The song (the chorus, anyway) is actually a spoof of a 1906 pop song by Billy Murray called Cheyenne (Shy Ann).

One of the variations we sang as kids at 4-H camp at Lake Tahoe, Nevada, in the 1970s:

[sing: First Verse:]
Fried spam, fried spam, cheese and boloney,
After the macaroni, we’ll have onions and pickles and pretzels,
Then we’ll have some more fried spam.
Fried spam, fried spam!

[speak]
Second verse, same as the First… English accent makes it worse!
[sing verse with English accent]

Third verse, same as the First, Robot accent makes it worse!
[sing verse with Robot accent]

Fourth verse, same as the First, Scottish accent makes it worse!
[sing verse with Scottish accent]

Fifth verse, same as the First, Frenchman’s accent makes it worse!
[sing verse with French accent]

Sixth verse, same as the First, Australian accent makes it worse!
[sing verse with Australian accent]

Seventh verse, same as the First, Texas accent makes it worse!
[sing verse with Texas accent]

Eighth verse, same as the First, Popeye’s accent makes it worse!
[sing verse with Popeye The Sailor’s cartoon accent]

Ninth verse, same as the First, Opera accent makes it worse!
[sing verse with opera voice accent]

Tenth verse, same as the First, Baby accent makes it worse!
[sing verse with baby voice accent]

Etcetera, etcetera… These were vocal accents the local kids of that era could easily recognize and attempt to mimic. Some may not be “politically correct” these days… please substitute appropriate vocal accents for your group.

NOTE: It is best to write a list of “silly accents” before you start the song. The leader then shouts out the next accent and campers (or group?) sing the verse in that voice. It can be quite hilarious, and if you make it past the 3rd or 4th verse without laughing your head off, you aren’t choosing silly enough accents.

Also, if too many people are laughing instead of singing, you have to start all over again!

Disclaimer: The company that makes Spam, may not appreciate the use of their name in this quirky camp song… I left the “S” as a lower case letter to, perhaps, mitigate their annoyance. So! Feel free to go with the original “Fried Ham” instead.

(source: "Campfire Activities", Girl Guides of Canada, 1993.)

Fried ham, fried ham, cheese and baloney,
After macaroni, you add mustard, pickles and ketchup,
Then you add some more fried ham, fried ham, fried ham.
Next verse, same as the first, ____________, whole lot worse.
At the blank, add the "change" you'd like to do in the next verse, e.g. "underwater", "a whole lot louder", "with a French accent", etc.

Thanks very much to Suzi Mills, who emailed me this version of the song!

Fried ham, fried ham, cheese and baloney
After the macaroni, we'll have onions, pickles, and pretzels
Then we'll have some more fried ham, fried ham, fried ham
Next verse, same as the first, ___________ do it a whole lot worse.
Then, substitute a guiding level:

Sparks (suck thumb while singing)
Brownies (look nervous and timid and easily distracted)
Guides (look extremely bored; drag the song out, including the occasional yawn)
Pathfinders (pretend to put on make-up)
Rangers (pretend to drive a car)
Leaders (shake finger angrily and sing song as if it were an order)
Commissioners (pretend to have tea, high-society-style - pinkie finger out, dab corners of mouth with napkin; high pitched voice)

Hi, sfgas-
Open Mike(in Chico) posted part of the song here (click). I've heard several versions, all more-or-less the same. Here's one:

    Fried Ham

    Fried ham, fried ham, cheese and baloney;
    After the macaroni, we'll have onions, and pickles, and olives, and pretzels;
Then we'll have some more fried ham, fried ham...

(repeat, incessantly, changing volume and using various accents and speeds)

-Joe Offer, near Colfax, California-

im looking for the lyrics of a song I had for my niece years ago. It went something like Fried ham, fried ham, meat and baloney...after the macaroni we'll have ...and it ended then we'll have some more fried ham. you sang the verses through like you had a french accent, then a person with a high voice, etc. the kids all laughed and loved it. any body ever heard of anything like this?
looking forever in oakland
