This old song has stuck with me since my childhood as i remember my dad singing it and it was one of my favourites. This is as close as i remember it and i have put in the guitar chords as well as this is the way i remember hearing it.

Thx. Ray Usher

-- Brown Eyed Prairie Rose --         Montana Slim

       G                  G7
Cross rollin' prairies wide
               C                G
Where the red, red roses hide,
                                                       D
My boyhood dreams I fashioned while I strayed.
         G                      G7
Years ago I made up my mind
         C                            G
Never never would I find, another
          D                         G
Like my brown-eyed prairie rose.

Chorus:

          D
You can take sweet violets blue
         G
All the other flowers too,
          A                                     D
But the red rose is the flower of my heart.
             G                      G7
When the sun has gone to rest
             C
'Neath the mountains to the west
       G                      D                         G
I'll be dreaming of my brown-eyed prairie rose.

                                    G7
Down the canyons we will ride
             C                   G
Where the red, red roses hide
                                                      D
Their fragrance fills the golden night in view
             G                     G7
Down the trail we'll harmonize
       C
Underneath the twilight [skies]
    G                      D                         G
As we softly sing my brown-eyed-prairie rose.

                                       G7
Where the white faced cattle roam
               C                      G
That's the place that I call home .
                                                          D
In a little ranch house nestled among the hills.
          G                            G7
Now my dreams have all come true,
                C
'Neath the heavenly skies so blue.
             G                         D                         G
There's no sweetheart like my brown-eyed prairie rose.

Chorus:

I believe it is...their fragrance fills the golden night in June.

Here's how I hear it:
My boyhood dreams I fashioned when I strayed
    ...
    Never, never would I find
    ...
We softly sing my brown-eyed-prairie rose
    ...
A little ranch house nestled among the hills
I'm not satisfied with "Their fragrance fills the golden night in view" or "night in June" either, but I can't think of anything that fits better. It sounds like he's singing "night adieu" or "night at you" or "night o' dew"—but none of those make any sense.

This is pretty much as I remember it, however, there are a couple of words that I can fill in:

where the red red roses hide..MY BOYHOOD DREAMS I FASHION WHILE I STRAY

and

years ago I made my mind never never would I find...

and

..golden night in June..

Give or take a word here and there...
Here's the best I can come up with

MY BROWN-EYED PRAIRIE ROSE
Wilf Carter a.k.a. Montana Slim

Cross rollin' prairies wide
Where the red, red roses hide
My boyhood dreams I [unclear]
Years ago I made my mind [unclear]
And never would I find
A sweetheart like my brown-eyed prairie rose

You can take sweet violets, blue
All the other flowers, too
The red rose is the flower of my heart
When the sun has gone to rest
'Neath the mountains in the west
I'm happy with my brown-eyed prairie rose

Down the canyons we will ride
Where the red, red roses hide
Their fragrance fills the golden night in view
Down the trail we'll harmonize
Underneath the twilight sky [skies]
And softly sing my brown-eyed-prairie rose

YODEL

Where the white faced cattle roam
There's no place like home sweet home
A little ranch is nestled among the hills
Now my dreams have all come true
'Neath the heavenly [skies of blue or sky so blue]
There's no sweetheart like my brown-eyed prairie rose

Down the canyons we will ride
Where the red, red roses hide
Their fragrance fills the golden night in view
Down the trail we'll harmonize
Underneath the twilight sky [skies]
We softly sing my brown-eyed prairie rose

YODEL

Anyone who'd care to take a stab at untangling it.....

After Jim came up with the title as "Brown-Eyed Prairie Rose", it did come up with the Wilf Carter references. I had used just "prairie rose" because he wasn't sure about the brown eyed part of it.

Wilf Carter a.k.a. Montana Slim wrote and recorded MY BROWN-EYED PRAIRIE ROSE in 1938. It's on the Bear Family 8-CD box set "Cowboy Songs." (This information is from Allmusic.com and the Online 78-rpm Discographical Project.)

I transcribed this from a sound sample:

You can take sweet violets blue,
All the other flowers too,
But the red rose is the flower of my heart.
When the sun has gone to rest
'Neath the mountains in the west,
I'm happy with my brown-eyed prairie rose.

Haven't found it for sure, but found a reference to a song called "Beautiful Prairie Rose" done by a group called the Prairie Rose Wranglers. Their recordings show the song Beautiful Prairie Rose on their first recording. Contact them and maybe it's the right song?

Help on Lyrics to Old song...

When the sun has gone to rest
'neath the mountains in the West
There's no Red Rose like my
[Brown-eyed?] praire rose [uncertain]
You may have sweet Violets Blue
And the other flowers, too,
But the Red Rose is the flower of my heart

When the sun has gone to rest
'neath the mountains in the West
There,s no Red Rose like my
[unsure] eyed Praire Rose????

Note:

Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys and Tex Ritter recorded a similar song .... My Brown Eyed Texas Rose

But it is an entirely different song.
