Wakana gave me the book at breakfast. By 8:30 I was settled and reading. I read the whole thing. Nice thing about ADHD is the ability to hyperfocus on things that I find interesting. It has been many years since I gave up a whole day to reading. Very nice birthday. And very good book.

Warning for anyone who likes the Playstation 2 games - the latest one is very, very bad for the thumbs as almost all control is by the two knobby things...

It's not quite so much fun as the others, the format is different but the graphics are more like the movie. When you compare it to the first HP games, this one is not so colourful, has no beans (Look Ron, beans!) and is a lot harder to pull oneself out of. You play exclusively as Harry, with lots of tasks to do, but it gets tedious continously running up and down the grounds and listening to the soundtrack of other students bitching about Harry. There are lots of hidden prizes (shown as bright blue/white lights) but so far, we can't do anything with them - there's no Fred and George to buy stuff from yet. The tasks are all of the 'we need potions ingredients' and assembling members for D.A. meetings, helping out other students and finding secret passages - no surprises for those who've played the previous games.

Our copy may be back in the 'pre-owned' bin shortly... we could get 2 other games for the price of that one (and there again, it's worth shopping around - we found at least a £5 difference between stores. Supermarkets are the best bet, but Tesco's seemed permanently sold out), that could prove far more entertaining and less likely to cause RSI.

By the way - We saw the new movie the other night on an IMAX screen. We didn't know that the whole battle sceen at the end had been filmed in 3D !! Spectacular effects - believe me. Really stunning.

Well, I went out and bought mine at 3pm this afternoon - suffering from a cold, and couldn't force myself to go out any earlier. Friend of mine went to Covent Garden Waterstones last night (and was unimpressed with their lack of attention to customer service - just two tills in operation!!) and finished her book this afternoon. Another friend bought hers in Tesco's in Saffron Walden at midnight, and was up to page 300 by 2.30 pm. Haven't started mine yet... later during the week, probably. It's waited all this time, but can wait just a little bit longer!!

Just seen the film.

I really enjoyed the acting as well as the special effects - from the teenage Hogwarts pupils who've been in all the films so far, as well as the galaxy of RADA trained, ex Footlights, ex RSC British stalwarts. It reminded me of some of the combinations I'd seen before, (like Robbie Coltrane and Emma Thompson in Tutti Frutti, Emma Thompson and Imelda Staunton in Peter's Friends). I especially liked the complexity of the Prof Snape role - I remember Alan Rickman's obsequiously oily performance as Obadiah Slope in the Barchester Chronicles, before he became the baddie in Die Hard and Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood, Prince of thieves.

Hurray for all the Weasleys - well, the 6 who were in this one. Wonderful pyrotechnics and pustules from the twins.

Very enjoyable OTT performance from Helena Bonham-Carter as Bellatrix.

Somewhat unnerving to see Vera Drake as Umbridge.

Here in Guam it is already July 21 and the bookstore opens in 52 minutes. Unfortunately it is also Liberation day and getting from here to there is almost impossible as the parade route covers most of the one road that goes that way. Just think, I could be the first person in the USA to buy the new book. My kids would hate me for getting it before they do. hmmm. I may have to go for a drive...

P.S. Some jerk has been posting spoilers on several different pages (comments to the Leaky Cauldron site and Youtube videos involving HP). Both times I accidentally read the first sentence before I realized what it was, then closed my browser as fast as I could hit the button. What a jerk. :PPP At least Leaky has a strict anti-spoiler policy and is deleting them as fast as they find 'em. I also heard something about the NYT posting an early review of the book and revealing some plot aspects (though no ending spoilers) that have JKR and Bloomsbury in a lather. I know, it's all a bit overblown, really, but still. Bleah.

I'll have to force myself not to take my book on my lunch break tomorrow. I could see my co-workers calling me on my cell phone and saying, "Er, Molly...you've been gone for three hours, the rest of us would like to have lunch at some point too."

We've solved the issue over just buying one book by reading it aloud. It's tremendous fun, especially when you have someone who has perfected the different voices (not me!) to really bring it all to life. And it's lovely evenings NOT spent in front of the TV.

