Does this mean I'm younger today than I was yesterday?

The date format: UK DDMMYY, US MMDDYY, Japan YYMMDD; so today in the UK the time "goes backwards": 08/08/07.

I've been writing the date all morning and I'd not noticed
My only excuse is that I tend to write the month in Roman numerals (there is a good reason, honest).

Today is already 09/08/07 for some in the US. US armed forces use the DDMMYY format. Civilians use MMDDYY.

I prefer to write the month in letters rather than numbers, which cuts out any confusion.

And after, how many of us talk about "the eighth month"? We say "August", so why go all numerate when we're writing the date?

And I'm pleased to see that that's the way the Mudcats gives the dates for posts.

Nearly every file on my computer is named YYMMDD_TextName. I've been using that format for more than 40 years at least.

That's the only way they'll show up in chronological order in Win Explorer, or when you sort file lists in most programs - among other reasons.

Of course, at the "turn" the 00 year started being out of sequence with the 99 years, so newer ones saved in the same folder with pre-2K ones use YYYYMMDD_; and sometimes for more special stuff YYYYMMDDHHMM_.

I thought everybody did it that way.(?)

John

well writing the month is a great idea - heres why..
a few months ago I upgraded my Simply Accounting program for my business.. (each year you pretty much have to buy the program for $280 if you want the payroll updates)

now it turns out I had to upgrade the computer at the same time as it
just ran win98 (this computer was used only for accounting)
after installing everything and printing out a backlog of invoices..
even though my date format on the invoices is month day year - and has been for years.. somehow when it came to printing the operating system switched the dates around to day month year..

of course I didnt notice this until customers called and wondered why the invoices were 6 months in the future.. (some dates were blank
when the format didnt make sense..)
so I had a whole lot of customers to call and reissue new invoices all because the windows xp default date format was different than the accounting programs.. (and instead of notifying you of the discrepancy
the software just goes ahead and tries to print in another format)

No John, that's just the official international standard, nobody will follow that except a few computer geeks.

Win explorer will list in date order if you have details view and click the date header - but it is the datestamp that defines it and if you look at the file and save it, especially after changes then the intitialisation date is lost. Though Office has properties that will indicate last changed and first opened. But then I usually copy from a previously formatted file and enter new data or text so not sure that works too well.

gotta go - Tempus fugits - making up for that lost day here!

I'm with you, McGrath. I like to write it out - August 11, 2007. It eliminates doubt and it reflects history and culture. Caesar Augustus, anyone?

Once in college we read an old poem that referred to 'July flowers.' The teacher said that it was pronounced like Julie flowers in the olden days. I like Julie flowers a lot better than the modern pronunciation.

When you write it 12 Aug 2007, you save an unecessary comma. Thought the Americans like d being efficient. (Put me down, jus joshing, ok?) Still .... (DOWN).
