Subject: Oh The Bell Cow (again)
From: GUEST,The Vermont woods

I've lost the lyrics to "Oh The Bell Cow", and I must apologize because one of you cats sent them to me a couple of months ago. We performed the song but misplaced the lyrics sheet somewhere and now we can't remember some of the verses. Tom Paley did the song with the New Lost City Ramblers back in my earlier youth. Would someone please send me the words again?   Thank you very much. Andy Leader

Subject: Lyr Add: THE BELL COW (from the Dixie Crackers)

Here are two versions:

THE BELL COW from Ethel Richardson's American Mountain Songs

Partridge in the pea patch, pickin' up the peas,
Along comes the bell cow kickin' up her heels!

Oh, the bell cow catch her by the tail,
Call the little gal to milk her in the pail!

THE BELL COW sung by the Dixie Crackers:

(Fiddle Intro)

Went down the cornfield to pick a mess of beans
Along came the bell cow takin' after me.

Oh the bell cow never got a pail
Oh the bell cow never got a pail. (O-hoo)

One of these days when I learn how,
I'm gonna milk the darned old cow.

Oh the bell cow never got a pail
Oh the bell cow never got a pail.

(Fiddle Fill)

The milk tastes good 'til the butter ain't fat
Darned old cow ain't my best pat

Oh the bell cow never got a pail
Oh the bell cow never got a pail.

(Fiddle Fill) (Oh Jersey)

One of these days when I learn how,
I'm gonna milk the darned old cow.

Oh the bell cow never got a pail
Oh the bell cow never got a pail.

(Fiddle Fill)

The old bell cow never knew how to court
Sold the milk and I got me a horse.

Oh the bell cow never got a pail
Oh the bell cow never got a pail.

(Fiddle Fill)

The old bell cow she had a couple horns
Ain't been milked since I been born.

Oh the bell cow never got a pail
Oh the bell cow never got a pail.

Way down yonder in Arkansas
The bell cow hoofed her mammy and pa.

(Fiddle Fill)

Some of these days when I learn how,
I'm gonna milk the darned old cow.

Oh the bell cow never got a pail
Oh the bell cow never got a pail.

(Fiddle Outro)
