I was the secretary of Manchester University Folk Song Society, 1970 to 1972. Stand out evenings included Bob and John Copper, just after Bob's A Song for Every Season book was published. Also Tim Hart & Maddy Prior after they'd joined Steeleye Span (that was a very full evening..), Bert Lloyd, Martin Carthy, Robin and Barry Dransfield cancelling at the last minute, Jo-ann Kelly, Nic Jones.... Other committee members included Pete Moore, who later moved to Sussex - where are you now Pete?, and also Rob Ixer (husband of Rosie Hardman). Previous residents included Andy and Brenda Towers from York, Stuart Hylton and - way before my time - song collector Ken Stubbs. The union building also hosted Manchester Folk Festival in September 1971. There was also an informal singaround in the Welcome inn Rusholme, and I often visited Manchester Sports Guild (MSG) and Harry Boardman's folk club. Through friendship with fellow student Ian Ankers (nickname Boot), I ended up in Crewe and am still here... sang with Boot last weekend at the 50th anniversary of the town's Sing Out Folk Club (which now meets only once a year for a Christmastime get together - no law to say that folk clubs must meet weekly!!) Happy days.

Edinburgh University has had one since 1958, hence its 50th anniversary was in 2008. They had a fabulous celebration in 2008: I was too young to be there in 1958! Although my name does not appear amongst the glitterati, I did launch into "Bonnie Glenshee" and got the world and his wife singing along!

When was prmartin, 12 nov 07 0529 pm, at Cambridge, I wonder? There was a club run mainly by Leon Rosselson & Stan Kelly-Bootle at Cambridge in my time in the the 1950s, called the St Lawrence: never made out why it was called that, and nobody involved seemed to know -- must regretfully admit that Oxford's 'Heritage' a much better name. Still no idea why St Lawrence -- anyone happen to know?

Just picked this thread up in 2015 after finding a tape of sessions at Hull University Folk Club (called The Round) from 1973/4.I ran the club then with Ian MacAnulty. Hello too to Baz who replied early in this thread. We booked acts like Nic Jones, Mike Harding, Barbara Dickson, John and Sue Kirkpatrick, John James, Archie Fisher, Richard Digance and Barry Dransfield to name a few.I still have the poster for that one day festival too.The tapes were made by Mike Rowe. If anyone knows where he is now I would love to contact him.

We used to go to the Southampton University folk club in the mid sixties. It met on a Sunday evening and was run by Andy Rushbridge (or a similar name.) The Watersons and Martin Carthy/Dave Swarbrick were among the guests.

The Heritage Society at Oxford has turned up a lot in this thread. I was there with McGrath of Harlow and Mike of Northumbria(to mention only the Mudcatters) in the 60's. Very thriving, Tony Rose, June Tabor, Peta Webb also around, plus a host of others, many of extraordinary quality as performers. Good days!
    I was also involved in running university clubs at Cambridge and Lancaster, also in the 60's. As to university clubs these days, I know of none. Mind you,I don't know anything much about folk clubs at all these days, so there may well be some for all I know.
    Plenty of students seem to come to gigs I play at in various places, but maybe they aren't into organising their own gigs.Or, as is possibly more likely, they organise gigs but dont book sixty-something year old folkies!

Lets face it, a high proportion of today's folkies were at Uni in the early 70's and we like to reminisce about those days because we can't remember what happened this morning.
I was on the Salford Uni Folk Club Committee from about 69-72 which was weekly on a Sunday. We could book all the top names of the day and make a profit and had a real problem spending the grant. Unusually for any Uni club, many and sometimes most, of our audience were non-students from the nearby tower blocks. Our biggest draw, oddly, was Jake Thackray, who would pull in over 300 punters to the bar with its cheap crap beer.
In those days we had to book through the MSG which had agency rights.
I think we had the first concert by Steeleye Span but stand to be corrected on that.

What a good idea Durham, having a session with a set list for the first half, with the dots on the website, and anything goes in the second half.

I rather hoped that this thread would reveal that in spite of it all there might be some surviving or reviving university folk clubs.

No sign yet of any. Just shared memories of past times. I still hope something from today might be turned up.

