Bobad!
How about starting a thread on a truly very important person in the folk music industry. I think Mike Regenstreif deserves a thread by himself amd your the man who should start it.
Last of my visitors left this morning and already I'm on the phone discussing next year and possible folks to play.
Talk soon.

Mike Regenstreif today announced that he will be hanging up his host's hat and handing the reins over to Gerry Goodfiend. Thank you Mike for thirteen and a half years of great programming and interviews and for keeping the flame of folk music burning bright. Best of luck in your future endeavours.

I'm just listening to the podcast now and want, no NEED, to add my thanks to Mike for all that great radio. The guests, the choice of music, the sequencing have all been the best.

And what a guest list with the likes of Bruce Murdoch, Tom Russell, Ian Tyson, Sylvia Tyson, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Judy Collins, Anne Hills, Michael Smith, Wade Hemsworth, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Noel Paul Stookey, Utah Phillips, the Klezmatics, Rosalie Sorrels, Rick Fielding, Dave Van Ronk, and so many more.

Thursdays for me has meant Folk Roots/Folk Branches for years now.

I felt a great sense of sadness when Mike told me he'd be leaving the show. The first thing folks have to understand about Mike is that he's knowledgeable about folk music and sincere in his love for it. He's a great interviewer because to him it's about the person on the other side of the microphone and he checks the background of the people he has on, so he already knows the answers to many of the questions he asks. He has an exquisite sense of when to redirect, clarify or let his guest go on. That is rare in my experience with radio shows--and I've done many of them over the years. However, the quality of the man and his love for the music and people who make it shows in the transition. Gerry Goodfriend is up to speed on the way things are done, and while I know that Gerry will add his personal stamp, I also know the show will maintain its high quality standard, because Gerry is one good guy with a love for music that rivals Mike's. CKUT FM will continue to be in good hands.

As to a festival for next year: I truly hope there will be one, Adrien. Perhaps you don't know, and if you don't you should, that it is a wonderful event. It's well organized (and I won't embarrass you by singling you out for praise in that regard, but praise you deserve). It was a pleasure to meet many of the festival committee members and people who did so much of the dog work to ensure that the folks on stage were treated like some kind of visiting VIPs and the folks in the audience were treated to a well-run festival. You have done with a cast of tens what many other festivals with a cast of hundreds have failed to do: namely, you make the performers feel appreciated and valued. That ain't as common as it should be.

Thanks to your fire department, I was given a tour of two pieces of apparatus--their rescue vehicle and a rapid attack vehicle. They are a neat bunch of guys, and I was able to take away a good idea regarding motor vehicle stabilization for our department to consider.

The people who displayed and sold their crafts were so polite and friendly. In fact, there were no miserable people there at all. When Bob, Chris and I took 20 minutes to prepare for the set, we went to the barn to park it and practise. I never leave my guitar unattended anywhere, ever, at all, under any circumstance, period. I did there and wasn't the least worried. Parking was great, seating good, bathrooms available and camping area for people with trailers or tents were to hand.

Many people who'd stayed here and there at the festival made mention of the friendliness of the town's people and merchants.

The stage crew was something else. It was so good to hear and see them keeping track of the clock and ensuring that performers stuck to their times. It was so enjoyable, and I want to thank you for making it so. My one regret was not having enough time to sit and relax with my friends. Another 7,642 hours would have been nice. If you invite me again, I will be sure to get there and stay from Thursday night until Monday morning. However, I did get to meet some folks from the Mudcat and also re-meet some friends from 35 years ago. There were personal highlights for me, but right up there with that has to be seeing and hearing Noah Zacharin again, meeting his lovely partner who is also a fantastic singer/musician, and having the opportunity to sit with the two of them and write a song together from 1:00 - 4:30 AM, Sunday. Noah's guitar work was right on, and he wasn't at all bothered by syncopations. Laura Fernandez's voice is beautiful, and her harmonies were crucial to the song's development. Noah is a fine lyric writer and he knows when the rules should be ignored. It was an experience I will treasure, because egos got left at the door and we were able to put together a song that absolutely rocks. It is at once new and exciting, old and familiar. We still have to look again at the third stanza, but the rest is as good as anything I've heard in years, and like the man said, it does the job. Thanks to you both. More tomorrow about specific people.

