Appeal for votes in a good folk music and children's education cause. Martin Graebe sent this to Bob Berry (Wiltshirebob), who forwarded it to me. NWS is entered in the Arts section of the National Lottery Awards. Wren Music play a major role in keeping Sidmouth festival going and in promoting folk arts generally.

Devon-based folk and community arts development charity Wren Music has been voted through to the finals of the National Lottery Awards 2007 for its Nice Warm Socks project. It is one of only three arts projects across the whole country to be selected, and now needs votes from the public to stand the chance of winning the two thousand pounds first prize, which will go towards further work in arts education.

The Nice Warm Socks project uses singing to develop the basic communication skills of children with severe learning difficulties and physical impairments. With funding from the National Lottery Awards For All scheme, the Wren Music team of professional composers, musicians, songwriters and educators worked together with Speech & Language Therapy specialist Shan Graebe, and staff and students from the Ellen Tinkham School in Exeter, to create songs relevant to young people with special educational needs.

The success of the project led to wide interest from other special needs schools and from Speech & Language Therapists across the UK and farther afield. With their advice and feedback the complete package was developed, which includes a professionally recorded audio CD with seventeen songs, backed up by a range of free resource materials, scores, and notes for teachers on the website http://www.nicewarmsocks.org.uk/ as well as training for teachers and language therapists in using the songs effectively.

Since the CD was released in late 2006, interest has continued to grow. It has received very good reviews in specialist journals, and is now being used as far afield as Australia, Canada, USA and Italy. It has also been widely used in mainstream education, where it is valued for its usefulness in developing early-years language skills.

I had a similar message from Martin Graebe and Sue at Wren. You beat them to it ~ they were about to put a thread up. The work that Wren does down here is absolutley wonderful and now they have extended it to Nice Warm Socks it is a bonus. Yes, I voted in the first round, and have done so again and just add my plea to Kitty ~ please vote for them and tell all your friends to as well. Here is what Martin had to say in his email,
'Nice Warm Socks' and the National Lottery Awards. I didn't expect that we would go forward to the next stage - but we've done it. Nice Warm Socks is in the final 3 projects with a very real chance of winning. This is an incredible honour for the project and for Shan and the Wren Team who have worked so hard on the original project and then, once it has been launched, with teachers, parents and the children for whom it is so important. This is such a great opportunity that we are shamelessly begging for all the votes we can get. We really believe that winning would draw attention to something that can really make a difference to the lives of the children that we are trying to reach - we would be grateful for your vote in this final stage and we would be even more grateful if you could pass this on to anyone that you believe might be willing to vote for us as well.
Just click on http://www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/awards/project/27 and register your vote. If you know someone that would like to vote but doesn't have Internet access they can vote by phoning 0845 386 8062 - calls are charged at a BT local land line cost of 1.5p.

Thank you for your support. This project has already made a difference to the lives of a lot of young people with learning difficulties - your vote could help us reach even more.
Get voting.

I too was intending to put up a thread!!

One day we might see the Forces struggling for lottery money for some of their extravagances, and projects like this being fully funded and not having to struggle.

In the meantime, get voting and ask your friends to do likewise.

The 'Nice Warm Socks' project has been has been selected by a public vote to to be one of three arts projects across the UK to go through to the finals of the National Lottery Awards 2007 in a few weeks time. It would be really appreciated if you could cast your vote for the project by going to http://www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/awards/project/27 and clicking the 'vote now' box before 31st August.

The 'Nice Warm Socks' project uses song, specially selected for children at an early stage of development or with learning difficulties to help them improve their communication skills. Devon based folk and community arts organisation Wren Music created the materials working with speech and language specialist Shan Graebe and and staff and students from the Ellen Tinkham School in Exeter.

'Nice Warm Socks' was given money by the National Lottery 'Awards for All' scheme to produce a CD of 17 songs, teaching and other support materials. You can find out more about the project on the website http://www.nicewarmsocks.org.uk/

'Nice Warm Socks' now needs public votes by 31st August to stand a chance of winning the two thousand pounds first prize, which will go towards further work in arts education. So, please, take a moment for two mouse clicks that could help a lot of children for whom it would make a big difference - and tell your friends!

Thank you, on behalf of the 'Nice Warm Socks' team

Martin Graebe

Thanks, Kitty

I was struggling to put my own message together and then when I'd got it up here, I found yours.

We really appreciate everyone's enthusiasm about this project. It is making a lot of difference to some very vulnerable young people's lives. Your votes will help us reach more of them.

Best wishes

Martin (Graebe)

As there are now 2 threads, perhaps a Joe clone can combine them? Keep this at the top, anyway!

I followed the link to "Further information" which says, "The National Lottery Awards are an annual search to find the UK's favourite Lottery-funded projects", so I suspect you have to be domiciled in the UK to vote....

Re international support for Nice Warm Socks

I know that we have had a lot of support from all over the world in the first round of voting - I believe that this was seen as a plus for the project. We believe that it is OK for anyone, anywhere to vote.

The team certainly believe that the project is for anyone for whom it would be a help, no matter what language they speak or where they live. While most of the 17 songs are in English (and some in American English!) the selection includes one gaelic song and one from Ghana. We have sent packages to several parts of the World.

Please feel free to vote, no matter where you live

Martin (Graebe)

I am just going to vote.

As a parent who has had the help and support for one my daughters, by speech therapists, portage workers, etc, I can only say how grateful we have been.

Anything that helps in this way, has to be applauded and supported.

Thanks, Greenjack and Herga Kitty. I've had such success over the years using singing with my own lovely students I'd certainly like to encourage this kind of program.

I was pleased to see that the caption of this thread was not (as I feared) either a spam or a scam. I am inundated with invitations to 'cast my vote' in spurious surveys on Coke vs Pepsi or Chevy vs Ford or dozens of other supposed competitors, was prepared to find that 'ugly wet socks' was the other entry in thechoice, and all to get my name on an e-mail list. And then --- there was reference to a lottery in theUK; almost as common as those survey spams are the happy announcements that I've won a large number of pounds by the random selection of my e-mail address.

I'm happy that nice warm socks is an honest-to-god program that I'd love to vote for if I weren't a sadly ineligible Yank. I wish we had it here! Good luck!

Guest DonD ~ as a 'yank' you are still eligible to vote. One of the things that was remarked on in the first round was the international interest. Wherever you are in the world, please vote.

I bumped into Martin and Shan in an outdoor clothing shop on my first morning in Whitby - we were all looking for new waterproofs, but were keeping an eye on the socks too.

Less than a week left for voting, so please do if you haven't already.
