... I must admit I didn't even contact them this year until they'd finished their booking. So it's my own damn fault! But I'll be on it early next year - so please do mention my name ... couldn't hurt.

I hope the weather holds and bugs stay away and the music is just grand! I'm actually playing near home this weekend anyway - so I'm happy. But next year ....

I need some advice on where to camp this year. Last year we camped with some folks in the Walnut Grove, but that won't be possible this year. We probably won't arrive til Friday noon, so I realize prime real estate will be long gone.
John... Lin... any suggestions?

John and LIn are camped in the heathen Pecan Grove beyond the reach of the internet and other forms of civilization. I'll pass the question along tomorrow.

LEJ -
John, who is sitting right here, says it depends on how you are camping. If you are in a tent there should be plenty of places in the far edges of the Pecan Grove, down by the river. In a Winnibego or a caravan your best bet is the infield behind the main stage. Good luck.

Life sucks. Funerals suck. Husbands suck. Even if ('speshly if?) they are 'hran players. I am home. Didn't get to meet up with anybody but HIS rels. Didn't even get to visit my own moms grave.

Some days I think I'm never going to Winfield with him again. For anything. Besides, it's a long damn ways from here. 12 hrs in a car.

Of course, we DID stop at Cabelas in Sidney, NE......because HE wanted to.

I'm sitting here at breakfast explaining what I'm doing to some technogeeks I just met, the hippy chick at across the table is chatting about her baby sling with a couple grey-haired ladies she just met, and were all being serenaded by a guy with an antique D-35 jamming with a harp player he just met. Uncle Phil, your pictures are GORGEOUS! It's amazing how very much goes on in the Walnut Grove, the Pecan Grove, and the grandstand area. I think we could take a thousand pictures, and no two would be of the same thing! And by the way, thanks so much for the lovely shot of me in my Rat Nose at the Rat Camp Band Scramble...watch your coffee next year--revenge is sweet!)

Hope you and Michelle made it home to Big D all right. John and I are sort of home, still coming down from all the great music, fresh air, and craziness. Guess it's the sign of a good vacation when it takes you a week to recover, eh?

LEJ, did you find a place to camp all right? If you were in a tent, we could have fit you into our camping area with no problems. Let us know a little earlier next year and we'll plan on it! Hope you made it and had as good a time as we did. Sorcha, I'm sorry we didn't manage to get together. Let's plan to try again, okay?

Phil and Michelle, as always, a pleasure chatting with you two. I hope to have our photos up on Smugmug this week. I'll post the link here as usual.

See ya at Winfield next year! Only 364 days to go...

Thanks, Lin. I posted A few last snapshots - a couple of the fairgrounds this morning and some selected photos of places we stopped to pee on the way back to Texas.

I figured the clown nose picture was going to cost me, whether I used a picture of you or Michelle. Since you are at a safe distance in Kansas and she is here in Texas I elected the coward's way out. BTW there is also a picture of your right shoulder at the dulcimer workshop on the 8th.

Actually I got to see the whole picture site for the first time a few minutes ago. A few misspelled words and one partial picture but otherwise it looked pretty good. It was an interesting exercise in squeezing a lot of data through a little pipe. Beer and lack of sleep added to the challenge, but I thought it worked pretty well. The real target audience was Mom, who actually likes other people's holiday snaps. She loved it.

Anyway, we did family stuff after we talked to ya'll yesterday, left Winfield late morning and made it home this evening.

Lin is home and settled, since her truck is pretty well unloaded.

It will take about a week to get all the "stuff" out of the trailer so I can drag it down to get the propane tanks filled and then park it in the back yard.

I'm allowing about two weeks to get my truck unloaded so that I can sort out places to hide the stuff from both trucks and from the camper until it's time to start loading up again.

Once that's reasonably begun, it will be time to "winterize" the camper.

By the time I get about half of the "stuff" stowed/hidden somewhere, it usually is time to start loading up again.

The 2008 festival starts on Sept 17, which is nominally 365 days from now, but Lineup 2008 will be a week before that and "legal" camping to get in line will be 14 days before lineup. That actually leaves me only about 344 days to get there for next year ...

Time's a-wastin'.

I guess I'd better plan on getting up early in the morning.

John

Once again, with her customary efficiency and skill, Lin has posted far too many pictures from WVA 2007 at our camp website.

While I'm still trying to get my truck unloaded, she smiled sweetly and said something to the effect that "all the pictures are posted."

(A more accurate quote would be:

"*@#$*!, !!!, )*@$ I $@%#)()!#@ QUIT!!    $^%#$@#    $^#%@!"

but the message is the same, I suppose.)

Well, try looking through Lin's photos. It's the next best thing to being on the grounds. I just finished going through them all. Number 50 of 53 the the Street Stomp gallery is perennial Stage 1 featured performers "Still on the Hill" playing on a dirt road somewhere on the grounds.

Some Winfieldians are headed down our way. The Greencards, highly recommended, will be playing the Granada in Dallas November 7 on a Wednesday evening. Thursday will be tough at work. Carpmiester Dave Firestine will teach mando at O'Flaherty's Music Retreat October 26-28. And the David Munelly Band will be at the North Texas Irish Festival in March.