One thing about Oxford Heritage when I was part of it, a few years before Kitty and George (same time as Mike of Northumbria) - it wasn't exclusively a student affair. If you were into folk music, especially if you wanted to sing or play, you were welcome. I remember learning San Francisco Bay Blues from a regular who worked as a hairdresser, I forget his name.

From my experience at Cambridge and from what I've heard from friends at other Unis is that the traditional university folk club with weekly booked guest performers is more or less non-existent.

I know in Cambridge this is partly due to the fact that the other University folk societies have flourished, to the point that it wouldn't be possible to put a regular event on without clashing with at least one of the other folk music or dance societies (you can play or dance nigh on every day during term time).

We do still have the occasional guest performers doing concerts, and there is usually a good contingent who go to the local concert venues when they have things on, and the Cambridge Folk Club as well. So folk is not dead.

Dreams of beer being 10p a pint

I was at Keele in the early 60s. I remember seeing The Spinners, and having to hang my coat in the laundry room for a week to get the smoke out of it, but didn't usually go to the folk club as, at the time, I had other things to do on a Sunday.
The English folk dance club used to perform at the panto that the drama group put on (for the staff children, supposedly), but in my second year numbers dwindled till we had a regular atttendance of 'half a Dashing White Sargeant', and we combined with the thriving Scottish Dancers.

In 1966 I organised a Folk Concert for that year's 'Rag' at Loughborough University. We had guests from Loughborough College of Education, and Nottingham University Folk Club. The Concert over-ran by about 2 hours - much to the caretaker's disgust. I have just discovered the tape of it, and am in the process of digitising it. The acts were actually very good considering most of the singers / musicians were in their late teens. I'll upload the results in the next few days. Chris J Brady

We had one at the London Hospital Medical College in the 60s (I was there from 64-70): I remember we had John Renbourn and Jacqui McShee even BEFORE Pentangle were formed. Just saw John Renbourn again last week in Edinburgh: looks a bit different now, but still played a blinder!

Portsmouth Polytechnic folk club upstairs at The Star in Lake Road, maybe 69 or 70?

I can only remember an odd guy in trousers that had obviously formerly been curtains, playing an accordion and singing Bitter Withy - and Jasper Carrot, who ran his hand up my leg - oh and Spud Murphy singing Farewell to the Monty, and I suspect he was guilty of The Wild Rover on numerous occassions.

I don't know if it was so bad I can't bring myself to recall it, or possibly good, but has faded into the mists of time.

Pretty scarce, I would think, unless these days they are "jams" or "open mike" nights.
Certainly was some good music at Aberdeen Uni FC between 1972-1975.
Guitarists were popular, because the committee were guitar players - Davy Graham, John James,Wizz Jones, Martin Carthy, Hamish Imlach,Dick Gaughan, Nic Jones[sure I've a photo somewhere], Chris Foster, Mike Whellans, Vin Garbutt and Tony Cuffe had one of his first gigs there with Dave Stewart.Silly Wizard, the Tannahills and Battlefield Band were all just starting to be noticed. Hedgehog Pie were popular too.We paid Billy Connolly £40 for a "Fresher's Night" concert. Barbara Dickson only got £35 on a later night. Some good local players too, the Gaugers/Ghille Mhor, Lizzie Higgins, Stanley Robertson, Janice Clark.
We also gave the Bothy Band their first gig in mainland Britain - a night never to be forgotten.
"Efcee" could add more, I'm sure.

Sheffield Uni, 1966.

Remember seeing (in just one term!)
ANNE BRIGGS
TONY ROSE
TONY CAPSTICK
WIZZ JONES & PETE STANLEY
FELIX DOONAN

and the cheapest pint (Tennants Amber) was 1/8d (about 8p).

Also saw DOMINIC BEHAN at a different pub in the town.

So did students just get bored?

After about mid 70's it just seemed to die or perhaps it's just this thread :).

However most of the people I played music with last night in Whitby were young and that was the driving force in the sessions (apart from one which was just people showing off and excluding people) which suggests the world will go on

The Round (Hull) was still running in 1978 but died some time in the early/mid 1980's I believe. Highlights for me included Ragman's Trumpet, Martin Carthy (the night the PA played up, he was not happy), Magic Lantern, Muckram Wakes, Roger Watson solo gig where the fire alarm went off and we ended up dancing Dorset $-Hand along the "Great White Way".

