Just got back froma great time at Dartmoor Folk Festival.
Met up with John J, singing in the Oxenham arms, managed to plink the harp a bit on Sunday morning, in Mary & Anahata's workshop and then music session in Kings Arms. Witches of Elswick were Excellent in their concert on sunday afternoon, The meteor storm last night was amazing! All in all had a great time, despite there being considerably less singers than usual!
Cheers, Lucy

Had a great time, especially enjoyed the Orchard family on Saturday, and the Witches, and watching the stepdancing finals on the 15"x15" board...

Dartmoor is a gem. And where else would you see Jim Causley stewarding and Tom Napper stacking chairs?

I too enjoyed watching the step dancing. I wore my 'Stepping on the Eels Foot' t-shirt and got to speak to Simon Ritchie.

When we came out of the Demon Barber Roadshow (well done guys for getting it together so quickly) they were already queuing for the concert so we gave that a miss and enjoyed the Dartmoor Pixies instead.
Then we found an incredible session in the front bar of the Kings Arms. Several pipe players, fiddle, melodeon, hurdy gurdy. Anyone know who any of these musicians were, they were top class. The chap standing next to us said it was the best session he'd heard all weekend.
What a great little festival.

Had a great time at Dartmoor. I think I have found a new hobby - learning how to step dance! The Demon Barbers were awesome, and I could hear (most of) the words of the songs, whereas when I heard them before, the words were swamped by the music. I have never seen better rapper dancing.

I felt very priviledged when I did my set to get Tommy Orchard doing some stepping to my playing.

Really enjoyed Tom Bliss' singing - didn't have time to get round to hear many other guests, though.

Roll on next year.

and I should have added how fantastic the pixies are.

there is a lift and bounce to Jason and Marks boxes that you don't often hear (plus of course those unique Dartimoor tunes) and the drum n bass of Cyril and Ed is perfect for dancing. Just enough and no more. But the real star is Rob Murch. Simply dazzling 5-string banjo, and probably unique in style (in any band of the type anyway). Once I'd recovered from a prolonged fit of the giggles over the bootsy collins costumes (and Rennie trying not to grin as Sid Snot, with his mohican on sideways, playing Peaches as Sarah called the dances) I sat open-mouthed as always at the sheer casual brilliance of it all).

Catch them at Whitby with Taffy Thomas or repent at leisure!

Mrs Annie:
If one of the pipe players had a wife playing the fiddle, and a small boy with dark eyes, that's Rob, Ali, and Oscar Say. Oscar's my grandson.
I know they were there - Rob also plays English concertina.

I had a tremendous time! Thanks to all the lovely people I played tunes with, lots of them were called Tom. I just wish I'd taken my little boy!

"Then we found an incredible session in the front bar of the Kings Arms. Several pipe players, fiddle, melodeon, hurdy gurdy. Anyone know who any of these musicians were..."

If that was late Saturday night, it could have been:
- Myself on melodeon
- Mary Humphreys on English concertina
- Nick Whiteley, melodeon and hurdy gurdy
- Cath Whiteley, fiddle (specialist in gorgeous slow airs but can also rattle out fast tunes with the best of them)
- Paul (I don't have any other name for him) on Swayne and Bourbonnais pipes. I hadn't met him before but he's a lovely player and was in the session Mary and I "officially" hosted earlier in the day, and he's inspired me to get my own Swayne pipes out, do some practice and learn some more tunes.
- A couple I don't know on two sets of Northumbrian pipes.
- There was another melodeon player too, who played lots of morris tunes.

That was a very nice session, whether or not it was the one you meant.

The absolutely best session was the one we had behind the pub by Nick and Cath's motorhome on Sunday afternoon, where I was trying out Cath's new cello. The hair on the back of my neck still hasn't sat down...

Hawker/Lucy - NOW I know who you are! Nice to meet you at our workshop. I didn't know who you were at the time.

Anahata

Anahata, that sounds like the session, but you and Mary were not there at the time as I would have recognised you.
The couple on two sets of Northumbrian pipes, I believe were the ones who were doing a step dancing display in the afternoon (the lady had a multi-cloured skirt on)

I had a great time as per, and thanks to those that signed my Mudcat sheet here (and Sidmouth btw) i'll post the names when I dig it out of my trailer.

I met Tom Bliss, and an author, Michael Jenks who lives 3 doors down from our cottage in South Zeal. Looking forward to reading his books. worth a look

I'm next at Shrewsbury Festival over the bank holiday weekend.

Sadly couldn't make Dartmoor this year, but very pleased to hear The Witches and The Demon Barbers were there. It's a great little festival, if anyone's not been before. A hidden gem and it should have far greater 'coverage' on messageboards than it actually gets.

To me this was one of the best Dartmoor fests I can remember - from Friday night's marquee concert ( to hear one of folk's finest singers - Mary Humphries, followed immediately by another - Alison McMorland) right up until Sunday evening. I wish I could have stayed to the end.
The sessions were great, there was plenty of opportunity to sing (impromptu gatherings in the back rooms or the garden at the Oxenham, for instance) and as usual at this splendid festival there was a renewing of acquaintanceships with so many who return year after year.

Thank you South Zeal, and thank you Jane, Committee, and all the hard-working and affable stewards for continuing to give us the friendliest and most enjoyable festival there is.

Henry

Scoob, Don't know if I'll be brave enough to get my harp out if Harriet is there! But I can play some nice slow airs to get you all to sleep at the end of the day! ......and a couple of the tunes in Mary and Anahata's tunebook! (a bit slower than they do ;0)
I agree it was one of the better Dartmoors, The concerts were excelent and I did forget to say, the Shiatsu Massage in the craft tent was fantastic!
Cheers, Lucy

A lovely festival and I hope we'll be back. Hello Lucy, keep going with the tunes. Some are easier than others...

Anahata
(in windy Whitby, where we're having a great time too. Only a tunes session and a Song Links concert to go...)
