Does anyone know of a quasi-quiet, musical type celebration for July 4th that doesn't involve beer, dodging fireworks or military parades in the NYC/NJ area?

Hi Lefty,

Don't know how close this adheres to 'folk', but I am giving a presentation at East Jersey Olde Towne Village in Parsippany NJ on the 4th called "Rays Of Light And Glory". I talk about the seeds of the revolution, music of the time etc using artifacts like newspapers, clothing items, and three 18th century instruments. It has a lot of talking, so if you are looking for a music only even 'tis not it.
I will also bring my Irish wirestrung harp because people got bummed last year because I didn't have it - it has nothing to do with the topic, but hey. Who doesn't love a harp tune...

Or you could mosey down to DC and attend the unbelievable Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Free admission can go a ways towards defraying gas costs.

Last year, we went around to retirement homes and sang jingoistic patriotic songs. The people love it, and sang along with it. Didn't happen this year - the woman in charge got too busy, and we idle donothings didn't think of it...
Maybe next year.
