HOT DOGGIES!!

This item from the CBS News web site. After describing what she did on camera, the report goes on to say:
She attracted the world's attention. Brzezinski's gotten over a thousand e-mails, and was named "woman of the week" by a British Web site. She's been invited to address a media symposium in Scotland. The New Zealand Herald hailed her: "Deliberate or not, there is no denying the incident struck a chord with viewers the world over. When it comes to Paris, we've all had enough."

It may be a coincidence, but three days after the incident MSNBC told Brzezinski that she'll have a regular hour to anchor the news each morning.
I guess after the viewer response, MSNBC would have been committing suicide if they fired her.

HOSANNA!! Way to go, girl!!

That item was mentioned on the ABC TV (Aust) 'Media Watch' show about the time I made the original post. I don't know if it is still on their web site...

Sadly, It is for real - and I had enough contacts in the right places to find out what happened, thus I know that it was a bodged 'MS Word to HTML conversion' normal stuffup... :-)

Just sent another one, signed with my name and address.

"I wish to compliment Mika for having the cajones to refuse to do the Paris Hilton intro to the news on the show. It is about time someone in the media stood up and said, "Enough of this shit." I have become a new fan of hers, along with tens of thousands--if not hundreds of thousands--of viewers. Too bad there aren't some people like her in federal politics, south or north of the border."

*****************************************************

I ain't holdin' my breath for an answer. Be interesting to see if we all get the SAME answer. Maybe we should compose it now and be done with the angst.

"Dear _________:

Thank you for your e-mail/letter/telephone call regarding Mika Brzezinski. We value the ideas and thoughts off all our viewers and we will take your message under consideration.

Thank you again for writing to express your opinion about the show.

Sincerely,

The following posted by E-Mail 0800hrs 2nd July.

Dear Sir,

This story is a breath of fresh air for those of us (and there are many) who are sick to death of the sycophantic pandering to spoilt brats because Daddy is well heeled.

You are lucky to have just one journalist on your staff with the sense to correctly prioritise, the courage to act on her convictions, and the integrity to refuse to roll over when threatened by authority.

Disciplinary action would, in my view, be exceedingly ill advised. Better far to have her train the rest of your staff to her high standards.

Long may she cotinue to stand by her principles. I wish we had a few like her in the UK.

Don T.

Scarborough is not a journalist but rather is a failed ex Republican Congressman who waved the flag for War and W.

Mika only refused to read the Hilton story as the lead story.

ON TV they say "if it leads it bleeds", ie a murder story or war story.

The responses of the other jounos in that newsroom are exactly why what Mika did is so necessary. What they are, in effect, saying is, 'We comply and don't make waves and do what we're expected to do and certainly don't question.' And, astoundingly, if you question the way Mika did, you're not even a journalist !! Whoever controls the definitions, controls some of the action.

Does that remind anyone of any state and any period ?

If the responses I've got at work are anything to go by, there's a load of difference between the publics on either side the pond.

One was 'Will she lose her job?'

Another was, 'Is Paris so terrible?'

Lot of quietism in the UK.

And have any of those who've contacted the station had a reply? (But then, did you enclose an sae?)

"What journalism school did he graduate from!??"

Almost any - but the USQ School of Journalism (for the full thing!) :-) mentioned in this thread seems a likely place... :-)

I did a short Journalism Course that allows me entry into the AJA - was disgusted at the sensationalism expected...

Peace and Don Firth - I am proud to be in your company. I have just sent the following message via Peace's link:

I wish to congratulate the superb Mika Brzezinski for refusing to lead a serious news broadcast with a piece of irrelevant trivia. When there are more journalists of her dignity and integrity, the public will once again become informed enough to hold sensible debates on issues which matter.
Yours faithfully,
Alan Moorhouse

I hope a lot more similar messages arrive on that editor's desk.

The "school of the hairdoed news broadcaster". A line I recall from somewhere--or words to the same effect--is, "Edward R Murrow wouldn't have been worried about how his hair looked." That about sums up journalism to me, Don. How it got to be the way it is is beyond anything I can figure out.

From Wikipedia:

Edward R. "Ed" Murrow (April 25, 1908 – April 27, 1965) was an American journalist and famous media figure. He first came to prominence with a series of radio news broadcasts during World War II, which were followed by millions of listeners in the United States and Canada. Mainstream historians consider him among journalism's greatest figures; Murrow hired a top-flight cadre of war correspondents and was noted for honesty and integrity in delivering the news. A pioneer of television news broadcasting, Murrow produced a series of TV news reports that helped lead to the censure of Senator Joseph McCarthy.

From that to the present--makes a guy shudder. I figure one of two things: Mika will be unemployed real soon (for all of ten seconds, IMO) or she'll be given a show of her own. It may be the wedge that breaks the stuff we are subjected to now. One can but hope.

Thanks for the kind words, Peace.

One of the things that really struck me in watching the video was the jelly-fish-like behavior of the other on-camera personnel. Did that guy actually say that because Mika Brzezinski refused to read the story, she is "not a journalist anymore?"

I'd say that he got it bass-ackwards. What journalism school did he graduate from!??

Thanks for calling this to my attention!

I just sent the following e-mail to MSNBC Viewer Services:
It is notable by any thinking person that, within recent years, the "news" has been spending an inordinate amount of time on mindless trivia that used to be the province of the more cheesy gossip columnists. And, God help us, these bits of brain-garbage keep appearing as the lead stories in increasing numbers of newscasts.

Thomas Jefferson said that the future of our democracy depends on an informed electorate.

It's hard to have an informed electorate when the news media puts stories like "the continuing adventures of a brainless twit" as the lead story—presumably regarded by some editor as the most important story of the day because of where he or she put it in the newscast—ahead of reporting on the ins and outs of what's going on in the nation's capitol and the world at large that could possibly effect all of this country's citizens.

Cheers, balloons, great showers of confetti, and heartfelt gratitude to Mika Brzezinski for having the intelligence, the sense of proportion, and the guts to refuse to pollute the airways—and the minds of the viewers—with the tedious antics of Paris Hilton, and for running the script through the shredder!

There is a lady who knows what's important. I nominate Mika Brzezinski for head of MSNBC's news department.

Don Firth

Comment from a fan:

"On Thursday as the world's media was going loopy for Paris Hilton, Mika Brzezinski made news herself by refusing to read out a story about Paris's release from jail. Brzezinski thought the stroy was trivial compared to news that Republican Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana was breaking from President Bush on the Iraq war. Despite her producer repeatedly putting the story as the lead and being patronised by her male colleagues Brzezinski held her own and ended up shredding the offending print outs. Go Mika!"

If anyone stumbles across her e-mail address or a method to send a message of appreciation, please post it or message me if you'd be so kind.

The other evening I felt that Brian Williams of NBC was making a point- with a slight grimace he went from covering a bloody day in Baghdad to the Paris Hilton story.

I think it's time that the networks heard from us.
