I hope that the misunderstandings re the passing of Colin are now over. I did not know Colin but after reading the messages on this thread, I wish that I had.

Now back to the Wail. At one of the sings, I heard an extra verse to Keith Marsden's Funeral Song, a favorite of song mine. The verse was, to my mind, extremely funny. Please, can anyone supply the words?

When the announcement was made the session came to a complete halt and Jim MacAdam was completely dumstruct for a minute or two. We restarted the session with Jim leading the song. I believe that Colin (who was a mate of mine)would not have wanted a session ended because of him.

Those of us that knew Colin have expressed or sense of loss in the other threads and those of us that can are going ton the funeral.

What is being said in this thread is that The Wail was a great success despite the loss of our friend and yours.

Scooby - why are you not jumping into other threads to tell us all how to grieve and mourn our friend? No mention on the Fylde Festival thread... no mention on the Towersey thread, where he'd also been in the past... nothing in the Secret Santa threads either. Surely we can't be thinking of doing the Secret Santa without Col, who was an integral part of it on more than one occasion...?! Why not in the Shrewsbury festival thread?

Please, back off and keep the grief to the Obit and funeral threads. There were people at Wareham who haven't the foggiest idea who Col was. If you're ashamed of us, then fine, but keep it to yourself and admonish us individually in PMs and when we meet face to face. Wareham was a bloody great weekend until Sunday afternoon and lots of people want to remember it like that, before the hammer fell.

When the news of Colin's early move to the other bar was announced , a silence you could almost taste fell over the room. Jim chose just the right song to bring us all back. Yes there where many tearfull eyes for a while but many laughs and perhaps slightly subdued merriment. Colin would have been proud and touched by our response I'm sure.

We did not know Colin well, but had met him, liked what we knew of him and were saddened by the news.

We have seen him working at various festivals, doing any number of different jobs. Colin and people like him help to create the environment that generates the warmth, friendship and fun that you get at the Wail and other festivals. Without them it would not happen, and without the enjoyment their efforts would be wasted. Please do not regard our frivolity as disrespectful, but as a celebration.

A number of wailers have already indicated that they will be attending the Funeral. Believe me, we have not and will not forget Colin.

Colin has attended the Wail on several occasions and thoroughly enjoyed himself, but he felt it was a bit far to travel for a weekend especially with Fylde just down the road.

Yas - this is a thread about the Wareham Wail, which was brilliant, and which Col would have loved if he'd been there (and if it hadn't always clashed with Fylde).

We heard about Col in the Sunday lunchtime singaround - the announcement was made by Richard of Taskforce just before it was Jim McAdams' turn to sing, and poor Jim had to follow it. He sang "Where ravens feed", very movingly.

Please don't beat us up for celebrating the Wareham Wail on the WW thread - it deserves to be celebrated, and we aren't in any way hiding our grief about Colin, which we are expressing on the threads about Colin.

Well we thought that it was a superb weekend with Singarounds that were well run and democratic. What a change from those where "only my mates get a sing and we get lots"
NO high viz jackets or walkie talkie toting control freaks. It was just simply lovely.
The only problems arose from a misunderstanding with my Leige who did not understand a sincere compliment I did not call him Vassal but complimented him on his vast member.
For this I was unfairly flagellated and what was far worse was deprived of any CRACKLING. This will be remembered
Please could Alan and his lovely team run some Training Days for other organisers?

Hello Peeps

Well it might have taken Andy 18 years to find the Wail but it was well worth the wait, such a relaxing weekend. I was worried on Saturday about the time flying by, it was only 1.15pm!! That gave me plenty of time for a snooze to enable me to stay up to the wee small hours.

The banquet was such good fun, it was so good to see everyone in costume, the table service was outstanding, task force worked very very hard, did they have to sing for their supper??

Thanks to the kitchen crew. excellent service, always with a smile, yummy food, yummier scones (or scones) and cream.......... (sorry I was dribbling there for a minute).

A big thank you to the girls for taking me under their wing, I laughed alot it was most therapeutic.

It was lovely to reunite with so many friends.

Thanks to Allan, Nikkie and their team, I do understand just how tired you must be, but book us in for next year please.

A Yank's thanks to all who helped make the Wareham Wail a wonderful and thoroughly enjoyable experience for a wandering visitor and first-time attendee.

To Morti, who suggested that I attend and paved the way for it after only have known me in Mudcat print, something I hope you didn't have any cause to regret beyond my returning Jack to your camp.

To Hils, Richard and Liz The Squeak, who transported me to and from the event and provided food and lodging at their homes as well.

Also, of course, to those who transported me to various places of delight in song and story.

To all those who offered cures both refreshingly liquid and genuinely medicinal for a bad throat, hopefully enabling anything I performed to be "rendered" in the manner befitting a good folk song, and NOT in that befitting a carcass for a banquet.

To all translators, instigators, advisors, cooks, costumers and organizers who helped out a bewildered foreigner.

To the Middell Barre Table for adopting me and bringing me into the dinner plans, songs and plots.

And to all the Mudcat names who now have faces to go with them, as well as new friends and contacts some of whom, hopefully, I will be sharing songs and correspondance well into the future.

