Subject: RE: Getaway 07- general discussion/kibitzing From: SINSULL Date: 31 Jul 07 - 01:40 PM In the strange but true category: Last night I dreamt about the upcoming Getaway. The ONLY food served was chocolate. The walls in the room were made of chocolate. And Alaska Mike was removing entire panels of the stuff for his lunch. Most people were complaining about the food. |

I will be there, God willing, and this time I will wear my kilt. I may be one of the few people who didn't have a big problem with Ramblewood, but I have to admit it couldn't have been fun trying to play a stringed instrument on some of those nights. The quiet cabin/music cabin problem was unfortunate but nothing more than a communications glitch. I don't expect it will happen again this year, as long as the registration folks don't put late night singers in the same cabin as people who want to sleep. I'm sorry that Alaska Mike and Leadfingers won't be here this year. I was really looking forward to singing with them. It probably won't happen next year either, since I will likely be out of the country. Edmund Edmund |

However, if the 75/25 pans out I'll be bringin' a small battery operated practice amp because I have two new instruments which really can't be heard without it, one being a cigarbox geetar and the other, a surprise... Subject: RE: Getaway 07- general discussion/kibitzing From: Dan Schatz Date: 01 Aug 07 - 12:34 PM With apologies to Joe Glazer (and everybody else).... I dreamed that I had died And gone to my reward A weekend at Heaven's Getaway On a chocolate boulevard. Chorus: The camp was made of chocolate The strings were toffee I'm told And nobody ever grew tired And nobody ever grew cold. This camp was built in a candy store - No meat or veggies were found The air was so sweet and so fragrant With truffles and treats all around. It was peaceful in the quiet cabin There were no fiddles or horns You didn't hear beautiful music Until you arose in the morn. There was no indigestion in heaven - We ate chocolate all of the time We always had sweets for the children And the whole weekend cost just a dime. When I woke from this dream about heaven I wondered if some day there'd be A Getaway at a chocolate camp For folkies like you and like me. |

Subject: RE: Getaway 07- general discussion/kibitzing From: artbrooks Date: 12 Aug 07 - 03:04 PM We can't come this year...it costs more to fly to the DC area from New Mexico than it does from England and we don't have the driving time this year...but we are planning for 2008. Some thoughts from last year (our FIRST year)- the building thermostats (if you can find them) seem to control absolutely nothing, but the baseboard heaters do have (very small) control knobs on them, which work fine. Katlaughing, if you go, take some salsa - these effete Easterners have no idea how to deal with bland food. Problems with snoring? Jenn and I had a four-person room to ourselves (not sure how that happened), so hers didn't bother anyone and I don't, of course. Maybe there could be a notice board, where evening jams could be announced. Have the hosts come around to appreciating the fact that folkies are nice people with the occasional odd habit, or are they still imposing Prohibition? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 07- general discussion/kibitzing From: Severn Date: 12 Aug 07 - 03:38 PM Kendall, So it's a Cellar's market rather than a trader's? Did that make you a trader TO or OF your own kind? Or both? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 07- general discussion/kibitzing From: Bill D Date: 12 Aug 07 - 07:49 PM "...are they still imposing Prohibition?" alas, it's a **Methodist** camp, and we had to sacrifice open display of alcohol for flat walks and warm beds. I 'think' it was wise... There will be, again, instructions for caution and disposal for those who forget that the camp frowns on such things. Once again, those 5 years at Ramblewood were the only times in 40 years that we have had truly unconstrained freedom to all beverages. I know the Europeans shake their heads, but 'open' camps are rare & expensive here. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 07- general discussion/kibitzing From: katlaughing Date: 12 Aug 07 - 10:13 PM artbrooks, thanks, but I don't "do" salsa, either...born and raised by blandish kinda eaters, I guess!:-) I haven't checked flights, yet, nor called the B&B. We're spending some to get our house in order and paying off most of the bills. If I have to make a choice between CT to see our dau. and grandsons or the Getaway, I will have to choose the former and make the latter the following year, now that our heads are above water for the first time in forever, it seems.:-) |

