I thought I'd post this as a teaser and see if anyone remembers my old mentors of folk music but there will, indeed, be a fine benefit concert of Sea Music held at the Maine Maritime Museum, Bath, Maine, on Saturday, July 28th, 7 pm. The proceeds will go to a newly established endowment fund which will promote the kind of folk music that Bill and Gene were known to love and play. I and Alison Freeman front-loaded this endowment fund and the Museum has been extremely happy to cooperate.

Featured performers include Bob Webb, Castlebay, Roll & Go, and Alison Freeman. If you haven't visited this shipyard museum, come early and prowl around. It's well worth a look.

The contact phone number for reservations is 207-443-1316.

Please feel free to post any memories you might have about Bill and Gene on this thread.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Kendall is subtly referring to the Museum's lobsterman display, where the voice of some famous folksinger invits the "marks" in for a little educational chat. I wonder if they now have talkin' lobstah's added to the display?

I am confused Charley. Bill Bonyun sang all kinds of folk music. Will this be only sea music?

Sinsull-

Well, folk music can be confusing. You are correct that Bill and Gene sang all kinds of folk songs. "We" were especially inspired by their songs of the sea and they produced two recordings of those songs, one titled "Roll & Go" and the other "Songs of Yankee Whaling" under their own Heirloom label.

I would expect this concert to be primarily songs of the sea.

There were over 50 people in attendance at this benefit concert, in addtion to the performers! And most were more than willing to sing on choruses and refrains. What a nice evening. Two of Bill and Gene's sons were there, Archie and Paul, and they were delighted with the program. My mother was also there, at the age of 89, singing along.

There were interesting media snafus, the newspaper calendar typo that identified the Maine Maritime Museum as the "Maine Maritime Acadamy," two hours "down" the coast at Castine; we were able to correct that one but we hope no one drove to Castine that evening for our concert. But the one we really loved was the headline that read "SONGS OF THE SEA CONCERT: Shanties and Ballet." Can you imagine Alison Freeman, Castlebay, Roll & Go, and Bob Webb prancing 'crost the stage in our tutus while singing "Randy-Dandy-O"?

Anyway, we all had a very good time and would encourage our friends to the South to consider attending our next special event at the Museum.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