Happy days

Glad to read that Warwick University still has a folk club. I ran it for some of my time there (1970 - 74). Got into trouble with the Ents Secretary when my ambitious booking policy coincided with a drop in attendances and we lost money ... but I remember booking Dick Gaughan, Boys of the Lough, Jasper Carrot, Harvey Andrews, Dave Burland, Jeremy Taylor, Martin Carthy, Gasworks (remember them?) and lots more. Frequent visitors included Sean Cannon.
We also had a lively folk dance club. And then just up the road we had the folk club at the Virgins and Castle pub.

Mrs Duck wondered whether Hull uni had a folk club...it did in my time 72-75

Called the Round and held on Friday nights, it had an interesting mixed booking policy...trad, trad arr,singer song writers etc.

Personal Highlights were June Tabor, Swann Arcade and Vin Garbutt

I seem to remember we ran a one day festival, but with beer at 12p a pint I'm not sure!!

And you could always go to the Blue Bell for the rest of the weekend

Hull was pretty good for music all round...Wings did one of their first secret gigs there, and I remember Reg Presley having a pady when somebody ran off with his ocarina....

When I went up to Nottingham, I could get 10 pints of Whitbread or 8 of Tartan for a quid - but it was old money, a florin or half-a-crown.

Later, when I was on the law course there, one of the LLB students was much into folk (I wasn't then). He was a singer-guitarist. His name was Al Harris, very tall bloke. I wonder what happened to him?

Incredibly expensive! In 1972 the Hall of Residence I lived at in the first year and most of the University bars were somewhere around 13p-16p for bottles of Newcastle Brown and Amber which were popular at the time and a pint of Guiness was about 13p at Leicester poly where we used to go and visit.

I remember the club in Reading which met at the Studio Bistro which was largely run by students from Reading University. The club, known affectionately as 'The Turks Bottom' due to its location opposite 'The Turks Head' pub on the London Road, was very successful.
We published the clubs programme in 'The Broadsheet' for at least the first three years we were in busimess. After this the club moved into the Students bar for a limited time, (I know because I was MC at the club for a while there.)
It then moved to 'The Cap and Gown' which had been the venue for The Reading Folk Club previously. Unfortunately, someone made a complaint about the state of the beer one night, and the club were thrown out. At about this time Mike Tierney had started the very successful 'Readifolk' with which I later became involved in running. Despite my attention that club still thrives.
Having moved away to darkest Hertfordshire I don't know if Reading University currently has a folk club or a ceilidh society. Any offers?

All the best,

BobH

Nothing at all at Loughborough when I was there (12 years back now). In spite of there being a load of kids working their way through Russ Shipton or other guitar tutor books, there wasn't a club there. There was Musoc, but that seemed to be all rock/metal, not acoustic. And there weren't any folk acts booked to perform either.

Barry Dransfield - that's just reminded me of another from Leicester. I think with his brother though my memory could be all over the place.

Either students had lots of money in those days (though I don't remember it as being that expensive) or performers were reasonably priced but Universities at that time were able to attract some pretty impressive performers.

*****

As a complete aside and nothing to do with folk music in any shape or form - but they used to get a wonderful range of bands as well. I saw Cockney Rebel and Queen in local halls of residence; a friend of mine achieved his dream by shaking hands with Ray Davies when the Kinks played (wonderful evening); Caravan who I liked at the time disappointed me; Sweet highly surpassed what I expected. Loads of music of quality and diversity.

Heritage in Oxford was my first taste of folk music too, in 1973, and though I missed meeting Kitty there by a year or so, when we met years later her face was definitely familiar. Within weeks of joining the club I met Nessie instead and we're still together after 34 years.

I also got quickly into the running of things, and I have a copy of a Heritage Membership card from the 1973 Michaelmas Term showing my name as the club's new "librarian", right next to the outgoing librarian, June Tabor... But I never met June there either, and if there was a club library I never saw it. But what a club, what glorious days for folk, what memories! And the beer was 25p a pint too.