Subject: RE: Getaway 07- general discussion/kibitzing From: SINSULL Date: 13 Aug 07 - 09:50 PM Miss Kitty, where are you? Colorado? Montana? Nebraska? One of those cold landlocked states. I thought Wyoming from your book which by the way sits on my desk for reference in bad moments. Just advised a young friend about "No" and silence. SINS |
Subject: RE: Getaway 07- general discussion/kibitzing From: katlaughing Date: 13 Aug 07 - 10:51 PM Ah, Sins, thanks for that. My puir book...I've done nothing with it for a couple of years! Colorado, now. I was in WY when I wrote it. OH, and we are in the Banana Belt of CO, so it's never THAT cold, though landlocked it is.:-) Now, back to the Getaway... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 07- general discussion/kibitzing From: Genie Date: 13 Aug 07 - 11:21 PM Well, if the Getaway were in the Pac NW, I might have a better chance of making it this year, if only because of the shorter travel time. I'm still going to see if I can book a flight back east for the Getaway using my FF miles (since the reservation could be cancelled without penalty). But it's looking more and more like I will need to fly south instead of east at that time because of the needs of my 90-something y. o. parents. If that happens, I will try my best to make it to the 2008 Getaway. But I haven't given up hope of making it this year yet. Genie |
Subject: RE: Getaway 07- general discussion/kibitzing From: Janie Date: 14 Aug 07 - 10:55 PM Wellll....for the Getaway to happen in the Pacific Northwest, Washington DC would have to move to Washington State. And I doubt if Washington State would be very excited at the prospect. There are a number of Catter's who are also members of FSGW, but the rest of us "Catter's are there by the gracious invitation of our hosts, the Folksong (lore?) Society of Greater Washington. So save up your pennies (or your points), and figure out a way to come one year, Genie. (And I hope it is sooner rather than later!) Janie |
Subject: RE: Getaway 07- general discussion/kibitzing From: Bill D Date: 14 Aug 07 - 11:23 PM ...but the Getaway concept is not patented, as others have shown. Rainy Camp etc. in the NW and various gatherings in Europe are mini versions. It does take some bureaucracy and planning to deal with people for a weekend, which is easier if an 'already existing' organization serves as a way to reserve camps, get insurance...etc. But no reason that people who can't easily get HERE shouldn't create their own local event. ...and we have 40 years worth of experience and advice we might share. It has been quite an infusion of ideas and talent that Mudcat has brought to FSGW, and frankly, as 'folk' has suffered a numerical decline, Mudcat has helped to keep 'THE' Getaway at critical mass. ...It ain't necessary to have 5-6 workshops running everyday, but it is nice to have that variety of choices....although some may consider it frustrating! *wry smile* As SINSULL has shown, it is possible to have good meetings and good music even with a smaller group....be creative! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 07- general discussion/kibitzing From: Genie Date: 15 Aug 07 - 02:15 AM Janie, my problem with coming this year -- if I have one -- isn't the lack of pennies or points, it's just a conflict with more pressing family needs. But after talking with my sister in San Diego yesterday, I'm thinking I will probably be able to come after all. I just don't know for sure yet. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 07- general discussion/kibitzing From: Joe Offer Date: 15 Aug 07 - 06:05 AM San Francisco's Camp Harmony is very similar to the Getaway - and we still have Debby McClatchy cooking. It's from Dec 27 to January 1 this year. There's always a good number of Mudcatters there. For more information on Camp Harmony, check the Website of the San Francisco Folk Music Club, http://sffmc.org/. I thought there were a number of two-person rooms down the hall in the main lodge building. I'd think that those could be made available to people with special needs, and that they would be almost as good as a motel - except for the lack of private bathrooms. Ernie and Amos and I ate at the Pirate's Cove restaurant, just across the water from the camp, and it was very good. That's the one that has five bed-and-breakfast rooms, and I would think they'd be every bit as nice as the restaurant. See y'all in November. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Getaway 07- general discussion/kibitzing From: Bill D Date: 15 Aug 07 - 11:45 AM ??I don't remember any two person rooms, Joe. There were perhaps a couple which worked that way, as we tried to assign folks 'reasonably', but as far as I saw, all except the one big one at one end had two bunk beds. This is the major factor which prevents us from having the full 200 person capacity. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 07- general discussion/kibitzing From: MMario Date: 15 Aug 07 - 11:48 AM some had two singles and a bunk bed, didn't they? Or am I imagining things? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 07- general discussion/kibitzing From: Bill D Date: 15 Aug 07 - 12:19 PM yeah...several in the main lodge did have that arrangement. It helps, but the cabins are all bunks, I think. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 07- general discussion/kibitzing From: MMario Date: 15 Aug 07 - 12:28 PM but three "lowers" in a room does help...*grin* |
Subject: RE: Getaway 07- general discussion/kibitzing From: Genie Date: 16 Aug 07 - 02:21 PM Oops! Leo, at first glance I read your post as saying "three 'lovers' in a room does help." Naturally, I began to wonder just what sort of gathering you thought this was. *G* (Oh, the perils of being somewhat dyslexic!) Anyway, for the record, I don't mind upper bunks. In fact, sometimes I find the air up there less musty, which makes sleeping easier.) Joe, thanks for the reminder about the California gathering, I just wish it were at a different time, since there always seem to be a lot of loose ends for me to tie up at year's end, making it kind of important not to be out of town. But I do understand why that time would be a draw for some folks. I hope you'll post some reminder threads about that gathering soon, too. Maybe some of our east-coast and midwestern 'catters will head out west for that one, where it's likely to be, well, not exactly warm, but probably above freezing, in Dec. and Jan. Genie |