Friends: It's Friday morning, and I awake to the news that Mike Regenstrief is leaving the show. I'm trying right now to find some words, but I can't...Here's a guy whose love of Folk Music is so great, and his support so strong, over so many years...All I can say is thanks for all you've done Mike.
I don't want to take up too much space here, and PEACE has pretty much summed up my feeling regarding Ormstown. It was surreal to me, so many fine people...It went by in a nanosecond. A great memory. Thanks to all of you...

good to hear you again old friend.... even a week or so later.. I was in BC doing some session work while this was transpiring...the thought was there. Glad that Mike archives the shows for later listening. Brought back memories, esp. knockin' around with you and Gagnier. Keep working on the guitar, I've never stopped and always find something new when I play.... Willie Dunn and I hooked up about 10 years ago. Ended up touring and recording together for awhile. He remains one of my closest friends. We helped each other out of some personal doldrums. He's playing in Lunenburg this week-end, by the way. Migmaw country and the bluenose...so he still gets out there every now and then.. I once had supper at Vignault's house in Deux Montanges...nice man.. I used to knock around a lot on the other side of the linguistic/cultural scene of Quebec. Still do a bit. I was lucky. Still am. funny he married a blue-eyed blonde from TMR, tho.
The Gagnier song that was mentioned earlier was 'San Mescalito' written during the early Castenada period and enhanced by certain substances. I miss him... Hi Mary.... thanks Bruce.. much luv Ron

Also, someone in Montreal was askin' after Willie and all I could say was he'd better be makin' music, too. I guess we've all come from "School days, school days, good old broken rule days." Hi back at you with warmest regards. When you're in touch with Willie tell him that, well, just tell him.

Mary, it's your old Mtl. roomate, Cat. Ron (Rawn, of old)just sent me the link to Bruce's show with Mike, and I then told him that I'd been trying to google contact info for you with no success; he pointed me to this thread. I've thought of you soooo many times over the years - the memory of you always brings a smile. (I'll never forget your Lily Tomlin telephone operator impersonation!) I also can hear your voice still, singing Spanish Boots, or Let Me Be Your Woman.

And yeah, it was so great to hear Bruce again! I just tried the addy you gave Bruce on 26 July 07, and my ISP returned it as undeliverable. Hope I don't get spammed now, but here goes, using code, AT for @: fringy(AT)telus.net. (Bruce, or anybody remembering me from Mtl. days, bring it on!)
Hugs, you!

Ron, you talking about Willie Dunn made me remember the very nice CD you did with Dennis Lakusta, Run With You...last year or before, you gave me a weblink where I could hear your stuff & get the lyrics. After 'the crash' I lost it. If you're still on that website, could you give the link again? 'Cause I think some of the folks in here would like it. A lot. I think it was a Nashvile site?

And thanks so much, for tipping me off to Bruce on the radio! Wow, whaaaat a blast!

DENNIS LAKUSTA: 'Run With You'
DJL 001
Review by Barry Newman

Formerly a railway worker and a cab driver, Lakusta (now 50) bought his first guitar at a Vancouver pawnshop on an impulse when in his early twenties. His melodic songwriting reflects a vast wealth of experiences and inspirations - being on the road, his Metis roots, the late Lenny Breau, damage to the environment, a friend who succumbed to breast cancer - with very subtle & effective chord changes and beautiful lyrical phasing.
'Wonders' is Dennis' tribute to nature (in particular, BC's Nicola Valley) which features very sweet and haunting chants, as does 'Let The River Run', a lament about chemical contamination of our rivers & streams.
Musicians include Ron Bankley (lead guitar & harp), Tammy Fassaert (bass), Nancy Taylor (backup vocals), Doug Thornton (fiddle & viola). Produced by Dennis with Ron Bankley, recorded & mixed at Big Blue Fish Studios and mastered by Don Blegg at Pacific North Studios.
Dennis Lakusta's CD is a wonderfully warm and soothing delight... perfect medicine for the end of a hectic day. Contact:

I am moved back to Michigan, Bruce, and overcoming a ton of problems that come from leaving a house for 2 1/2 years. Add that to the fact that my current assignment involves Smithfield and organizing slaughter/packinghouse workers in South Dakota, northwestern Iowa, and northeastern Nebraska, which means I fly out on Monday, and fly home on Friday, and it makes it difficult to get it done. But we are managing. I am playing a bit of music out here, and coming to know some Mexicano musicians, which ought to have an interesting influence on my music. I am having to use my Spanish, which I haven't done on a daily basis in some years, but it is coming back nicely.

Ah ..... the life of a union organizer/folksinger. It ain't fer everyone, but it is who I am. Hope we get the chance to sing together one day. I wanted to make the Canadian gathering so badly, but I just couldn't squeeze it in with the move.

All the best,

Mick

I think we ought to figure a way to Southern Cal, Bruce. I still want us to do "Get Together" at some venue. And labor music, and activism music, hell yes, we can do that.

Mexican influence on the music sounds really interesting too.

hey Cat, I'll get you a copy of 'Run with You' as soon as I unpack a few more boxes. Maybe next month. His new one should be out early next year. I've left trax all over it...

