Subject: Visiting UK in Fall 2008
From: Suffet
Date: 11 Aug 07 - 06:41 PM

Greetings:

I had original posted this message on an old thread called Visiting the UK this Summer, but that was terribly misleading, so I started a new thread.

It looks like my wife Marilyn and I will make our next hop over to the UK in the fall of 2008, possibly in September but more likely in October. We may be traveling with another couple from New York, Anne Price and her husband Wayne. Anne, as you may know, is a folk singer of considerable talent. Click here to visit Anne's website.

The four of us will probably start off in London, head up to York or thereabouts, and then go to either Glasgow or Edinburgh before turning back to go home. We figure to do this in about two weeks' time. If Anne and I get a chance to perform once in each of the three cities we visit we would be both happy and grateful.

Is there any folk club who would like to put Anne and me on for an evening? Although we sing quite a few songs together, we are both essentially soloists, so whoever books us gets two featured performers for the price of one. If anyone is interested, or can point us in the right direction, please contact me by e-mail rather than PM. I check my e-mail at least once a day, but I sometimes do not go onto Mudcat for a week or more.

Oh, if you give me your postal mailing address, I can send a press kit that contains a CD with recent live performances as well as studio tracks. In the meantime, if you go to my SoundClick music page, you can listen to Anne and me sing duet on A Shantyman's Life. You can also listen to me sing Don't Let Your Deal Go Down, with Anne joining in on the choruses.

Even if we are not featured guest performers, we still intend to visit folk clubs, singing pubs, and other folk friendly venues. Please rest assured that neither Anne nor I needs to be coaxed to do a floor spot.

Thanks.

--- Steve Suffet

If you are going to be in York I suggest you contact Roland Walls at the Black Swan Folk Club in York as they pay and feature people! I'll email you some details. It's a weekly club on a Thursday.

I've forwarded you a copy of one of their newsletters which will give you a flavour of the place and has contact emails and telephone numbers etc He does a good job.

If you are in York area and at a loose end on a Wednesday night you would be very welcome to come and visit the Thompsons Arms in Flaxton where we meet and play every week. We don't do guest artists but you would be more than welcome just to join in our singaround/session - it's a straight round the room everyone who wants gets a go and has a range of abilities from semi-pro to encouraged shy beginner and a range of music from instrumental to unaccompanied songs or choruses.

Regards

Nick

Greetings:

Nick sent me this same message by e-mail, and I already thanked him. I have already been in touch with Roland Walls, and I forwarded a press kit to him a few days ago.

Marilyn and I visited the Black Swan Folk Club in 1999, and we had a wonderful time. I got to sing a song or two as a floor singer, and we received an invitation to spend an evening or two singing at the Trafalgar Bay pub, which we accepted.

Nick informed me that the owners of Trafalgar Bay ended the music about two and a half years ago. Such a pity!

Greetings:

Anne Price and I, along our respective spouses Wayne Price and Marilyn Suffet, now have our travel plans set for next autumn. We will arrive in London on Sunday evening, October 12, and we will return to New York exactly two weeks later on October 26. We have accepted three offers to be the featured guest performers during that time. They are:

• Friday, October 17, 2008, 8:30 PM. Orpington Friday Folk at the Liberal Club. 7 Station Road. Orpington, Kent. Thank you, Girl Friday, for making this possible.

• Sunday, October 19, 2008. 2:30 PM. FAB (Folk and Blues) Club at the White Hart Pub. Argent Street. Grays, Essex. Thank you again, Girl Friday, for recommending us. We promise to sing Where's My Bagel and Lox? at both performances.

• Thursday, October 23, 2008, 8:00 PM. Black Swan Folk Club at the Black Swan Inn. Peasholme Green. York. Thank you, Nick, for putting us in touch with Roland Walls.

During the remaining time, the four of us will be stopping by other folk clubs, going to the theatre, visiting my cousin Alisha Sufit, seeing various museums, and possibly spending some days in the countryside. We hope to say "Hello" to as many Mudcatters as we can. Unfortunately, we will only have enough time to visit the London and York vicinities on this trip. We do plan to return, provided the climb to the top of the York Minster doesn't kill us.

I am really looking forward to this trip. The last time I was in the UK was around 1993, when my husband and I went to London and Edinburgh with my son Jason, who was 10 years old at the time. Wayne and I went to Ireland two years ago, and I got to sing in the pubs in Galway and other places. It was a thrill. I've been performing in the New York City area since 1979, but this will be the first time for me in the UK as a "featured guest". It's something I've always wanted to do. I loved London the last time I was there, but I've never been to York. It sounds wonderful from Steve's description. I've met some great British folkies on their visits to the US. Hope to meet more over there in October.