I hope I was able to give back something somewhere near the quality and of the spirit what I recieved.

I hope to be able to return someday, should they still decide to let any Yanks in in the future .

Pig roasts are fairly traditional in England - the mediaeval banquet menu does cater for vegetarians, though I can understand that they might not want to attend an event which involves singing the Boar's Head Carol as the pig's head is borne on a salver to the top table.

The big attractions of the Wareham (relocated to Verwood) Wail are the high standard of unaccompanied singing and the lovely rural Dorset setting.

I have a suggested cure and it involves a couple of fields in Dorset, an indefinite number of like-minded loonies, several marquees and a pig. Yes, honestly guys, a pig.

Between the above and the fun to be had in kidnapping it's head, presumably after it's been separated from the rest of it, there is not much mention of the pig.

So loonies, tell me;
Is it alive when it arrives at the wail with the killing all part of the festivities?
Should it be billed as a "dead pig"?
It all sounds very traditional and a wonderful feature for the weekend.

I made the jam a while ago, and whilst it's perfectly good jam, it's unlabelled and thus unidentifiable. It may be strawberry, it may be raspberry... it may be a conglomorate of red fruits - there is no way to tell.

Thus, it's just 'red jam' as opposed to the inferior orange jam - that is, it's orange in colour and may be apricot flavoured - that is in the same cupboard and also unlabelled.

Liz, the weekend ticket is for the weekend & camping & inclues the banquet. The meal ticket will cover food over the weekend. So, it depends on whether you want to fend for yourself or eat communally.

Kitty, the leaflet has been updated to Grandad's specs, you'll have to take it up with him if you don't agree with it. And although I know there are other festivals and later, this is the very last Main one for us and, of course, has a very special place for us, as it does for you and Derek.

Morty - I think it might be time for Alan or Idris to update the leaflet. Derek and I will be there - he'll be running sessions in one of the marquees, as the last of the regular Poole Bay Shantymen/ Free Toast attendees. For the last several years, all the programmed sessions have been organised, and any type of unaccompanied song is acceptable in any of the sessions. The raucous jump-in shanties and noisy/ boisterous songs session is the late Friday night one!

But you're right that it's a very therapeutic weekend, with lots of great singing and huge fun - highly recommended!

We many of us know about the deep gloom that possesses our souls on a Sunday night with the realisation that Monday is just a few hours away and therefore we must bid farewell to the careless rapture of the weekend and say hello again to our desk, boss and in-tray. For me, this is magnified 100 times in September where, except for the occasional blip on the radar screen, the long, hot (or miserable and rainy) summer of festivals draws to a close. Winter holds nothing but cold, dark music-less days and the world is a dimmer and sadder place.

I have a suggested cure and it involves a couple of fields in Dorset, an indefinite number of like-minded loonies, several marquees and a pig. Yes, honestly guys, a pig. It won't banish winter but, if you are anything like me, it will put a smile on your face for a couple of weeks as you recall the glorious harmonies, the lunacy of the medieval banquet and the energy, enthusiasm and friendliness of the participants.

Wareham Wail in Verwood, Dorset takes place this year from 31st August to 2nd September. It is held down a dirt track, in a couple of fields surprisingly well furnished with the necessaries ( loos and showers) as well as a kitchen turning out breakfasts, dinners and a fantastic, freshly made cream tea on Saturday afternoon for those of us who are sick of our camping stoves by then... which is pretty much everyone, right?

The unaccompanied singing takes place in any one of the three marquees that take your fancy or, if you like, you can drift between the three, you faithless hussy, you! We have the Shanty or any other big, boisterous songs you care to sing tent. There is the Folk Club tent, which tends toward the quieter, more reflective singers and songs, beautifully managed by experienced organisers and witness to some of the loveliest songs and sounds I have heard anywhere. Somewhere in the middle there's a singaround, usually managed by a twig or similar, being passed around so everyone gets a turn. All three marquees have a bar and all have real, and usually very good, ale, rum and shrub and other essential ingredients to a good sing.

Sometime on or around Saturday morning there is a medieval costume workshop, all materials supplied for a small donation to charity, in preparation for the marginally managed chaos that is the Banquet.

About midnight on Saturday we all solemnly file into the biggest marquee, now softly lit and hung with banners and bejewelled with long banqueting tables set for the fabulous 4 course meal that is to come. The top table has its benevolent King, Queen and Courtiers,freshly chosen that day for their charm, talent and ability to shout very loudly when necessary. The other tables hold the rabble, peasants and proles set on shenanigans and, generally, getting outside of as much wine as possible (bring your own bottle(s)).

How to describe the songs sung by the assembled company, to accompany the rich fare, or the majesty of the occasion when the pig's head is brought before the company, apple ensconced between it's molars and a rather surprised expression on it's face? Or perhaps I could try and describe the appallingly undignified and increasingly desperate attempts to kidnap said pig's head, the sheer effrontery of the supposedly good and gentle burghers of our temporary village and the ribald songs and jokes that are an inevitable part of this process?

Perhaps not though; perhaps you should come along and check it out for yourself? It's the best cure for the end of the summertime/end of the festivals blues that I know.