To Aziz and DeeDee, I remember the words to San Mescalito, played it many times with the 'Ghost Rider' himself.... also, 'Bird's Eye View', ' Circle Harbour Parable' and of course 'Out of Sight, Out of Mind'.... the lyrics are sparse to Mescalito, a lot of repetition, but the music is haunting...Spanish/Mexican feel.. Tom Russell would have fun.. I could sit down and record a version for y'all, I pack a small digital studio around, just in case.. easier that a 750 lb., 2 in. Studer. So get in touch, and I'll see what I can do.... Ron

San Mescalito pray for me now por favor
I'm lost on the high range and feeling so strange
and I can't find the door
Lost in the strange way out on the range
Never been here before

I'm free as the dogs and I fly with the crows, na na na na na
I climb on the wind and talk to my friend
And I don't need my clothes

I raised up my head and looked at his face na na na na na
I felt I would die there were pieces of sky
where his eyes should have been.....         Sean Gagnier

well, Aziz, you got to hear it, but you're right.... there's a haunting minor key chorus... but it resolves now and then, which gives some hope to the listener... due to recent interest, perhaps i'll record it one of these days along with a couple of other songs by Sean. Sketches for the archives..I wouldn't want to see it all forgotten.
there was a funny episode of the Simpsons where Homer ate a bunch of 'magic' jalepeno peppers, and ended up 'lost on the high range', but was befriended by a talking coyote whose voice was done by Johnny Cash... brillant..... i'll let you know when it's recorded, in a few weeks i reckon.... Ron

I always thought Sean, read the book before or after a trip that had opened a window for him, and that he experienced similiar to what writer had. Those strange states of conciousness that one can be in. Even Wayne Dyer on new pbs show quoted old man saying One day woke up and knew I had no need of a personal history. being like dogs and birds   free no need for clothes or diff public selfs true to his soul the pieces of sky meaning spirit or soul too high to get caught up down here.   That is what it meant for me..

Reading lastest,Had memory of Murdock, Havens being on same bill at Blue Lantern and Willie Dunn showing up now and then Thank you so Bankley. I have wanted the words for years.

the Blue Lantern on Stanley St. Dylan played there too, early on. It changed names and owners a few times. The Seven Steps, The Rainbow. There was a room downstairs called the Totem Pole, used to play there occasionally with a band "The Urge", first saw Bruce, Sean, Van Ronk and many others up close and personal. It's now a 'Subways'... The Pam-Pam across the street was the watering hole., I think there's still a resto-bar there.... good times.......   Ron

"The Blue Lantern" AKA "Le PotPourri"

June 28 , 1962: An unknown folksinger by the name of Bob Dylan plays Montréal for the first time at the back of a small club right around the corner from radio station CKGM, then situated at 1455 Drummond. The club is known at this time as "Le PotPourri" (later The Seven Steps), located at 1432 Stanley Street. Dylan is booked for 4 evenings and is payed $125.00 for his total stint, playing in front of only a handful of nightly patrons. Dylan extends this first Montréal visit by performing an additional one-nighter on July 2nd at The Finjan Club on Victoria Street.

I think the Dylan tape from the Finjan was actually recorded by Jack Nissenson and that Michael Nerenberg eventually ended up with it. It's become a fairly common Dylan bootleg and is quite easy to come by in CD form on the Dylan bootleg sites.

you folks have impressive memories.... this is going back almost half a century. Here's an idea for John... get a cd bootleg copy and transfer it back to the Ferrograph recorder, preferably on some decent vintage tape ... then you have an interesting package, Road Show or not.....

Finally had a chance to hear the broadcast. Great songs and fascinating stories--basket houses etc.--and wonderful wry humor.

We're lucky to have Bruce on Mudcat.

Yup. And, I would like to put in a plug for Beer. No, no, no.... I mean Adrien. I am not party to all the details, but his time and effort played large in getting Bruce on that stage. Thanks Beer.

I'll also say, I like his guitar playing, his singing and his storytelling. And, I did into the wee hours of today. He's a cool dude. He even made my old Seagull sing better than it has for years. Thanks Adrien.

Thanks Gnu for those kind words. It was great meeting you and dusting off your axe and sharing a drink. Am now at my sister and brother in law's in N.S.for a week or so. Purpose of trip is also to look at the future of the festival. I have some major decisions to make and hopefully I will have them all worked out by the time I get back.

I was just listening to Mike Regenstreif interviewing Noah Zacharin on yesterday's Folk Roots/Folk Branches and Mike and Noah were talking about David Bromberg. Noah said something about Bromberg touring again after many years and Mike responded by saying something along the lines of (I'm paraphrasing) sometimes an artist needs to go away from music for a period of years before coming back better than ever. I thought of Bruce Murdoch when he said that.

If there is a next year, Noah is high on my list.