There is an alternative now. There is a 'London Eye' style wheel at the National Railway Museum in York about 5/10 minutes walk from the Minster which woould give you a similar view for NO EFFORT (but no gain without pain and all that stuff ...)

View from the Yorkshire Wheel

Do consider participating in Cecil Sharp House's open session on Tuesdays while you're in London. The building is in a virtual maze of streets but can be found by the intrepid urban explorer.

From: Suffet

Greetings:

Charley: Thanks for the suggestion, but Marilyn and I have been to Cecil Sharp House and Sharps Folk Club on our previous trips to London. The most recent was in 2006 when we met Mudcatters Micca, CatsPHiddle, and Gwenzilla. If all goes according to plan, the four of us -- Anne, Wayne, Marilyn, and myself -- will visit Sharps on October 14 or 21, or both.

Nick: Thanks for your suggestion as well. We intend to visit the National Rail Museum, so perhaps we will take a ride on the Yorkshire Wheel as well. Marilyn and I climbed to the top of the York Minster in 1999, but I have gained about 30 pounds since then. Let's see how we feel.

Redsnapper: Marilyn and I had a wonderful time at Sandy Bell's and the Tass in Edinburgh in 1999. We also spent an evening at the Whistle Binky, but it was mostly a session for tunes rather than songs. The other musicians tolerated my doing a couple of songs, probably because I was a visiting Yank and I did only old-time country numbers that easily lent themselves to jamming. We shall return, but not in 2008.

MGAS: We hope to meet you at Orpinton Friday Folk on October 17. Otherwise, almost all of our evenings are already committed, but we would love to get together with other Mudcatters if possible. So far we have nothing definite scheduled for October 15, 18, and 25. However, we need one of those evenings to visit my cousin Alisha, and we would also like to go to the theatre one evening. Saturday, October 25, is the evening before we return home. That may be the best time for us, but we cannot say for sure. Let's see what happens asthe date gets closer.

Anne: It's about time you become an official Mudcatter instead of forever posting as a guest.

DH: Thanks for the advice. :-)

There is less than an hour left in 2007. Marilyn is working a shift on the labor floor tonight -- she's a midwife at Mount Sinai Hospital -- and I'm left alone with my guitars, my computer, some cold chicken, and a 36-hour Law and Order marathon on TV. That explains why I'm here writing messages on Mudcat when everyone else is out partying. Ah, our time to celebrate will come tomorrow afternoon.

Meanwhile, dear fellow 'Catters, have a Happy New Year!

-- Steve

If you are still near York Saturday 25th, consider the White Hart at Mickleby near Whitby. About 40 mins drive from York. You'll be sure of a warm welcome and a floor spot.

Mu And Jim Wilkinson run the Club, but their daughter Rachel Crackett looks after enquiries etc. PM me and I'll give you contact details (I'm a bit wary of giving out contact details on the open forum)

Greetings again:

Growler: We will be on a tight schedule. Our only foray into Kent will be the two days and nights we spend in Orpington, October 16 and 17. We plan to return to London on Saturday morning, October 18, so I doubt that we will have time to get to Rochester. Thank you just the same.

Stallion: We are glad to hear that the former Trafalgar Bay session has a new lease on life. As I recently told you via PM, we have added a visit to York's Tap and Spile to our itinerary for Friday evening, October 24.

Tootler: Had we one day more we would follow your suggestion. Unfortunately, we need to take the train back to London on October 25 for our return flight to New York the next day. Thank you anyway.

Guest: If it indeed is a change of policy, then it must be a change for the better. Why not make a return visit to find out?

Greetings again!

As my poor old Yankee dollars keep a-tumbling, this trip is becoming more expensive by the day. At least my lucky 1907 sovereign with its 240/1000 troy ounce of fine gold keeps rising in value. It might even pay for one night's lodging in London. Neverthless, we, meaning me and the missus along with Anne and her hubby, are still committed to this awesome English adventure, and neither falling currencies nor failing brokerage houses are gonna stop us!

So here is why I'm writing. We still have two uncommitted evenings, October 18th and 25th. They are Saturday nights, and we'll be in London for both. We hope to visit the Cellar Upstairs Folk Club for one of them, and if allowed we would like to do floor spots. Most likely that would be on the 18th. The other, October 25th, is the night before we fly back to New York. Maybe that would be a good time for an informal get together with other Mudcatters? If necessary, we can do the old switcheroo and get together on October 18th instead, in which case we'll move our club visit back a week to the 25th.

Would anyone like like to organize that? I can be in a public place or at someone's residence. All that matters is that we can get there by public transportation, as we will not have a car in London.

If anyone is up to this challenge, please contact me by e-mail rather than PM. I check my e-mail at least once a day, but sometimes I let a week or more go by without logging onto Mudcat.

