Following recent thread about lyrical translations of "La Golondrina"/ "The Swallow", I wonder if there are any versions in English of "Vieni Sul Mar"? The original song isn't in the Database either, as far as I've been able to see.

An old traditional song from southern Italy, sung in concert as an encore by all the Italian operatic tenors. I think the original Neapolitan words are posted, but only luck can find them on Mudcat if posting was done within the past two years or so.

Most English translations of Neapolitan and Italian songs depart completely from the original lyrics, but here is one.

The song seems to be from the region of Venice, not Neapolitan.

I've got Italian sheet music of Vieni Sul Mar, and what's posted by Q above is actually a pretty faithful rendering of the first verse, but not the kind of lyrical version that I guess 2L.B.E. is looking for. And a later verse has,
"Addio, riposa, e domani/Quando l'alba a svegliarti verra/Sopra Lidi lontan, lontani,/L'infelice nocchiero sara", so the Veneto does indeed seem more likely than Naples. Maybe you should try a version yourself (borrow from J Locke, "Hear My Song..."!)

I am really not clear as to what, particularly, makes people say the song is from Venice--though it has been repeated, without explanation, a number of times. I cannot speak to the songs origins, but I can attest that the song is as regarded a part of the Neopolitan tradition--I lived in Naples as a child, and heard it sung often--

Though I am not conversant in the Veneto dialect, my understanding is that they use "vien" and not "vieni" -

MTed- I always thought it was Neapolitan, but I ran across an Italian website that said region of Venice. So I dunno fer sure.

I was just going by the reference to "Lidi"; isn't there a "Lido di Jesolo" in Venice? I'm guessing "Lido" has something to do with "shore" (cf. "littoral"); of course, I could just seek out a Dictionary....

Lido and Lidi can mean either banks or shores. There are lots of lidi in Venice, of course, but Italy is a penninsula, so the sea and the shore are a part of the collective identity--the phrase "patrii lidi", or "Shores of our Fathers"   is often used poetically for "homeland"--So you can't assume that "lidi" refers to anywhere in specific.

We lived in a palazzo in the hills of Naples, and looked out from our balcony on the bay and its shores. It is one of the most beautiful views I have every seen--for Neopolitans everywhere, those are the "patrii lidi" --

Confusion explained- Two songs involved here-
"Vieni sul mar" the Neapolitan song, and "Vieni sul mar" from northern Italy; the latter also known by its first line, "Deh! ti desta fanciulla." Both sung by classical tenors as encores.

The chorus of the northern song is:

Vieni sul mar, vieni a vogar,
sentira l'ebbrezza del tuo marinar!
(the two lines repeated).

I am still confused.
I can find nothing that seems reliable that ties the song sung by Tito Schipa to northern Italy, although that is mentioned in a couple of sites.

Someone who knows Italian music well is needed to solve this.

I feel sure that this song was popular in England around the sixties under the title "On broken wings" no bird can fly,On broken promises,love must fade and die.Cant remember any more but it must be traceable.

My father used to hum this to his grandchildren, so I in turn hummed it to my grandchildren, thinking it was an Italian lullaby.

I recently watched the movie "my wild Irish rose" and Dennis Morgan sang a song with the words "my merry blue eyes" but the tune was identical to vieni sul mar?

Who copied who?

My grandfather immigrated to America in 1909 from Calvene Italy, the Veneto of Northern Italy
and he sang the song to my father who sang it to me....