Those days there were 8 folk clubs in and around Oxford - on Sundays there were two, and I had to alternate. Heritage on Monday, The Irish club in the Gardener's Arms on Tuesday, another Uni college club on Wednesday... Hardly surprising I never got a degree from Oxford, but it was a more than fair swap, getting a wife and my love for folk instead.

Noone ever told me whether Hull University had one or not. One of the sad things about folk clubs in general is that they are often only publicised in the pub where they are held or in folk magazines. As a result I never knew they existed until about 12 years ago!

I wafted in and out of Oxford without even finding the Heritage club (or it finding me) but I only lasted two terms and absconded to Paris during an Easter holiday course and joined the Place Contrescarpe busking society. It was only meeting up with June Tabor and Tony Rose later at Cecil Sharp House that I found out what I should have been doing. Didn't stop me from shamelessly crashing the Heritage reunion at Sidmouth and bluffing it out though.

Eventually I completed my tertiary education at a bilingual university on the German/French border and decided to run venues on and off campus, but became totally pissed off with the students who were wholly Irish-obsessed. It was as though Alsace-Lorraine music didn't exist and they weren't at all keen on English either. Load of peasants.

So my own experiences of university music aren't all that interesting. Sorry,

However, Keele. That's where I first met Barry Dransfield, not at a gig but as a 17-year-old fiddling in a session under a staircase. And yes, Dave the ex-Gnome, I know Fluff. What a talent.

Keele folk club, just 10 years ago, had a lot of excelent acts. Both home grown and imported. I first saw 'Fluff', an amazing young lady fiddle player there. I next saw her playing with the Incredible String band at Brighton!

I don't think Newcastle Uni has it's own club per se but the people on the folk music course have regular nights at the Bridge folk club - and excelent they are too! I certainly expect to be seeing a few of them on the big stage in time as well:-)

This fits in nicely with the other thread about the young - As long as it is good young people will enjoy it. Uni folk clubs are an excelent example.

Cheers

Dave

I was at Reading in the early 70's too, when Hilary Jones (as she was then known) was running the folk club. Most of the leading performers of the time appeared, including most of those named in the OP. I also remember seeing Boys of the Lough, Magic Lantern, Nic Jones and Martin Carthy of course. And the standard of the floor singers was usually pretty good.

There was also a good folk club in the town, where Johnny Collins was a regular, and that too had an excellent selection of guests.

Reading University folk club was brilliant in the early '70s too, and run, as I remember, by Simon Mayor and Hilary James, who continue to be just as active and successful musically now. All the generation of singers you detail above came there.

Manchester University Post-Grad folk club circa 1975 was good too, but mainly booked more regional guests - Mike Harding, Bernard Wrigley, Bob Williamson - booked by my (now)husband and myself.

A generation on in 2001, Exeter Uni. was mostly into folk dance - well it was until my daughter and her friends arrived, anyway!

Then again, I wouldn't have touched IVDVF with a bargepole in my day, but it is quite acceptable these days.

I guess Sheffield Uni. is currently fairly robust in traditional music terms, I don't know about other universities though.

The thread is prompted by a conversation I had yesterday with a friend I had lost touch with for the best part of 35 years. When we were at university in the early 70's he was involved with running the Folk Club at Leicester and I was a member and used to go along and listen to some of the people who came and played.

Looking back we went through a few of the people who came and played and some of the ones that I remember were -

* John Martyn and Danny Thompson
* Wizz Jones
* Derek Brimstone
* Jeremy Taylor
* Bert Jansch
* John Renbourn
* Jacqui MacShea
* Richard and Linda Thompson
* Stefan Grossman (I think)

...and many others. As I remember things were well attended

Now without wanting to start yet another discussion about whether this was really a folk club*, I was wondering whether Universities these days still offer this sort of level of performer and if not whether there is still a thriving University folk scene or not?

At the same time it was a nice nostalgic wallow and brought back many pleasant memories. John Martyn playing in what I reckon was his prime with Danny Thompson (and sharing his drugs with the audience as he tended to :)!) still brings back a smile. So please feel free to have a little nostalgic paddle.

*(or whether the booking policy was wrong or how sorry you feel for me having to listen to this lot and how much better it would have been for folk music if they had booked other stuff or how much my future view of music has been mangled by a theoretically broadbased education establishment or whatever bee you have in your particular bonnet etc etc)