Molly and others- thanks for that info re the centaurs... blushes in shame! I've read all the books, but haven't been back to them, and have obviously forgotten quite a bit of the detail. I definitely won't have time to re-read The Half-Blood Prince before Saturday. No way am I going to be queueing up at midnight or going to a party ... I'd rather buy the book first thing Saturday morning (adult cover - not because I'm offended by reading the junior cover version - I just think they're nicer covers). As far as I can see there aren't any shops in town that -aren't- selling it for half price (nobody would be foolish enough to pay more than that surely?)... except for the so-called special edition ones, which they're charging the earth for, and, according to something which I read seem to be nothing more than the ordinary book with a couple of extras thrown in (which were provided free of charge to the retailers by the publishers).

That looks brilliant, MMario- Sandwich is really entering into the spirit of Harry Potter.

The organisers are obviously great fans as they've taken in all sorts of details from the books. I love the idea of free Butterbeer and riding the KnightBus- and Sandwich middle school students will put on a Quidditch game!

My daughter and I would be there if it wasn't so far away :0)

The town is "Sandwich" - Titcomb's bookstore is about a mile west of The Earl of Sandwich on Route 6A.

Funny - one of the Titcomb boys (Andrew, the youngest- I once changed his diaper) was crew chief for the special effects on the Quidditch match for the first movie.

EVery bookshop in the known world is having a Harry Potter party. I'm sick to death of them but I'll still be waiting avidly for the book to arrive. If Manitas remembered to do it, we've gone crazy and ordered a hardback copy - usually I borrow someone else's copy and wait to buy the paperback. There will be intermittent arguments this weekend caused by Limpit and I arguing over who reads it first.

Amazon have been offering it for half price and I know a number of book chain stores have also dropped the price.... it would be interesting to know if the price reflects the cost of production.

I used to be taught by the chap who Rowling based the character of Snape on. So I find it all very interesting. I went to the same school as JK Rowling (secondary and primary) so it's all rather interesting.

I once met Alan Rickman at a Theatre opening I'd helped design the leaflets and booklets for. He was very very charismatic. And handsome. mmmmmmm!

I'm looking forward to watching this new one. The small town bookshop near me are having a Harry Potter party evening tee hee.

We went to one of the early-evening showings "to avoid the queues". Not that there were any at our local multiplex - there were screenings every half-hour.

So what we got was a half-empty cinema full of young kids who got bored really quickly dashing up and down the aisles and in and out of the doors. They weren't impressed by lots of dialogue and no Quidditch, I assume. As this was going on during some of the key scenes a lot of the effect was lost on me. Bah! Humbug! They shouldn't allow kids into these children's movies!

But I agree about Imelda Staunton, about Fred and George, about Sirius, and the three protagonists. I was just slightly irritated about details that were thrown in as a nod to longer plots in the book, but then not developed. Why was Kreacher there at all? Some of it felt like scenes from the book just strung together for the sake of it.

Oh yes - great bit that... but my friend and I ended up in an argument/discussion about whether or not she met a bad end when taken away by the centaurs... my friend's argument was that she appeared in the paper ... ergo she must have been all right.... I'm not convinced (and anyway she didn't deserve it!)

As to being within my rights re Ms Chatterbox ... yes, I know, but the effort of getting up and going back to tell her what I thought of her would have been great and every time I was on the point of doing so she shut up .. additionally she was accompanying a girl in a wheelchair (OK I know that shouldn't make a difference, but it did). I'm just amazed that the people sitting in front of her didn't say a blind word ... I'd have been leaping up and down by that point.

I thought it was great but I agree that some of the scenes seemed rushed. I hope they'll add some to it for the DVD version, maybe a director's cut.

Just got back from watching it. My enjoyment would have been enhanced had the wretched woman two rows back desisted from answering her mobile phone at the start, and then continuing to natter on and off for the whole of the film.... part of me wanted to get up and tell her what I thought and ask her to desist, but I knew I would then spend the rest of the film with a feeling of awkwardness and simmering rage... so I was narked instead!!

That said, I enjoyed the film a lot - the end was particularly good, and yes, I loved the kitties... and could see how wonderful Imelda Staunton's performance was. Wouldn't mind seeing it again after the school hols are over!!!