Thanks.

If you'd like, we can organise a house session at our place on either night - I feel the need for another party coming on, but I can hold out til then. There's an open invite for Mudcatters and we'll spread the news around the local sessions.

We're in east London, with easy transport access and we can provide limited accomodation if anyone needs a bed for that night.

Liz,

That would be wonderful. I'll check with Anne and her husband, but my educated guess is that we would prefer October 25th. It could be a going away party. East London is fine, as long as we can make it to Heathrow by 1:00 pm the next day. I presume that shouldn't pose too much of a problem.

We will be arriving from York midday on the 25th, having performed at the Black Swan Folk Club on the 23rd and having passed the evening of the 24th at the Tap and Spile pub. It seems that we are scheduling this trip down to the hour, possibly even down to the minute. I don't know if you have the space to put up the four of us, but perhaps you can recommend a hotel near where you live.

In any case, thanks for offering to organize this. I will contact you by PM as soon as I speak with Anne. Otherwise, you are welcome to reach me by e-mail..

Kevin.

Thanks for the invitation, but our plane is scheduled to touch down at Heathrow at 8:30 PM. We will be fortunate if we get to our hotel before the Underground shuts down for the night. The following Sunday, October 19th, we will be doing an afternoon performance for the Folk and Blues Club in Grays, Essex. There is a very slim chance we can make it to the Plough Inn by 7:30, depending on how the trains are running, but let us not count on it. The Sunday after that we will be on our way back to New York. So it looks unlikely that we will get to Walthamstow on this visit.

Best of luck with Colum Sands. Our own New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club featured Tommy Sands (plus his kids) in concert this past September. It was a wonderful concert and we had a good turnout. Nevertheless, between Tommy's fee, the rental of the concert space, and the cost of running ads in our two local Irish newspapers, the club lost about $500. I hope you do better financially with Colum.

I run the evenings and my friend Russ does the bookings and whilst he's mentioned most of the Autumn ones to me I can't recall who is on the 19th.

I'll ask who is on and let you know as that "may" inspire the journey from Grays! It's not far as the crow walks but trains on Sundays.........

Thanks, but I have already been in contact with Sheila Miller and she has offered us floor spots, provided the club has a session that evening, and provided Anne and I don't land a gig somewhere. We have to contact her again as the time nears.

If all goes according to plan, we expect to pay a visit to the Herga Folk Club on Monday, October 20. I understand that it moved to a new venue since Marilyn and I visited in 2006. If I recall correctly, at that time we took the Silver Link to Hatch End and then walked to the Harrow Arts Centre. We will have to get directions to the current site.

LTS: Anne, Wayne, Marilyn, and I are all good for October 25th, and we have placed it on our calendars. I sent you a PM inquiring about the detail. Please reply by e-mail when you get the chance. Thanks.

Nick: We plan to arrive in York early in the afternoon. If we are not too tired, and if we have a car, we will try to get to Thompsons Arms in Flaxton. What time does the session begin? I'll send you an e-mail with some additional questions. Thanks.

Everyone: We are nearly oversubscribed, but not quite. Currently we have just a single free evening left: Wednesday, October 15th. We will be in London. I have twice e-mailed the Magpie's Nest to see if they would like to receive a press kit and sample CD, but I received no reply. Does anyone have any other suggestions? We may just use that evening to visit my cousin Alisha Sufit. She's an artist, poet, guitarist, and accomplished singer-songwriter, and we will visit her in any event, even if it is for an afternoon. We will consider all reasonable suggestions for the evening of October 15th. And have Mudcatters ever been anything other than reasonable?

LTS: Glad to be of service.

Miss Lemon: We Yanks also call it Autumn -- sometimes. Thanks for the suggestion, but every moment of our two-week whirlwird adventure has now been accounted for. Our two previously unscheduled days, October 15th and October 18th, are no longer so. On the 15th my cousin Alisha is treating us to a home cooked dinner, and on the 18th Anne will be singing some songs at the Anarchist Bookfair. Her husband, author Wayne Price, will be speaking at the fair. We will add an afternoon in the Herefordshire countryside to the growing list of activities to consider for our next trip, whenever that is.

Giok,

Sorry to miss the Mudcat Gathering in Scotland this year, but even the laws of quantum physics, which allow for us to be in two places at once, tell us that as the probability we are in in place A approaches 1, then the probability we are in place B approaches zero.

John from Kemsing,

My doctor's orders: Fish, yes. Fried fish, no. Potatoes, yes. Chips, no.

Our UK trip is getting close at last. I just got back from California and have another month to prepare to travel again.   Had a great time in San Diego and LA. We'll get back to the U.S. in time to vote for Obama. Last time I was in the UK my son was 10. Now he's 25. It's been too long.

