Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pride of Tralee Town From: GUEST,Mike Date: 16 Feb 11 - 03:59 PM leeneia, leeneia, can you not read between the lines, Mary had dumped him and teenage or early love can be very intense. She left him for the richer man and,she had forsaken him for a man with money. What else could he think |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pride of Tralee Town From: RunrigFan Date: 15 Feb 11 - 03:44 PM Well False means based on mistaken, erroneous, or inconsistent impressions, ideas, or facts: false pride. Maybe the man, thought Mary was false cos he made a mistake, and based on false facts |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pride of Tralee Town From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 15 Feb 11 - 12:56 PM So what makes her false? As a teenager, she held hands with another teenager? This is enough to condemn her, totally and forever? And meanwhile, the boy leaves her to seek a better life in Australia. Doesn't that make him just as false? It's time to folk-process that last line into something that makes sense. |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE PRIDE OF TRALEE TOWN From: RunrigFan Date: 14 Feb 11 - 04:24 PM Thanks Mike So now hearing this again; you're right ;) Updated lyrics When I was a youth I rambled the hillsides night and day. When I was only seventeen my heart was light and gay, But tomorrow I am leaving from places all around, And I'm leaving lovely Mary, the pride of Tralee town. For I met her in the springtime at a dance near Banna Strand To see her and her companions; they'd be dancing hand in hand. She looked so slim and lovely in her dark green velvet gown, And I fell in love with Mary, the pride of Tralee town. I asked her if she'd take the floor and dance some steps with me. We did 'The Siege of Ennis' and some polkas wild and free, Her hair in long black tresses for her shoulders sailing down, And I danced the feet with Mary, the pride of Tralee town. For the summer months we courted beneath the Kerry stars. We sang out all the old ballads in the Ballybunion bars. For the castle green we wandered, and the silver moon beamed down, And I kissed my darling Mary, the pride of Tralee town. For the golden leaves of autumn gave way to winter's cold, And another came a-courting her, and he stole her heart of gold, For he had many acres, in the townlands all around, And it with, he showered at Mary, the pride of Tralee town. So farewell, my good companions. I'll take the morning train. I'm bound for South Australia, and you won't see me again. He's a richer but no better man, so my tears come tumbling down, For the fair false hearted Mary, the pride of Tralee town, For the fair false hearted Mary, the pride of Tralee town. (p.s. I'm not sure if it's "for the fair false heart of Mary", or "fair false hearted") |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pride of Tralee Town From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 09 Feb 11 - 02:03 PM how about: He had many acres, and townlands all around. My dictionary says that one definition of 'townland' is an Irish term for 'a section of land, constituted as a township, as part of a parish.' That makes sense as something a rich man might own. It sounds to me like the singer is singing 'cowlands,' but that may be a corruption. I prefer 'townlands.' |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pride of Tralee Town From: RunrigFan Date: 09 Feb 11 - 01:01 PM I'm not too sure on the line for he had many acres, in the town areas from all around? Can any deciper this line? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pride of Tralee Town From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 08 Feb 11 - 02:20 PM Here are most of the words (admittedly slapdash) to the rest of the verses, as sung on the YouTube video linked above. Interesting, the way Tralee rhymes with 'valley'. The Siege of Ennis is a well-known dance, I think. Is there another dance called 'The Feast'? That's what it sounds like in the next verse. ============ For i met her in the springtime at a dance near banna's strand to see her and her companions, they'd be dancing hand in hand she looked so slim and lovely, in her dark green, velvet gown and i fell in love with mary the pride of tralee town if asked her if she'd take the floor and dance some steps with me. we did 'the Siege of Ennis' and the polkas wild and free her hair in long black tresses her shoulders sailing down and i danced the Feast (?) with mary the pride of tralee town the summer months we courted beneath the Kerry stars we sang out all the old ballads in in the Ballybunion bars by the cattle green we wandered, the silver moon being down when i kissed my darling mary the pride of tralee town the golden leaves of autumn gave way to winters cold and another came a-courting her and he stole her heart of gold for he had many acres and the cowlands all around and it went ---------------- Mary the pride of tralee town So farewell my good companons I take the morning train i'm bound for south australia and you won't see me again he's a richer --- and a better man, so the tears come tumbling down what a -------------------- is Mary the pride of tralee town |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pride of Tralee Town From: GUEST,mg Date: 14 Jul 07 - 03:52 PM can't help you but if anyone is from there, my great grandmother was from there. Her name was Margaret Lyons (Maggie) and we don't know much about her...she was born 1830 to 1833. Her father's name was Cornelius Lyons. She ended up in Clermont Iowa by 1860 or so, married to Timothy Garvey. It was possibly an arranged or mail-order type marriage. Someone in the family (not necessarily the Lyons)owned a store in Cork... email me please at mgarvey@wsu.edu if you can shed any light on this...mg |

Subject: Lyr Add: SWEET KATIE, THE PRIDE OF TRALEE From: Shaneo Date: 14 Jul 07 - 07:38 AM Is this it ? 1. My tho'ts now are wand'ring far over the sea, They're clinging to dear Erin's lovely Isle, For there is one dearer than all else to me, I cherish her sweet voice and winning smile; I long for the hour when I'll meet you, dear Katie, My darling one over the sparkling blue sea, What joy it would bring to my heart yes, to me, To meet my sweet Katie, the pride of Tralee. CHORUS [sung after each verse] My thoughts now are wand'ring far over the sea, They're clinging to dear Erin's Isle, For this is one dearer than all else to me, My darling, my Katie, the pride of Tralee. 2. I know that your heart will be true to me still, Though I'm in a land, loved one, far away; When I cross the ocean to meet you again, You'll welcome me back to my home that day; In that little cottage, beside you, sweet Katie, O, what would be dearer than that, love, to me! I'd brave all the dangers of both land and sea, For Katie, my darling, the pride of Tralee. 3. Dear land of the Shamrock, the land of my birth, I love her green pastures and valleys fair, The home of my kindred, the home of my youth, Whereever I roam, yet my heart is there; And then there's a treasure, it is my own Katie; When dreaming all this, O what bliss then to me! My heart it is longing to cross the blue sea, To meet my sweet Katie, the pride of Tralee.S |
