Subject: Tech: Why Can't CD Burners Burn DVDs? From: wysiwyg Date: 14 Jul 07 - 12:40 PM If the CD burner on my PC can burn a data file, and turn a music CD into an MP3 data CD, why can't it copy a DVD? Is it that the software that runs the burner doesn't speak DVD format? ~Department of Simple/Dumb Questions |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why Can't CD Burners Burn DVDs? From: Geoff the Duck Date: 14 Jul 07 - 12:47 PM I expect you just answered your own question. DVD's are made to hold a lot more data on a disc which is the same dimensions as a CD. If a CD could hold the same amount of data, we wouldn't need DVDs. They MUST squash the data big time to fit it all in the sme space. A CD burner is designed to handle the data that fits a CD. Quack! Geoff. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why Can't CD Burners Burn DVDs? From: Peace Date: 14 Jul 07 - 01:01 PM Whatever you can burn to a CD will easily burn to a DVD. The reverse is not so. As Geoff said, DVDs are meant to hold LOTS more data. "The DVD disc DVDs are read using a red-light laser diode at a wavelength of 0.65 µm, compared to the 0.85 µm infrared laser used in early CD systems. This allows the pits on DVDs to be packed more tightly. Together with the use of both sides of the disc and a double data layer on each side the storage capacity is increased up to around 17 Gbytes (approximately 25 times that of a CD). Improved tolerances on the laser diode tracking system will also be required." |

Subject: RE: Tech: Why Can't CD Burners Burn DVDs? From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Jul 07 - 07:00 PM So, I'm wondering why I can't play MP3 CD's on the stereo in my car. They're in CD format, so the reader can read them. Is is simply a matter of programming, or would my stereo need an MP3 codec chip to decode the MP3? I can change some of the functions of my DVD player by burning programming onto a CD and playing it - can the same be done with a CD player? If I give it the right programming, can I train my CD player to do new tricks? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why Can't CD Burners Burn DVDs? From: Bill D Date: 14 Jul 07 - 09:49 PM No, Joe...if I understood what you said, you are playing MP3 'disks'...not CDs. Being on a round, CD shaped disk doesn't give you CD format automatically. (Your computer has software AND hardware that will read both.) We had a small car that Rita went out and bought a CD player for specifically because it WOULD play MP3s also. Then we damaged that car and had to take the insurance on it...and leave that player. We bought a newer, better car, but this CD player will NOT read MP3s. It just doesn't have the right setup. Now, in my van, I get around it with a gadget that is shaped like an old cassette tape, and allows me to plug my Sony portable CD player thru the radio/tape player. The Sony will play both formats. Now I want one that plays ogg vorbis natively...*grin* |

