Hi Ewan McViar, I have a one taken at Howard Park bandstand in Kilmarnock in the early 70s. It is a bit gritty and grainy, scaned from one of my badly procesed negs.

I'll pass on the info kindly given above to the researcher - usually that means nothing further happens, not even an acknowledgement of your efforts, but this researcher is polite at least.

I know I have a photo, signed - but the ink has long faded - from Berlin in 1978! If I can locate it withing the next couple of weeks I'll try and get it to you.

Hi Ewan,
Hamish appears on the front of the Folkways LP Ding, Dong, Dollar, (1959) probably the first 'political' LP he was associated with. He was, however, 'an audience' then and didn't play or sing on the album. I remember broadcasting (illegally) from his house in Broomhill songs sung by Josh Macrae and Nigel Denver. I built the radio transmitter and we used to crash into the BBC TV about 11PM. The SNP at the time asked us not to disrupt the National Anthem!!

Not clear why Tam equates Hamish with Royalty in this way. Hamish was in the forefront of 1960s political anti-bomb action, and sang and recorded political songs all his life. He even got blacklisted by some right wing League for it. See his account in the book Cod Liver Oil and the Orange Juice.

Although his repertoire regularly included songs commenting on political issues and he was certainly well to the left of centre, he was never what would be called a "political" performer and he was highly amused at finding he was included on the Economic League's blacklist of so-called "Communist" agitators. He commented, "I have friends who regard me as a wishy-washy liberal!"

Fair enough, Tam, but I still don't get how that places him next to Charles Windsor. Not many all out professional 'political' performers around ever - Dick Gaughan, Christy Moore, the Wolftones. Who else? Leon Rosselson I suppose. Not Iain Mackintosh.

Photo with me and Freddie Anderson helping each other not fall off an overcrowded stage was at Hamish Henderson's 80th birthday celebration in the Riverside Club, Glasgow, organised by Geordie MacIntyre. I didn't get to sing on the stage until the big finale!The highlight was the presentation of a large commissioned portrait of HH that was so modernistic Hamish H could not contain his mirth. It was strapped on top of a car for the journey back to Edinboro, and blew off on the M8. It was rescued, and apparently considered by some to have been improved by the incident. Wonder what happened to it.

I can't agree with Tam and I think Hamish was being a bit self-effacing as was his wont. Ewan will remember his records with Josh MacRae and Bobby Campbell as the Emmettones. By the way, Ewan, Nigel Denver is still giving it laldy in Birmingham and Dublin where he is often a guest of Ronnie Drew.

Another two out and out political singer / songmakers I should add - Alistair Hulett, Roy Bailey.
Well, Jim, one of my great memories is the Alan Glen's Skiffle Group led by Nigel Denver winning their heat in the Carol Levis Talent Show at the Glasgow Kings Theatre. It was a fix, the audience was half school blazers. Our allegience was much tested by the winsome young lady singer who came second on the Swingometer.

You seem to have a fixation about Nigel Denver and his skiffle group -I have a copy of a book of yours and this is all you can find to talk about in that as well. I should point out that Nigel was a fifteen year old school boy then.   As pointed out Nigel was a Glasgow Eskimo, and went on to record on various labels. He is still in fine voice. If your talking about political, what about his "Scottish Republican" record.

Sorry to offend you, Mary Lou. I tend to repeat the stories I know and like, in context. No disrespect to Nigel, you'll note it was a 'great memory'. As I recall Jim Maclean has written about Nigel on various Mudcat threads?
Looking forward to your book about Nigel. When I think on it, maybe Ian Wade was the group 'leader' and Nigel lead singer that day? You'll be checking this, and the date, of course.
Or, to put it another way,why on earth should I - when mentioning in a specific context a singer I have a certain fond memory of I want to share [even though I already shared it in a book that some other reader here might have read] - be expected to write about his or her entire career? When others have already done a better job of this, and know more stories about him or her, while I only have one anecdote though lots of scattered memories and bits of knowledge?
Who exactly has got what fixation?

After writing the above I did a forum search. As I expected, Nigel is mentioned repeatedly by others who know more about what he did after he left school that I ever can. They detail recordings, performances, contacts and experiences. Read what they say, don't complain about what I don't say.

Why haven't Nigel Denver albums been reissued on CD? The only CD that I can find any reference to is a 1999 album titled 'Gimme Peace' on Jock Independent Records. Can anyone suggest how a copy of this can be obtained?
