Yeah, searching for me proved fruitless as well. I think really the only shot at this is finding someone who owns that record and seeing if they can confirm it.

"Goodnight Vienna by Robert Chester (Released by Eclipse (291) in 1932.) Robert Chester recorded two other records for the Eclipse label, “A King of the road am I”, and “You are my heart’s delight” but otherwise very little is known about him. Some sources say Robert Chester was a pseudonym for the actor Darroll Richards, however this is unconfirmed."

I checked under both names but can't find it online.

Subject: Lyr Add: SONG OF THE AUTOMOBILE
From: Peace
Date: 19 Jul 07 - 02:22 AM

Stumbled on this while looking for that:

THE SONG OF THE AUTOMOBILE

    My motors chant their tireless song,
      Their throbbing, chugging, purring roar,
    I leap and lurch my way along
      The road that stretches far before;
    And all aquiver through my length,
      With sense of power unconfined,
    I glory in my maddened strength
      And toss the puny miles behind.

    Way! Way! make way! I swing and sway,
    With whizzing wheels I flicker by,
    With throb and cough my motors bray,
    Way! Way! make way! I swing and sway,
    To the beat and stamp of the motors' play,
    For I am the King of the road. Yes I!
    Way! Way! make way! I swing and sway,
    With whizzing wheels I flicker by!

    The white road spins beneath my wheels,
      My motors hum a shriller hymn,
   My staunch frame shivers, rocks and reels,
    I hold my pace unslacking, grim;
   The hills leap up and then are gone;
    I swirl like wind the valleys through,
   And ever I go flashing on
    And ever rings my voice more true!

   Clear! Clear! all clear! when my song you hear
   And let me flash and flicker by.
   My strength is the strength of forty steer.
   (Clear! Clear! all clear! when my song you hear,)
   And my speed is the speed of a frightened deer
   And the King, the King of the road am I!
   Clear! Clear! all clear! when my song you hear,
   And let me flash and flicker by.
                                     -A. B. Braley.

Doesn't sound familiar. Any other clues? Was your school in England?

Hi all,

Just joined you at the Mudcat Cafe and wondered if anyone could help with a song from my childhood.

I had a wonderful teacher during the late sixties (originally from Singapore) who taught us lots of old British folk songs, which we'd sing while he played the piano.

I can remember some lyrics and the tune from one paricular song, but can't find it anywhere. It goes;
    I walk along the roads and highways,
    Singing as I swing along,
    Through all the country lanes and byways,
    What is life without a happy song?

    Chorus:
    Up with the dawn, welcome to the morn,
    Day by day goes by,
    Monarch for the day of all that I survey,
    I'm king of the road am I.

Can anyone help?