Subject: RE: Tech: Why Can't CD Burners Burn DVDs? From: Cluin Date: 14 Jul 07 - 10:21 PM To burn a DVD you will need a DVD burner. It's indistinguishable from a CD burner to most people, and costs about the same. It works the same as a CD burner too. You can easily create DVD data disks with it. But if you want to copy DVD movies you will need extra software to 1. Decode and rip the movie data from the original DVD and 2. Shrink the DVD data, if necessary. Most DVD movies today are on double-density disks which hold twice as much data as conventional DVD-R disks (9.4 gigs to 4.7 gigs, respectively). That's why you will sometimes see a glitch in a movie around halfway through--the screen freezes for a second--as it plays; the laser head is switching layers. Basically you've got two layers of digital data sandwiched on the double-density DVD and the laser has to change its focus to reach the next layer. You can buy double density DVD burners and DVD-R discs now but they are more expensive. You can easily shrink a full length double density disk movie to fit on a regular single layer DVD-R though, without noticing any degradation in picture or audio quality, unless you are using an extremely big screen TV. I use a program called DVD Shrink to do this. It allows you to choose which parts of the disk you want to include on the copy, including alternate soundtracks, captioning and DVD extras and menus. You can opt to just record the movie with no menus and only one soundtrack and the quality will undergo the least amount of shrinkage/degradation (you can even pick start and end points to copy if you want to eliminate long titles and credits at the end). But I have shrunk the movies as much as 50% and noticed little or no degradation of picture quality on my 29 inch TV screen. For actually ripping the movie to my hard drive I use a program called DVD Decrypter. Both programs were freeware downloads. The programs haven't been updated in quite a while due to legal reasons, but I've only come across one Disney movie that I couldn't copy this way. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why Can't CD Burners Burn DVDs? From: Greg B Date: 14 Jul 07 - 10:21 PM Audio CDs are encoded in one format--- distinctly different from MP3 CDs, which are basically data CDs which happen to have MP3's on them. Audio CDs are 'loss-less.' MP3 CDs contain MP3 files which are compressed with a 'lossy' algorithm (think the diff between a 'gif' image and a 'jpeg' image) that trades off size against quality. Some CD players can handle either format; but that's a relatively 'new' thing. My FJ Cruiser's 'stock' CD changer can play either standard CDs, or MP3 CDs. I can fit five or six compressed albums on MP3 CDs and since it's in a rather noisy vehicle, I 'rip' albums and then put the tracks onto CDs, changing the player's capacity from 6 'albums' into more like 30 or 40. This also helps with the fact that I don't like carrying my precious original CDs around in a dirty, dusty, vehicle that goes from home to work to barn and such. Then again, I have an IPOD connector, and even a 70-dollar IPOD 'shuffle' can hold a lot more than that, so why do I bother? I guess it'd be nice to have a 'CD' changer that would read MP3's off DVDs. That would be more like 300 albums, all in one changer. But the big problem them would be having some convenient way to access them when I wanted to get there. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Why Can't CD Burners Burn DVDs? From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Jul 07 - 10:46 PM Garg, I am sometimes uninformed, but never stupid. I'm driving a 1999 Honda with a newer Panasonic CD player - just about the only component I've had to replace on that car. I thought of getting a CD player with MP3 capability, but our local small-town stores didn't have one at other than ridiculously high prices.. So, my question is whether it's the hardware or the software ("firmware" - burned onto a flash chip) that makes a CD player able to play MP3s. I believe it requires a codec (coder-decoder) that decompresses the MP3s into playable form - and I'm wondering if this codec is hardware or software. it is my understanding that the transport (player) for the CD disk is the same, whatever it's playing. What's different is the processing of the data from that disk. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Tech: Why Can't CD Burners Burn DVDs? From: Greg B Date: 14 Jul 07 - 11:00 PM Joe, while the 'bits' are burned the same, it's a whole different kind of 'file-system' between 'data' and 'audio' CDs. So you're right--- it's really a 'software' thing, only it's 'firmware' on your car stereo, and you're very unlikely to find updated software to enhance what is essentially a 'closed' system. If you look around, I suspect you can probably find a product which will allow you to 'tap' an Ipod into the system. A better solution overall. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Why Can't CD Burners Burn DVDs? From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Jul 07 - 11:15 PM Well, I hacked my DVD player because its copy protection wouldn't work with my TV. I'm tempted to do another hack I found, that's supposed ot make it capable of playing DVDs from all regions - but I don't have any out-of-region DVDs to try on it. And hacking a DVD player was so much fun (and so successful), that I wondered if I might also be able to hack a car CD player. I also reset my camera so that it barks when I snap a picture.... -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Tech: Why Can't CD Burners Burn DVDs? The skill is in judging the moment to open the door. Mushrooms combust. Food I know... DVD/CD/MP3/DDT/ABC/LOL and cassettes, I know nothing. LTS |

Subject: RE: Tech: Why Can't CD Burners Burn DVDs? From: JohnInKansas Date: 15 Jul 07 - 05:26 AM Well, I hacked my DVD player because its copy protection wouldn't work with my TV Joe - I may have only imagined it because it wasn't what I was looking for; but I think that somewhere in my browsing through the comics at the Microsoft Knowledge Base I saw an instruction for changing the "region" for your DVD player/burner in Vista, with the comment buried in the fine print that "you can only change it twice(?)" before Vista blocks subsequent changes/different selections. If it's true, it might be something worth knowing before you start trying to "generalize" your "regionalities." I would expect something to be in Vista Help files if it matters, but ... (there are some nasty rumors about how helpful Help files are). - - - If you're talking about the DVD player in your Vista computer, that is.(?) John |
