Got the sad news via Barry Evans.

Jim was always a one-off but in the best possible way.

He was a great help and constant supporter over many years.

Whitby was never going to be the same as we all acknowledge and that is confirmed by Jim's passing.

Thoughts are with family and close friends.

We are all sorry to hear this news.
I have known Jim for longer than I would care to admit. Jane and Maddie have known him for the past 10 years.
He has been a key figure in many stories which have kept a lot of people entertained over the years.
He will be missed.
Quack!
Geoff, Jane and Maddie.

Jim was always the life and soul of wherever he was.
I have only ever known Scratch with him around, whether dancing or not.

One of my fondest memories is of being taken back to his house after very, VERY cold day of dance in Durham, hosted by Kern as a fundraiser for Children in Need, when every possible tray and magazine was drummed into service for counting the cash, and us and all the kids were roped in to do it. He was great at getting people up and doing things. (He'd asked us back for a cup of tea and a warm!)

My thoughts go out to his family.

Andrea

Have just heard there is to be a "big do" for Jim, in Durham, and as many people in kit as can come are welcome. No date yet - twas going to be this Sat. but it's Durham big meeting day so it's not possible.

Details will be posted on various Morris boards / lists and if I hear any more details, I'll post them here too.

The Whitby Scratch will have to learn to inflate their own sticks now.

Jim will be missed by all.

Quite apart from being the life and soul of the Scratch Morris at Whitby FF, Jim had been around a bit and was a member of the Shakespeare Morris Men for a number of years in the 1970s & early 1980s.
I'll do my best to come to your "big do" and I'll miss you Jim!
"... only remembered for what we have done!"

COPIED FROM AN E-MAIL FROM EILEEN

We would like to invite you to celebrate the life of Jim McCaffery on Friday the 13th of July 2007.

Jim passed away on the 7th of July peacefully in hospital after a lifelong battle with diabetes. Friday the 13 th of July sees our opportunity to celebrate his achievements and our memories of our time with him.

The funeral will take place in three stages - requiem mass, cremation and wake - at three separate locations. The times and addresses of these locations are listed below. You are very welcome to attend any or all of these celebrations of his life.

Please note that we would prefer that you do not send flowers or floral tributes. If you would like to give something in memory of Jim then a donation on the day would be most appreciated. This donation will be used to purchase a memorial seat in Whitby, a town Jim loved to dance in, for anyone else like Jim who found themselves needing rest. Should donations exceed the amount required for the seat then the excess will be split between Diabetes UK and the Freeman Trust.

Requiem Mass

Guests of all denominations will be very welcome at the mass.
Time : 14:30
Location : St. Cuthbert's Church, Old Elvet, Durham, DH1 3HL
Dress : Black is not required, clothes of own choosing or dance kit

Cremation

I sent a message to Jim's family asking if it was alright to post details of Jim's memorial web site here. This is taken from their reply :-
We'd really appreciate you letting people know. We know how much Jim enjoyed Whitby over the years and how important the people and the place were to him. Please feel free to forward the link on to others.

Here is a BLICKY to the memorial web pages. Funeral details are contained there.
Remembering Jim

Quack!

Well I'm safely home.
Jim's coffin was a very stylish wickerwork affair, adorned with corn dollies. Full Catholic church service, well attended. Rain bouncing at the crematorium.
Coffin carried into the church to the tune of Monck's March and Winster processional at the crematorium.
Very nice buffet at the wake followed by some dance and song.
A lot of good memories of Jim.
Quack!
Geoff.

Jim was my brother-in-law. He was a great guy witha huge personality - as anyone who ever met him will know. He never complained, he worked hard and he played even harder! No one will ever forget the beard, the milk bottle or the jokes he told. We miss you Jim. God Bless. Maureen.x
