Here in North Cheshire the weather is appalling, it just doesn't seem to want to stop raining heavily. There are occassional lulls, then the downpours continue. The River Mersey is looking very full, as are the local streams.

Any thoughts on the subject?

Not raining at present, and forecast is for "scattered showers" for the next 3 days, with probably clear weather thru the weekend.

The little river I've been watching, about 45 miles SE of here, retreated to just below flood stage at about 19:00 local (8 PM Mudcat time) last night, after being 17 feet above flood stage for the past 4 or 5 days.

A new front, however, has just crossed the Colorado border into Kansas, and depending on how much moisture is in the gulf circulation by the time it gets here, could result either in scattered showers or another round of 5" per day - in perhaps about a week.

The rain that drove our little crick out into the fields has generally moved eastward, and the Kansas City area got about the same dunking roughly a week after our area. In some cases they had a lot more damage. I haven't checked to see if they're still getting incoming.

Here in New England we've just come off a hideous 4 day stretch of hot, humid weather. I visit the UK in the summer to escape it, but last year it appeared to follow me, alas. That said, I'll be there in a week, and I hope the deluge has abated by then!

Same as in Cheshire I guess. Lots of showers, some very heavy, and then a bit of sunshine.

Not been to look at the river nearby yet. But it will be up - that's for certain.

For those not familiar with the topography hereabouts - Sheffield is a load of hills cut through by 5 river valleys which eventually meet in the town and become the river Don. Two of them meet near me - the Rivelin ad the Loxley.

And as I write - the Met. Office announces it is the wettest June since records began in 1914 - the wettest ever month in Sheffield by the way, and our records began in 1875 approx. and it starts raining again.

Blast.

Same sort of outlook as Folkiedave - as we're less than thirty miles away from Wimbledon that's inevitable, I suppose? And I too might go and have a look at the river later (River Wey in this case) - it usually takes 24 hours for the level to rise, and we've had some interesting floods in the middle of the town occasionally over the last 8 years or so.

sitting feeling guilty...here in the Wash DC area we have had about the nicest Spring and early Summer in years. We have had some rain (ot rained a bit last night)...even briefly heavy...and we have had 'some' hot weather, but only for a few days at a time. It would be hard to design a better mix.

A couple years ago, we hed a rain that flooded my basement...and several years ago, we almost had a real drought.

I suppose soon OUR fortunes will turn bad and some of you who are suffering now will be happy.

No accounting for the weather....

In the California Sierra Foothills, We had a what felt like reasonable amount of rain this year, and the nicest snowfall I've seen since I moved here five years ago. However, the snow melted early and there's no snow pack to fill California's needs.
Two weeks ago, we took Debby McClatchy hiking at our favorite spot above Donner Lake. Usually, the snow is too thick for hiking there until the end of July, so it's our August cooling-off spot. This year, it will be dry and dusty by August.
We haven't seen rain for a month, and won't until late September. It's going to be a tough fire season. Lake Tahoe got it bad last week.

Showery here in east London - yesterday we had a splendid thunderstorm... the sky looked like a paint card for the colour grey and the cloud formations would have had Turner wetting himself in anticipation.

It's been quite pleasant in the mornings, but it has developed the habit of clouding over to rain at about 2-3.00pm. Guess when I'm usually on the train home.

Australia's east coast is awash. We haven't been getting much rain - still officially in drought here in Western Victoria. -- And it's the wet season. It started raining last night. Tanks are overflowing!! Frogs are singing in the wetland - where there was a dusty depression a few weeks ago. Hurray.

It did rain a lot here recently, and the water got so deep that right here in Kansas, 'bout a thousand miles from the nearest ocean, we done got ourselves a tanker oil spill to deal with.

It seems that when the water came up around a fairly major "regional" refinery, the power failed, the pumps stopped, and some oil that was being transferred sorta went t'other way right out into the water.

About 42,000 gallons (estimated) loose in the town. Naturally, it's that black crude stuff that makes a real mess.

Other than "we're examining the situation" the only comment from the oil guys has been "Boy howdy y'all, I bet gasoline prices are gonna go up fer a few months."

Anybody got a few old rags handy? They're gonna hafta do some serious moppin' up.

So we've celebrated by purchasing kayaks.

Useless for loading the animals two-by-two as beyond getting
the cats aboard, we'd be swamped.

It's beautiful here in NW Leicestershire this morning. Blue skies, sunshine and a few fluffy white clouds. It's also already pretty warm. I managed to get two loads of washing dry yesterday morning before it started raining in the afternoon. The forecast for the next few days is much better than we've been having....three days showing no rain at all!

Parts of Worcestershire are bad but our spot is OK as far as flooding goes. Rain every day for the last few weeks, really heavy at times, then the sun comes out. Really odd weather. Hay's took a battering, should really be thinking about getting it done but no chance with this weather. Still there are a lot of people much worse off than we are are - our thoughts are with them.

In Oz for the last month we have had a series of intense low pressure systems moving up the NSW coast and lately through parts of Victoria. There has been a lot of flooding, high winds, and it's been cold. There hasn't been any rain here for the last few days but we are still getting gale force winds - the lazy kind that can't be bothered going around you so they go straight through you.

Although there have been some tragedies associated with the floods, a lot of places have benefited from the rain. We certainly needed it as we have been in drought for the last few years.

The water catchment area for Sydney now has the highest dam levels in three years. 4 weeks ago the dam was 36.9% full - now it is 55.6% - the highest since 2004.