Had 'Bugsy' been played by adults, there would be no problem. It's because it's children that some see the role of Tallulah as child prostitution, even though there are far worse things out there (has anyone else seen the trailers for 'Johnny and the Sprites' and feel deeply DEEPLY troubled about a single man, living in the woods, inviting children to his house to play with his sprites?). It's also because Jodie Foster and the child in the production I saw are such damned good actresses and play the role so convincingly.

Oh Ruth.... go look at any secondary school and tell me which are the 12yr olds and which are the 16yr olds... it's getting very VERY hard to tell the difference these days.

Only this week I witnessed a deeply disturbing performance by a 10yr old - OK, so it was in a school production of Bugsy Malone and she played Tallulah, but she vamped better than some streetwalkers I know!

Daniel Radcliffe wasn't exactly skinny and weak when he WAS 14...

Ah yes - Daniel Radcliffe is, indeed, "maturing" in more ways than just his acting talent. But when he said at one point, "I'm fourteen!" I almost laughed out loud. He looks considerably older. I can't begin to imagine what he or the others are going to look like by the time they film Deathly Hallows. It'll be like John Travolta and Olivia Newton John playing high school kids in Grease.

I was wondering whether his chiselled form had anything to do with preparing for his nekkid role in the production of Equus that he starred in earlier this year.

I liked the film. It started off rather slow, and I was actually starting to nod off, but it quickly picked up. Great effects, good story and the acting has improved. Best one so far.

Yep - very good indeed. I din't think Imelda Staunton deseved all that credit personaly but I guess it is just because the character she played and what I had in mind from the book were different. I'll bow to everyone elses judgement though and just agree to disagree:-)

It was fab. The best film so far, methinks. Daniel Radcliffe is maturing as an actor, and i think his character in the film felt more three-dimensional and sympathetic than the stroppy little sod that irritated the hell out of me in the book.

Luna Lovegood was especially good, and I also liked Gary Oldman a lot more in this film. Celia Imrie was perfect as Umbridge - again, a lot more believable than the character was in the book. Not sure about Helena B-C - thought she was a bit too mental, and not sinister enough. Lucius - ding dong. As usual.

The effects were brilliant.

Has anyone else noticed that they are all overly fond of knitwear? I mean, I know it's Scotland, but c'mon - even wizards have their street cred to think of.

Actually... I'd argue against the cinema viewing if you're prone to motion sickness. There are some amazing effects that might be lost on the small screen, sure.. but there are also some dizzying camera swoops that leave the cinema goer with a distinct feeling of sea-sickness, somewhat akin to the dodgy camera work on the Tom Cruise version of 'War of the Worlds'... Manitas was actually ill after seeing that, which we attributed to the swooping camera action, rather than the shameful way Mr Wells' excellent book was treated.

The way things go, the DVD will probably be out just in time for Christmas purchase. TV screens and definition these days are so good that I really don't think you'll miss much - and even if you've only got an old, steam powered telly, it's still going to be worth it.

True to form, my eccentric little offspring went 'erk' at the kissing and 'ahhhh' at the baby Thestral. Universal laugh from children and adults alike at the word 'wet' from Harry.

Walrus, while I sympathise, I suspect the special effects in the HP films (so far, at least) would be better appreciated on a cinema screen than a lounge room monitor. I'd recommend the cinema irrespective of any notions of being interested in HP as a phenomenon; I don't think the small screen can do enough justice to the cinematic effects in the films.

Either way, you'll enjoy the latest.

So book 7 is out on the 21st?
I expect that, if everything runs to form, I'll probably get a copy sometime in August (or possibly early September) when my local ASDA sell off hardback copies cheap (well, they have for the last few years, so why should this one be any different?).
A for the film, it's odds on that I'll not get to see it at the cinema, but I may well end up waiting until it comes out on DVD and then buying a cheap ex-rental copy.
I'll be interested in reading (and seeing) the latest products, but I'm not going to bust a gut over them.

We have OOTP in Imax here too but due to vertigo, I can't do Imax. I feel as if I'm falling through the night sky unchecked and end up clinging to my seat with my eyes squeezed shut. I REALLY hate that I can't go. But I AM going on Sunday to a normal theatre. We also can't wait for the HP Deathly Hallows Midnight Party at our local bookstore on the night of the release - lots of otherwise normal adults (and kids) dressed up as HP characters capering about and having a blast.

