OK, we were merely triumvirate last night, the Barden of England, Growler, and me, but we had a good time and the acoustics are great.

We will now organise a roster of hosts to run this EVERY Thursday. So far it is song/session format, turns to play, everyone so minded joins in.

If it works we will be aiming to have the occasional "name" or "big name" in the future - watch this space. The entry door is marked "Porters Bar" (or something like that) but the bar is actually inside Dickens World and looks quite Dickensian London underworld.

Singers and players get beer at staff prices. Again, if it works, we will be looking at getting maybe a small barrel under gravity or something to stand on the bar, but at present the bottled Spitfire is drinkable and consistent.

Next night will be Thur 24 Aug.

NOTE _ UNUSUAL FEATURE

We will be aiming to start the singing 7 or 7.15 pm to try to catch the passing trade from punters who have been in Dickens World and are relaxing with food/drink in the bar afterwards.   There will accordingly likely be a break mid-evening to rest throats, and then noise will resume until about 11-ish.

MGAS, it's in the new Dockyard Retail Park at Chatham Dockyard.

If you are coming from the Dartford side down the A2, just follow the signs at the Strood junction, go through the Medway Tunnel, take the slip at the tunnels end and turn right, then first right again.

Dickens World itself has been in the press quite a lot for various reasons....

It also has a website http://www.dickensworld.co.uk/ and a google for "Dickens World" will find a large bundle of information, some pro, some anti.

The folking goes on in Porters bar accessed via stairs between the actual Dickens World entrance and Nandos. Maritime Way, Chatham, Kent.

If all runs to plan this Thursday we will have a special treat from a man I hope we will be able to get back later for a full guest evening, possibly the most authoritative living English delta-style blues player, Kris Dollimore.

http://www.krisdollimore.com

Kris's previous bands include the Godfathers, Adam and the Ants, the Damned, and Del Amitri - all focal bands of their times. He is and has been a very sought after session player too.

A Bloody good evening, even though I left early, as I had been at work since 7.30 in Tonbridge. However we are looking to rival other venues with big named folk artists once a month and a sing around every week. Watch this space !!

I have mentioned this and also Knockholt and the Good Intent to singing family trio the 'Poms From Oz' (see thread current about their trip by their Mudcatter Tropic Al) who will be in UK from 6 Sept to 14 October. They are truly excellent singers with amazing blended voices and harmonies who do varied stuff very well, and have performed quite a lot in UK previously but mainly oop north. They may head your way this time, and I commend them to you heartily if they make contact.

Refresh - who's coming the coming Thurs, ie the 13th? Growler, who is host that night? I have done the last two.

NB - there are buses every 10 minutes until 40 minutes after the last door in Medway Maritime closes. They are from and to Chatham Station and are run by King's Ferry.

Growler, KC tells me they by hand leaflet every boat and every house on St Mary's Island every week about the ents at DW. I wonder what he puts on the flyers - but he is very clear that the people who afford boats in the harbour there work during the week and only come out to rusticate at weekends.

Refresh.

I think I might have a slight problem - possible emergency court hearing in North London in the afternoon - but with luck I will still be at DW on time or soon thereafter, and the worst case outcome is likely to be lateness rather than a no-show.

I left the barrister to do it, and he buggered it up, but I got to folk on time.

A pleasant evening with me, the Shirt Murderer, Fisheye, George, and TDL. The acoustics are really good - we could hear every word from Fisheye.

More of you really ought to come. Growler had fangache and so a sick note, and the Barden presumably was on a re-take.

We two of the Shiny Bum Singers (Julianne and "Floyd the Roadie") will be in the London/Rochester area next week for a couple of weeks and again in November. Canberra Chris has given us some recommendations from the Shiny Bums' visit in May so we are really looking forward to catching up - particularly at Good Intent, and now also at "Folk Dickens". And anywhere else within reach.

From George and myself, thank you for an excellent evening Richard, just rather amazed that the medway fraternity does not frequent the place, it has excellent acoustics and yes i believe even tone deaf leopard could hear my attempt to sing.
Hopefully this venue will continue, I know george and myself will visit as often as we can. with around a dozen singers and a nice audience , it would make a fantastic evening.
regards
Fisheye

I am so glad that we went on Thursday. TDL, Fisheye and George were all first timers, and without us Richard and The Shirt Murderer would have to have held the fort on their own. The venue has excellent accoustics and deserves much more support. It's a mixed session, and players, singers and listeners will be made very welcome. It needs more people to attend before it can viably progress to having the occasional guest.

A whole seven of us got there tonight, though there was something of a split-shift. There is some talk of it going fortnightly. IMHO this will be counter-productive. For a venue to get established peop0le need to know that it is there every time that they want to go to it. That's the only way it can build up. C'mon everybody- get behind this!

I should have been there last night, but the voice is still playing up and I feel I need to rest it rather than bu**er it, and attending is too tempting. I hope to have something resembling a voice come Tenterden.I really struggled at 'The Barge' on monday just gone and I'm sure I must rest it. Sorry I couldn't be there however.

Mmmm.. I'm not sure that I've ever been on the committee of anything. However, I did speak to Growler this evening for clarification and he told me that following dicussion with Kevin Christie (the guv'nor), it had been decided that Folk Dickens would be held twice a month, i.e. on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays. This means that there won't be a Dickens Folk next Thursday (4th October).

As for the Good Intent, it is indeed on this coming Tuesday (2nd October). It's no exaggeration to say that I was absolutely thrilled when I saw the Shiny Bums at the Good Intent earlier in the year, and I would be so pleased to meet any of them again or their mates from down under. I'm really looking forward to seeing you at the Good Intent; Growler tells me that a (very) extended floor spot awaits you! If you're down in Kent for several days, I'm sure I can guide you to suitable places for musical pleasure!

Glad you have made the connection with our stray Bums Julianne and Floyd, who would have been with us but as you see had to come over now instead.

Julianne is responsible for several of our special moments, including the Filing song, and our Morris dance number which was a stroke of her particular genius, combined with Floyd's inside knowledge of the jargon. Insist on a solo rendition with audience participation - bring your own dead keyboards.

Julianne also has a voice that can pierce tank armour.

Will they encounter Tone Def Leppard? It will change their lives forever.

Post when they will be there, as my sisters Rosie and Angela might like to make it too.

Go Julianne and Floyd!

Cheers,
Chris

Thanks Chris. Not sure about tank armour but it has been known to strip paint.

We'll be at Good Intent next Tuesday (2nd Oct) really looking forward to hearing everyone. We're heading off to a cottage in Dorset (Witchampton) for a week after that so we're looking for folk happenings within travelling distance from Friday to Thursday (5 to 11 October). Then we're heading west to sail to Ireland on Thursday 18 October. We haven't booked accommodation along the way yet so we could catch up with any of your favourite places that are on the way. I'll start a new thread with our itinerary. We'll be back around this area in November.

Cheers

Julianne

Well, we turned up to Folk Dickens tonight. I don't get onto Mudcat every day, and did try to get info last night, but Waitrose was down. I have dial-up, but Trev has Tesco Broadband, so most of my stuff is done on his computer. The staff at DW were seemingly unaware that we had gone fortnightly also, so I rang Richard. We weren't too upset, but fear the thing won't establish itself if it goes fortnightly. One foreseeable problem being Twitton. It runs on the second Thursday, and we like to go there . If we don't fancy the guest, will come to Chatham.
