Looking for the lyrics or a source of a parody of "The Green Green Grass of Home". Not sure who did it, but it was probably done 30 years ago. Know part of the lyrics refer to stepping off the train to see the old outhouse and the old oak seat I used to sit on. Any help would be appreciated. Laura

I vaguely remember that parody, I think it was done by Sheb Wolley, aka Ben Colder, who has parodied quite a few of the hits throughout the years.

Looking forward to this one. I can't resist telling you that when I was a kid, my Aunt Mildred brought a musician she was dating over to the house. Nice guy, it was Sheb W., and he gave me a copy of the sheet music to his hit,Purple People Eater! I never met him again, and I always forgot to ask Aunt Mildred anything about him.

I only know one verse of the parody, if its the same one:

The old outhouse looks the same as I walk down the lane
And close behind me is my mama and my papa.
Down the lane we run, and we might make it
If we don't then we'll just fake it
That's why we have such green green grass at home.
Love to have the rest.

1) Louie Roy - We are after THE PARODY or some parodies, NOT the original song.

2) nancyjo - Look at the bottom of this page - see the link - Right click and open new window. Common sense and following instructions on screen should work.

Nancyjo, and Louie. There are numerous threads on the subject. Have a search for HTML here at the Mudcat.

Seems to me I remember hearing a song parody of this which had more than connotations of the left-handed "grass". Can't find that on the 'net either.

I recall Max Boyce doing a parody of this in the mid 70's.

I've checked his web site but no lyrics for it there.

However, Joan from Wigan supplied me the worfs to another Boyce song, so she may have thisone too.

A friend of mine sings this after singing the regular song:

The old outhouse is still standin'
though the catalogue is used and gone
and there's that old seat that I used to (sshh)-sit on.
down the path I'd run and try to make it
though there were times when I had to fake it

Still haven't locate the one Laura's looking for. But...

GREEN, GREEN GRASS OF HOME
Curly Putman

The old hometown looks the same
As I step down from the train,
And there to greet me are my momma and my daddy.
Down the road I look and there runs Mary,
Hair of gold and lips like cherries.
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home.

CHORUS: Yes, they'll all come to see me,
Arms a-reachin', smilin' sweetly.
It's so good to touch the green, green grass of home.

The old house is still standing,
But the paint is cracked and worn,
And there's that old oak tree that I used to climb on.
Down the lane I walk with my sweet Mary,
Hair of gold and lips like cherries,
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home. CHORUS

Then I awake and look around me,
At the gray walls all around me,
And I realize that I was only dreamin',
'Cause there's a guard and a sad old padre.
Arm in arm we'll walk at daybreak.
Again I'll touch the green, green grass of home.

FINAL CHORUS: Yes, they'll all come to see me,
In the shade of that old oak tree,
As they lay me 'neath the green, green grass of home.

From /thread.cfm?threadid=43154#639222

CAMPSITE AT DRUMCREE

Drumcree looks much the same.
On the hill above the plain,
Flaps the residence of Kittery and McAutry.
There's broken glass and wire that's barbed
And boys decked out in marching garb.
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home

CHORUS: Oh yes, they'll all come to greet me,
Arms outstretched and smiling sweetly.
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home.

My oul' tent is still standin'
And me sleepin' bag is dry,
And there's the oul' latrine I used to wee in.
Down the road I walk that's called Garvaghy,
A trip that always makes me happy.
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home. CHORUS

The army and the lawmen
Say, "Up the road you go, men!
Never mind the residents complaining."
And we play "The Ducks of Magheralin"
Even though the tune's a din
And then we play "The Green Slopes of the Boyne." CHORUS

But then I wake and look around me.
A thousand cops surround me,
And I realise that I was only dreamin';
For the hoors in thon oul' Walks Commission,
On our parades are forever pishin',
So we're camped out on the green, green grass of home.

FINAL CHORUS: Oh yes, they've stifled our ambition,
The hoors in the Walks Commission
So we're camped out on the green, green grass of home.

THE GREEN, GREEN GRASS OF HOME
Lyrics copyright 1994 by Clyde Bauman

My old back yard looks the same as I step out in the rain,
And there to greet me is my hound dog and the silo.
Down the path I walk to the old two-holer.
I sure am glad it ain't no colder
As I walk across the green, green grass of home.

My outhouse is still standing with the half-moon on the door,
And there's that great big painted plank I love to sit on.
When I sit in there, there's never many -
Just me and God, and J. C. Penney -
And around me grows the green, green grass of home.

Then I stand up and look around me
At all the corncobs that surround me
And I realize: I'm glad it's not December.
When it's cold out, I try not to shiver,
'Cause when I do, I get a sliver!
And I bleed all over the green, green grass of home.

Every now and then, I just don't make it -
Sometimes my kidneys just can't take it -
And that's why we have such green, green grass at home.

From http://nfldsongs.tripod.com/06/grass.htm:

GREEN, GREEN GRASS OF HOME
(Joan Morrissey Rendition)

The old hometown looks the same
As I fall down from the train
And there to meet me is Joe Smallwood and John Crosbie.
Down the lane I look, and there runs Neary,
Lookin' oh so sad and weary.
It's good to smoke the green, green grass of home.

CHORUS: Yes, they've all come to meet me,
Arms a-reachin' smiling sweetly,
It's so good to smoke the green, green grass of home.