See you Brits soon!

Greetings again from New York City!

With a little good luck, my newest CD, Low Rent District, will be ready in time for our UK trip. The worldwide debut may very well turn out to be at Orpington Friday Folk on October 17th. Meanwhile, I have posted a preview of the title track plus one other song, I Know You Rider, on my SoundClick music page. Those two songs are somewhere near the top.

Enjoy!

Greetings:

Anne Price and I have just added one more appearance to our awesome English adventure. We will be among the performers at the Anarchist Bookfair at Queen Mary College in London on Saturday, October 18th. Some time between 3:00 and 5:00 PM each of us will do two 10-minute sets. Figure on one set from each of us each hour. Beyond that I cannot be more specific. Keep in mind that this is an anarchist event. How organized do you expect it to be?

Liz,

You are committed to hosting a potluck and house session on Saturday evening, October 25th. That's the night before we return home. We've been telling folks that the potluck begins at 7:00 PM and that they should e-mail or call you for the address, directions, and other information.

Anne, Wayne, Marilyn, and I reserved a couple of hotel rooms near Russell Square, so you are off the hook for finding places for us to sleep.

Yeah, flesh sounds good. We will call you from within London. See you soon.

AW... we spent a week this summer excavating the child's bedroom floor so there'd be space for you!

Good timing on the session, but if people want to come earlier they're welcome, just to visit and chat before the music starts.

Greetings for New York City!

Anne Price and I will be flying to the UK next Sunday, and here is a final rundown of where we will be for sure.

• Friday, October 17, 2008. Orpington Friday Folk at the Liberal Club. 7 Station Road. Orpington, Kent. 8:30 PM.

• Saturday, October 18, 2008, 3:00-5:00 PM. Anarchist Bookfair at Queen Mary & Westfield College. Mile End Road. London. Anne and I will be among several performers, and each of us will be doing two 10-minute sets some time during those two hours. How more exact do you expect an anarchist event to be?

• Sunday, October 19, 2008. FAB (Folk - Acoustic - Blues) Club at the White Hart Pub. Argent Street. Grays, Essex. 2:30 PM.

• Thursday, October 23, 2008. Black Swan Folk Club at the Black Swan Inn. Peasholme Green. York. 8:00 PM.

• Saturday, October 25, 2008. House session and potluck at the residence of Elizabeth "Liz the Sqeak" Draper. Plaistow, London. 7:00 PM until whenever. Please bring songs, food, and beverages to share. E-mail LtS or send her a PM for location, direction, and other details.

Anne and I will be traveling along with our respective spouses Wayne and Marilyn* as official goodwill ambassadors from the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club, and we hope meet many of our fellow Mudcatters. Please come and say "hello" and share a song or two.

*NB: When people ask Anne and me if we are married, we always answer, "Yes, but not to each other."

Liz,

I will try to call you on the 25th before the house session. You can then give us directions or else arrange to meet us at the train station.

Everyone,

We had a wonderful time at Sharps on Tuesday night, and even ran into David Diamond, a friend from the USA.

Oh, I should have known. Far up into the snowy north and south to Gretna Green and all that. It was cold enough here in London today, and last night the combination of wind, rain, and our own exhaustion kept us from returning to Herga for a second visit. Marilyn and I shall try to make it to Sharps tonight. I don't know about Anne and Wayne, but I believe our afternoon walk through Waterlow Park, Highgate Cemetary, and the Camden Locks area left them too tired for an evening excursion. Now that's a real pity, given Anne's beautiful voice.

We are off to York tomorrow on the noontime train from King's Cross, and we hope to say "hello" to many Mudcatters when we perform at the Black Swan Folk Club on Thursday evening, October 23rd. We then plan to appear at the sing around at the Tap and Spile on Friday night before making our way back to London on Saturday, the 25th, and the house sesseion at Chez LtS that evening. We just know that a lot of 'Catters will be there!

Timing!

I'll be in York on Thurday but boarding a London train, so will miss the Black Swan and, with a 'non- folk' hubby and a Wedding Anniversary to celebrate on the 25th I'll not get a 'leave pass' Saturday either. Bother.
Have a wonderful last few days on your whistlestop tour.
Remenber you get an hour extra to recover before you fly!!
Regards
H.

Greetings from New York City!

We are back home at last, having touched down at JFK last night. This is just a quick note to say that the four of us -- Anne, Wayne, Marilyn, and myself -- had a wonderful time in the UK meeting many new friends, reconnecting with people we had alreday known, seeing some of the sights (including a few that most tourists don't visit, such as Karl Marx's grave), tasting the food (which keeps getting better), and, of course, sharing music. We shall return!
