There was an old birthday thread that somebody resurrected for me this year, and many people posted to it. Then Harpy started a new thread with my birth date in the title, since my sister "outed" me this year and revealed that date on Facebook. I figured I'd better combine the two threads, lest somebody accuse me of narcissism (see 2007 message from Spaw, above).

This all started long ago, when I expressed my disdain for birthday threads and for birthdays in general - which is why I wouldn't reveal my birthday. Then, Khandu started the annual monthlong Cult of the Joe Offer Birthmonth Thread. So, I lost the battle years ago. I still think birthdays are boring, but this one was rather pleasant. Thanks for the good wishes.

Acme asks if Abe Lincoln was President when I was a kid. Well, my pal Davy Crockett gave me his tent and cap before he died at the Alamo in 1836, and that was a long time before Abe was President. So, you do the math. 1864 was the last time I voted for a Republican for President.

It was fun keeping it a mystery all those years that khandu ran the birthday threads, but khandu hasn't been around much lately and the thrill of the mystery wore off. So I "came out." I was born on August 17, same day as Davy Crockett. There was a time when I was very proud of my Davy Crockett coonskin cap and my Davy Crockett umbrella tent.

Did Davy Crockett sleep in umbrella tents?

Oh, by the way, Harpgirl and I lived very close to each other in Detroit when we were toddlers, but we didn't know each other then. We met at Mudcat, and in person at the Florida Folk Festival.

But my stockbroker says I can take money out of my IRA in 6 months, when I turn 59-1/2, so I'm going to replace my 9-yr-old Honda and give the old one to my stepson.

Well, I really do hate birthday threads, mostly because there is so much same-old same-old in them. How many truly innovative things can you say about birthdays? Now, since people don't know when my birthday is, it gives at least some variety to the mix.

See, this is the problem with management. To supress birthday threads, he hides his birthday, so now they start thirty of them to celebrate his birth-month!! It's not so much the "law of unintended consequences" as the law of "too fockin' dumb to understand the consequences"...fortunately in this case, it doesn't hurt anyone except mebbe Joe's pride. But, see, Joe, the boys at the MOAB understand this phenopmenon real well. Ask BWL about the law of that which cannot be fucked with.
