Picking Sooty Blackberries is available here a steal at 10 pounds or 20us inc shipping. It is also straight from the people who published after Keith's untimely death. If that's not enough it has some bloody good songs in it too.

I echo Leadfingers sentiments and clearly link the memory of Keith's untimely death with that of Peter Bellamy. Two great Uk singers who must surely have secured their place in the Folk rolls/halls of fame.

Keith was from a working class background and sang many years in and around Leeds, being associated with Brian Senior and Peter Ogley and The Grove Inn which is still a live folk venue and folkie pub.

He was able to empathies with the thoughts and feelings of the ordinary people whom he knew or came into contact with.
He liked a pint and smoked and liked a joke. But his song writing was innate inspired and cleverly crafted and most of all singable. Keith learned his craft through traditional song inspiration and osmosis.
the world is worse off for his passing

Any of Keith Marsdens songs are worth singing - Picking Sooty Blackberries is well worth the finding , as are any of Cockersdales recordings .
Keith is one of those fine writers whose songs have been accepted into 'the tradition' and are too often sung without any reference to the composer , who died FAR too young more than ten years ago .

Oral tradition at work toadfrog! Graham's words are per the book!

A bit like Bring us a Barrel ~ 'That ferkin small Barrel will quickly run dry' [small ferkin barrel] but sounds a bit like swearing!!

Good, except as I recall the second verse, Third Line, it goes:
"Forswear these physics all, I pray, let no such doctor rule ya."

Graham, thank you VERY much!!!

During our session last Friday night there was an English fellow named Jeff who came for the first time and sang this song. A few people said they wanted the words. Now I hope someone can remember the tune, or Jeff comes back, which would be even better.

From: Graham Pirt

Old Peculier (note the spelling - a famous North Yorkshire beer) was written by the late Keith Marsden and sung by our group - Cockersdale (started by Keith) It is available in our book "Picking Sooty Blackberries" and on "Prospect Providence" I've just scanned the words in for you - hope they come through OK

Cheers!
Graham

OLD PECULIER
(Keith Marsden)

Some men take cider in the spring to make the sap rise frisky,
And when the Autumn mists come on they keep them out with whiskey.
Some say there's nought like English ale in Summers heat to cool yer
But I've one drink all seasons round - a pint of Old Peculier.

Chorus: A pint of Old, a pint of Old, a pint of Old Peculier,
Yes I've one drink all seasons round - a pint of Old Peculier.

For ague and gout some men take rum, for fever some take brandy,
Some keep the porter standing nigh, some keep the Hollands handy.
Forswear I say these physics all let no such doctors rule yer,
The one true cure the nostrum sure - a pint of Old Peculier.

Chorus:

In youth long hours with maids I spent tasting their delights sir,
Though greatly I enjoyed their days I much preferred their nights sir.
I lost my heart to Kates and Janes and sold my soul for Julia,
But now the ranting days are done, I'm left with Old Peculier.

Chorus:

If wife should nag or children err or trusted friend betray you,
With the magic potion to your hand these slights will not dismay you.
If peevish master with new tricks or foolish ways would school yer,
Then find your consolation in - a pint of Old Peculier.

Chorus:

And now the years are drawing in and fame past you has slid sir,
Forget the maids who said they might, recall but those who did sir.
Let cruel fact be lost in time, let kinder mem'ry fool yer,
And find a consolation in - a pint of Old Peculier.
Chorus :

I just e'd Dick and asked if he'd send them to me or post them here, but I can't remember if he's home or traveling. I think he's supposed to be in Seattle next weekend. If I get them, I'll post them.
Blessings,
Barbara

There is a drinking song about the beer Old Peculiar which goes something like

In younger days I ran with mays ............. As much as I enjoyed their days I more enjoyed their nights sir I gave my heart to --- and sold my soul for Julia But now I spend my evenings with A pint of Old Peculiar A pint of Old A pint of Old A pint of Old Peculiar But now I spend my evenings with A pint of Old Peculiar

A source or actual lyrics to this would be much appreciated!