Although the days have been sunny, the icy winds have made them not very pleasant. The winds drop at night and build up again during the day. Roll on spring!

I am in Cologne. Of course it is still raining. We had an exceptional summer last year - the like of which is inevitably followed by a very wet one. That happened in 1977 after the heatwave of 1976. It happened in 2004 after the heatwave of 2005. Maybe next year, maybe 2009...

Our local newspaper has reports on a school whose 100 year old hall has been so badly damamged by flood that it is not repairable and they need a new hall.

Calke Abbey, a local big house open to the public had to close for a while due to flood damage. The library has been the worst hit, though they have had to remove all the carpets for drying, the wallpaper is tide-marked and assessors are going through looking at paintings and furniture. This is all really bad since Calke Abbey is unique. The last owner, last in the Harpur-Crewe family who had owned it for generations, was eccentric bordering on mad. When he died and the place was taken over by the National Trust it was found that he had lived in a couple of rooms and the rest of the house had not been touched for over 60 years. A lot of it was still decorated and furnished as it had been in the 19th century. The nursery was still complete and in one room they found a four-poster bed, still boxed for delivery and never used.

A local pick-your-own farm reckons they've lost 80% of their strawberries and as well as the Royal Show closing a day early, a local show has had to be cancelled for the first time in it's 65 years.

Persisted down last night but this morning in Whitley Bay was warm and bright with a lovely breeze coming in over the sea. Started to cloud over now and more rain is expected later.

In June last year we holidayed just down the coast in Whitby and had the most glorious weather you could imagine all week. Last years Abram dance (end of June) was the same. This years was completed mainly undewater. Odd thing is that the Abram day of dance is generaly rained upon when we have visitors from Minnesota. Well, it has happened twice up to now so, just stay away yer buggers!

Here in north Texas we've already exceeded our average yearly rainfall. One of the local lakes is 28 feet above normal. Large trees have fallen because the ground is too soft to hold the roots because it's so wet.

We have had a break in the rain, and in another couple of days I may be able to get a lawnmower into the foot-tall that's sprouted while it's been too wet to mow.

As a side note to the recent flooding, our FFT (favorite family trucker) just returned from a month on the road with negative net, again, due to shitty dispatching and lots of sitting around, so has decided to change companies. (A routine industry procedure.)

He was to start with the new ones on Monday but received an "urgent" demand from them that he take a "FEMA Load" to eastern OK/KS - destination unknown, early Saturday morning.

It's a load of ICE.

(He'll still, apparently, leave, probably for Canada, on Monday morning(?).

Rationale for the FEMA shipment: There are virtually NO AVAILABLE tankers that can haul potable water in the quantities needed, but almost any truck can carry ice. It's guaranteed to melt when it gets there.

Bagged ice is disappearing rapidly from our area, where we're otherwise relatively unaffected by the flooding, and the price of what's left may be up by about 30% according to informal observations.

Rain is still in the forecasts for much of the area over the next week or so, but unlikely to contribute much to the flooding except in a few cases where reservoirs are close to overflow now. Releases from a couple of reservoirs, to make room for incoming rainfall/runoff, may keep "high water" up in a few places, but dangerous conditions are unlikely --- with a little luck.

A short article I found by accident while looking for something else:

Torrential rains over a 5 day period lead to record flows on southeast Kansas rivers.

Record flooding occurred on the Fall River at Fredonia, Verdigris River at Independence and Coffeyville and on the Neosho River at Erie.

The new record crest on the Fall River at Fredonia literally blew the old record out of the water. On June 30th at 11 AM, the river crested at 41.12 ft with a corresponding flow near 91,465 cfs. This flow is almost double the flow of 49,000 cfs that corresponed to the previous crest of 36.17 ft on 4/16/1945.

At Independece on the Verdigris river, the new record crest of 52.40 ft occurred on July 1st at 8 AM. This is nearly 22 ft above flood stage! As the flood stage here is 30 ft. The previous record of 47.60 ft was on 5/19/1943. With this much volume of water, the river has remained above flood stage for almost a week. The river is forecasted to fall below flood stage on Saturday morning of the 7th of July.

Downstream from Independence, Coffeyville also broke their previous crest record of 26.75 ft set on 5/7/1961. The new record crest of 30.7 ft occurred on the evening of July 1st at 6 PM. The river is expected to fall below flood stage the afternoon of the July 7th.

On the Neosho River at Erie, the highest crest that could be obtained from our river observer was 40.60 ft on July 2nd at 7 AM. For a time, the gage could not safetly be reached as the roads were inundated to reach the staff gages. The old record of 36.96 ft was on 11/05/1998.

Second hand rumors from the guy who got it first hand from Kansas DOT people manning the roadblocks in the flood area:

Emergency workers are being pulled out of several flood areas due to "intestinal upsets" (probably from coliform bacteria in the residual flood waters? - i.e it's full of Sh*t). KS Department of Health reports a shortage of Tetanus vacine needed before allowing people to return to assess damage, although adequate supplies should be available soon. Estimates running to >3,500 homes destroyed in a 3-state area. The Coffeyville KS oil spill continues to drift downstream, although much of it seems to have been filtered out on vegetation.

Locals report "the fishin' is good if you can find the right spot."

Here in Missouri we have thunderstorms and brisk winds, side effects of Hurricane Cristobal. It was fun to go outside just now and feel the clean, strong wind.