The old house is still standing,
But our treasury has run dry;
And there's that old seat that Valour used to sit on.
Down the lane I look, and there runs Rossy,
Chasin' after our old cow Bossy.
We're gonna have some green, green grass at home. CHORUS

THE GREEN, GREEN GRASS OF HOME
Larry and\or Peg Monaghan.

The old home town looks the same
As I float down from the train
And there to greet me was my brother's marijuana
Down the road I look and there grows mary
Hairs of gold and buds like oranges
It's good to smoke the green, green grass of home.

Well, they'll all come to see me
In the shade, toking sweetly
It's good to smoke the green, green grass of home.

Then I wake up and look around me
At the prison bars that surround me
And I realize that I was only dreaming
There's a guard and there's a rope beside me
Soon they'll hang me from an old oak tree
It's death to smoke the green, green grass of home.

Yes, they'll all come to see me
As they drink and watch their big screen tv
While they hang me up for the the green, green grass of home.

Elvis Presley
Kenny Rogers
Hank Snow
Merle Travis (Record Lady RQ5. The verse "I awake" spoken. My favorite)

Stompin' Tom Connors has a great LIVE version of the Parody on "Live at the Horseshoe"

GREEN GREEN GRASS OF HOME

The old home town looks upside down
As I lay here on the ground
There's the old freight train that I just fell off of
Down the path I look and here comes Bessie
Damn good cow, but sure is messy
Thats why we got such green, green grass at home.

The old outhouse, its still standing
Though the catalogue's used and gone
There's the old oak seat that I used to shhh-sit on
Down that path I'd run and hope to make it
There were times I had to fake it
Thats why we got such green, green grass at home.

If this song is about an execution, is the execution a hanging because "they will see me from that old oak tree"? This song writer Putnam, does anybody know his thoughts and inspiration of this? He was born in 1930 in Alabama.

Re: Homer & Jethro's version of GREEN GREEN GRASS OF HOME.

I've consulted a couple of online discographies, and assuming they're complete, the only time H&J recorded GREEN GREEN GRASS OF HOME was when they teamed up with Chet Atkins and performed as The Nashville String Band. It's on NSB's album "Identified!" RCA Victor LSP-4472 (1971). Trouble is, all 10 cuts on that album are instrumentals. In fact, I think NSB only did instrumentals.

You can see the album cover and the track list here.

So it looks like H&J didn't record a parody – unless, of course, they used a title so different from GREEN GREEN GRASS OF HOME that I can't recognize it.

The discographies I checked were:

There to meet me, was my Poppa with a copper.
Down the lane I walked with my sweet Mary,
Teeth all black and her legs all hairy,
She'd had a few on the green green grass of home.

(Being the racist sod I am, I used to add a bit to one of the lines;)

My Poppa with a copper, (and Jones the Bread and Dia the Meat.)

I used to have about four verses. Taught to me by a good friend from Middlewich sadly no longer with us. I might have them written somewhere, but that's all I recall. Yet I used to sing it as an icebreaker after waffling on about throwing knickers at me and breaking microphones with my voice.... Err.. at least 30 years since I had to recall it.

The version I'm thinking of contained something like:

Down the lane I look and there crawls Mary
Hair like gold, and lips like apples.
It's good to smoke...
...
Down the lane I look and there lies Mary
Hair like gold, and lips like watermelon.
It's good to smoke...

But, this is what I found
the boogiemen - smokin' the green green grass of home

In an interview not so long ago Tom Jones requested his female fans not to do the throwing of the underwear on the stage during the ballads - sort of "come on, now, we're a;; a bit more mature aren't we:-

This was just a thought on ageing pop idols with ageing fanbases:-

The Green Green Grass of Home

1.Now the old crowd looks the same, as I step out on the stage.
And there's the roar of the same old fans to greet me,
Oh it's Alice, Doris, Lily and Mary,
Skins a little wrinkly and chins a little hairy
They've all been put out to the green, green grass of home.

2. When they were maidens young and fair,
They used to throw their underwear,
Upon the stage where I would strut my strut so boldly
But now it's only ladies of a certain age,
Who still try to throw their knickers on the stage
And they lie there on the green, green grass of home.

Chorus:-
And those knickers hot and sweaty,
They fell down from heaven just like confetti,
And landed on green green grass of home.

3. I used to use those knickers as a towel
To wipe the sweat from off my brow,
And throw them back to the sound of all that screaming,
But nowadays I'm not so keen, because,
After all, you don't know where they've been!
It's so sad to think of that green, green grass of home.

4.Now you wouldn't hear me complain
When those knickers fell like rain,
Though one or two had probably been weed in!
But nowadays before they stay throwing ,
They've probably wet themselves without even knowing, ,
It's so hard on the green, green grass of home.

Chorus:-
And those knickers hot and sweaty,
They fell down from heaven just like confetti,
And landed on green green grass of home.

5.Well ,these days I move a little slower,
My voice a little lower,
But as we all know things drop as we get older,
Some of those knickers won't reach me, this I know,
They'll only get as far as the second row,
And land there on the green, green grass of home.

6. Well just like these ladies here
These are my twilight years,
Oh, well, I suppose I'd better just enjoy the time remaining
And no use pretending , though it's sad,
Look out, here comes an incontinence pad!!
It's a health and safety issue on the green, green grass of home.

Chorus:-
And those knickers hot and sweaty,
They fell down from heaven just like confetti,
And landed on green green grass of home.
