Hi everyone, sorry if this exists but i don't know how to find it, it'a a song about a poacher who gets caught and his defence is that 'he is teaching his worm how to swim' lyrics and chords would be an early birthday present.

thanks a bunch

ritchie

The song was written by the late Bill Newton and he can be heard singing the song on the 'Visiter' tape, which can be purchased through the Robin Hoods Bay Folk Club.

Shellbacker, Arthur Marsden also sings the song brilliantly and he will be at Saddleworth this weekend.

Tony Leonard sings this song great and is the organiser of this week-ends Staithes Singaround.

Teaching Me Worm How To Swim………………Bill Newton

Dm
I was sat by the river with me rod and line
C                        Dm
Nice and comfortable feeling fine
            C                        Dm
When this bailiff feller said , what are you doin
C                   Dm
If you don't own up I'll have to run you in

            C                                Dm      Am                               Dm
I said I'm teaching me worm, how to swim,         Teaching me worm how to swim
          F                C                    Am                           Dm
He's looking fit, he's looking trim He's trained for hours down in the gym
       C                               Dm                       Am                                 Dm
The rod and line's just to steady him, I'm teaching me worm how to swim

Dm
He said the sign up there says the fishing's private
             C                            Dm
And the only conclusion that I can arrive at
          C                    Dm
Is that far from animal aquatic coaching
C                       Dm
What your doin is bloody poaching

Chorus
Then he said what are all these worms in a tin
Your surely not going to throw them all in
I said their skills are highly prized
Coz they do swimming what's synchronised

Chorus
Just then me worm was grabbed by a trout
And in trying to rescue I pulled the fish out
Then I shouted what are you going to do,
Your fish eat me worm, now I'm going to sue

Chorus

Dm
Now I know your Honour you judge on merit
       C                               Dm
Just like last week with me cave rescue ferret
       C               Dm
My interest is in animal coaching
       C                         Dm
You surely can't think I was poaching

Bill Newton wrote a further 400 songs beside 'worm', the copyright of all of which is now owned by Marion Hall. Before he died (7 July 2000), Bill recorded eight cassettes of his most popular songs copies of most of which are available from Marion. All proceeds from the sale of bill's songs go to cancer research. Conditional copyright clearance for making recordings can also be obtained from Marion. As we have ownership of the masters of all Bill's recorded work, it is planned to re-release the cassettes as a boxed set of four CDs if there is sufficient demand.

You can get further details of anything relating to Bill Newton's material from Marion at: j.m.hallhome@btinternet.com

Hi Lynne :-)

I videoed Denis Bostock doing this at our Wooler Ukulele Weekend Away on Saturday - I hope you enjoyed your party, we had a good one! :-)

I was wondering who had written this song and ended up here, you meet all the best people on Mudcat - I bet my bottom dollar that's Ritchie Foster further up this thread!

I will be posting the video to Facebook and YouTube soon so I will tag you on Facebook and send you the YouTube link :-)

Best wishes,

Lizzie X

Denis did a cracking version as was his 'sound of silence' ... mind you the piece de .. was Marie Little "stay one more night" ... any idea who wrote that or are the chords anywhere? you certainly seemed to have a good time, I'm pleased xx