I'm taking my two kiddies (15 and 20!) to see it tomorrow, and all much looking forward to it- my daughter's seeing it first this evening with her friends but plans to see it several times (as she has the others).

Good to see the reviews on here, and to hear that the new film is J.K. Rowling's favourite so far.

The closest I got, pun intended, was that we had to sit in the front row as we didn't get there early enough to find 4 seats together - and when they were grandly swooping about it would feel as if I were falling UPWARDS into the screen...

Excellent movie. Truly entertaining, and I did re-read the book - they changed some minor stuff, and didn't leave out much (I am thinking of one thing in particular which I won't mention).

However, I hadn't realized that my nephew hadn't read any of the books - and he didn't like it, it was too creepy for him (and he's 18!)... I think even if you hadn't read the books or weren't into the concept, that it would still be a good movie.

I can hardly wait for next Friday midnight!

Umbridge was brilliant. Brilliant! Inspired...the kittens mewing in the detention scene just added that extra nerve-jarring component. ;) Gred and Forge's great exit was breathtakingly satisfying, though pretty much anything those boys do is okay by me. *grin* The kiss was sweet, a little more PG-13 than I was expecting really. And it was a treat to see more of Gary Oldman and David Thewlis (Lupin).

Sure, a few scenes felt rushed or played differently than I would have chosen, but overall I really enjoyed it.   I have a feeling the Majestic Bay Theatre is going to be getting a ridiculous amount of my money this summer.

Well, the kiss was closely observed by the elder daughter (only in passing by the younger) and both were impressed with the film as a whole, even though they were well aware of what had been left out. The Wesley Bros' farewell was regarded as especially spectacular.

Brilliant casting of Delores Umbridge.

The Children in my audience were quiet and enthralled thank goodness!

I forced myself NOT to re-read the book just before the movie came out, knowing that would increase the inevitable moments of "They left THAT out?!?!", which has to happen with the longest book and the shortest movie! (Or was GoF longer? Not by much!). Anyway, I'm hoping to see it tomorrow (or maybe a late night show tonight if I can persuade a friend to go with me. Hell, if she won't I'm tempted to hop on a bus anyway. ;))

I did see the clip of Dan Radcliffe on Leno, which was hilarious (he's really sort of geeky, which I find very endearing) and the clip they showed was the D.A. practicing the Patronus charm, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The special effects were excellent. :)

My eldest also read each book as it was released, and is just now re-reading the whole series. Me, I'm just re-reading The Half-Blood Prince in preparation for the new book. I guess I'll have to step aside when she wants to play through.

We saw the movie yesterday. I too found it quite moving in parts, and probably the best presented movie so far, although probably the one with the most left out.

Oddly enough McGrath - the last HP film had the same effect too... rows of rivetted children. Such a shame that others are not so effective at keeping quiet - most of the noise during the previous episode (that wasn't laughing at the film) came from adults talking through what they saw as 'the boring bits'.

I quite agree with alanabit. I suppose those were special effects - they just seemed like real magic.

We made a point of getting to see it straight off, while the kids would still be in school. Crowds of kids intey cinema can be a real pain, especially when its a long film, and the later Harry Potter stories are a lot more demanding than the early ones, and the films have to be as well. I was sure it'd be a case of the getting bored and messing about.

In fact the cinema turned out to be full of kids - either school parties or kids bunking off. But in fact they were a great audience - by which I mean they were as rivetted by what was happening on screen as I was, and hardly a peep out of them.

I've always felt that of the books, OOTP has been fairest in giving more substance and storyline to the 'other' members of the school and not concentrated exclusively on Harry, a wise move to flesh out his classmates.

I know I am going to get sent away with a flea in my ear for saying this, but I thought the new Harry Potter film was superb. I guess it's not for everyone and some folks are tired of the formula. I'm still a fan - a huge fan. I saw it with my son and girlfriend this afternoon and I was not just royally entertained - I was moved. The cinematography was as lovingly executed as always. It had the best direction ever. It was very pacy and had moments of black humour. The special effects were stunning and the performances of some of the minor characters were very moving. Ginny Weasley somehow established a strong presence without saying a word. I felt the film really transcended its genre and also came over as a strong statement about the value of loyalty and friendship. It has been some time since I enjoyed a film that much.