And from Uncle Phil's last link, if you click the "X" at the top to go back to the gallery view, the picture immediately to the left of Still on the Hill shows Kathleen, one of our favorite standup bassists, and Sparky who is the unchallenged master of the musical toad. "Toadmaster" Sparky makes spoons sound like a primitive children's instrument by comparison; but celebrated "a little early" this year so we didn't get to hear as much from him as we'd have liked.

The street scene is directly in front of our usual campsite.

Lin has analysed all my pictures from this year, and claims to have found the secret method used by some others to get those fabulous pictures that don't require lots of "fixing" to make things visible like all of mine do. She thinks it may be because some people take pictures in daylight. I may have to try it, just for the novely of it (although it sounds like sort of an "amateur trick" method to me).

Thanks, Uncle Phil--I've fixed the caption for Still on the Hill. Boy! If you got through ALL the pictures, you are a brave soul!

Sounds like you and Michelle are going to be having lots of good music to listen to at home. I'm already wearing out The Wood's Tea Company, Dave MacKenzie, Beppe Gambetta/Carlo Aonzo, and Old 78s CDs--they are all excellent. By some miscalculation, I didn't get a CD of the David Munnelly Band, although I certainly enjoyed their Wednesday concert! Hope the Old 78s come back next year, and Wood's Tea Company too (although anyone who knows me knows I'm not a BIG fan of Irish music, they are very easy to listen to).

Looking forward to next September already, and hoping John has his truck unloaded by then. :>)

I think you're right, Unk. It's probably just not in my nature to be out and about in daylight all that much - especially at the Festival.

It's entirely possible that excessive and inappropriate exposure could be the cause of the shrivelling of body parts that my doctors try to tell me is "just old age." I'll have to try to be more careful about thinking of things that just shouldn't be done by those of my kind.

Sorcha -

I'm workin' on it, fer cryin' out load.

I'm down to 3 rolls of AWG10 extension cords (250'), a couple of spools of 12Ga light stuff, and a couple of hundred feet of water hose left in the truck.

The problem is that the garage and utility sheds are both full, until I can rearrange the stuff I've already unloaded to make a place to put what's still in the truck.

(And if Lin keeps comin' up with "honey do" stuff, I may have to put some of it back in the truck so I can get to the table saw and drill press and such.)

A recent outside communication reminded us that the "schedule" showing who is to be performing doesn't usually appear until sometime around July or August, when they make the last big mailing of the "Occasional" (newsletter) to those who've registered to get it. It sometimes takes a while for the official website to be updated, even after the "mailer" lists who will be on.

We don't know if they wait until then to complete booking of the acts, or if it's just another of their "traditions" to keep everyone in suspense. A lot of the "grunt work" still is done by volunteers who may not be "authorized" to release information until those who think they're actually in charge give the right permissions.(?)

The second post of this thread has a link to the WVA website, and also to a couple of other sites that may be of interest - to get the "flavor of things" for use in preparing suggestions(?).

At the front page of WVA website, near the bottom, you'll find an email link:

hq@wvfest.com

The link is listed as "for requesting information," but we have received replies to specific questions. The organization has a somewhat "spotty" reputation regarding acceptance of suggestions about organizational/procedural things, but this is as good a place as we know of for suggestions about performers/acts.

It's a fairly small office, with few people active in the off-season, so anything that gets in the front door will likely be known to all.

I had a note from the Walnut Valley folks regarding a film for which I did the sound track (BLOODY DAWN) - they praised the music and the movie, said they'd had a couple of letters asking the festival to book me for '08 and they said:

" encourage your fans to contact the Festival Office and ask for you to be considered for the Festival. We really listen to people's requests and input.

The festival is successful because of people who purchase tickets and come each year. We listen when people request an entertainer!

Walnut Valley Staff"

... and it came from the hq@wvfest.com address

I feel just a little funny doing all this ... but from the email they sent me, it looks like, at least someone on the committee would like to be helpful - and they have given me specific direction to seek help. So I guess it's OK for me to encourage folks to write.

Jed -

Winfield is a fairly small town, with all that goes with it in "small town Kansas."

The WVA organization is a "small subculture of a small town" (with "delusions(?) of really big stuff" piled on).

Gossip and "community inside info" is essential in the whole festival setup. Having friends, and using them without mercy is one of the traditions of the festival. [And you're not even asking friends to lie, cheat, and steal, like some of the locals do for each other.]

You've got friends. We'll try to pester the festival for you.

And others may note: an email from Australia (or UK, or ...) asking them "who's this Jed Marum guy I heard you might book" is entirely within appropriate context. I gave a set of tent poles (a bit of a make-shift set) to a gang of Aussies who arrived with tent-but-no-poles down there about 16 years ago. They do know that the whole world is watching them.

John

Gee, John, are these locals of whom you speak my kinfolk or Sorcha's? /*large grin*/

Jed, don't worry about asking your friends for a favor. It generally works better than asking your enemies for a favor.

And I'm pretty sure the booking is all done nearly a year in advance, and NOT in Aug just before the festival. Jed, if you don't get in this year, try again and keep trying.
