Oxjam is a music festival with a difference. Across the UK throughout October, people like you will be putting on Oxjam music events to raise money for Oxfam.

I urge anybody who is involved in live music, especially folk music, to either put something on or designate a club night or similar event as an Oxjam and send the procedes to one of the most effective charities.

http://www.oxfam.org.uk/get_involved/fundraise/oxjam/index.php?ito=2415&itc=0

http://www.oxfam.org.uk/get_involved/fundraise/oxjam/index.php?ito=2415&itc=0

Failed the blue clicky test again - can someone help?

Your details will go on the website and you main gain new people. It will also show just how lively the current folk scene is.

Please give it serious thought

Cheers

Les

Once you sign up, there is a website with loads of advice - e.g. how to write press releases, book venues etc etc. Last year they also offered a mentoring service, with people from the music industry volunteering their advice for free, and of course logos and arwtwork to use in your publicity.   I wish I'd found out about all that a bit earlier, will definately go through it in more detail this year.

There is very much an 'every little helps' approach. They ask that you put out oxfam leaflets/ have a stall, but don't insist on it. The only complication I had was making sure we stuck to guidelines for collecting money, which anyone collecting for a charity has to stick to anyway.
