Subject: BS: I can't see my tits any more... From: Liz the Squeak Date: 17 Aug 07 - 08:38 AM Manitas and Limpit have ganged up on me whilst I was away at the weekend and moved her into the spare bedroom where the computer used to be. As a consequence, I can no longer gaze out of the window over the garden and watch the acrobatic antics of my tits as they hang off the nutpecker. All I have now is a view of the road in front, an unoccupied sycamore tree and the tops of cars. I am bereft. What view do you have and what would you miss if your room were moved? LTS |

From: peregrina Date: 17 Aug 07 - 10:59 AM My room has not moved, but my view--a roofscape of victorian houses and warehouses and then in the distance, the white tower of a medieval cathedral,--has been obscured by an ugly brick building going up now, by metres every day. Subject: RE: BS: I can't see my tits any more... From: Stilly River Sage Date: 17 Aug 07 - 05:40 PM I have been cultivating a view out of my office window since I moved into this house five and a half years ago. There is a beautiful rock house across the street and they have large trees and a beautiful lawn. My yard had a bog case of benign neglect (rented out for many years before I bought it) with an ugly hedge and uninteresting bermuda grass turf, but I hacked out the hedge and planted trees. After five years they've put on some height and girth and provide lovely shady spots. And I've put in beds out by the street, one ambling through the middle (parallel to the house) and some annuals near the house. My view is now of a dappled shade under the multi-stem vitex (that always has a few sweet-smelling bright blue blooms) and a pink rock rose and some bright red/yellow/orange lantana out by the curb. I've just recently situated a shallow tray of water under the vitex, hoping to interest some of the birds that seek shake in it all summer. Nothing so far, but it has been only a few days. They need to discover it. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: I can't see my tits any more... From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 17 Aug 07 - 05:46 PM Oh, I see tits every now and then. That's one of the advantages of living in the woods where clothing is seasonally optional. When there are no tits, I see trees. Sometimes there are interesting things in the trees, like the Mississippi Kites that have been hanging around here lately. |

Subject: RE: BS: I can't see my tits any more... From: Liz the Squeak Date: 18 Aug 07 - 02:34 AM Alas, the front of the house faces the street where tits don't like to be seen. Plus, there's no-where to hang a feeder here, except on the telephone cables outside the window, and the phone companies don't like you doing that. It's also impossible to get up to the window as only the top 8" opens - I'd love to get hold of the 6'8" tall bugger who designed them, so reaching out of it is not an option. (The room is 9' tall, the top of the window is 12" from the ceiling, the top of my head is nearly 4' from the ceiling and I can only reach up to about 6'4"). LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: I can't see my tits any more... From: Stilly River Sage Date: 18 Aug 07 - 06:06 PM Liz, you've inspired me. I pulled out the bird feeder and put it back on the side yard (out where I can see it from the kitchen window) and filled it. It's near the bird bath, but that hasn't attracted any birds this summer, with so much rain. No one has seen my tits for quite a while. It's time to remedy that. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: I can't see my tits any more... From: Rowan Date: 18 Aug 07 - 10:24 PM Well, Liz, my room will be moved by the end of the year but I can't see any tits from either the one I'm in or the one I'll be in. I do get roesllas though so I'll miss the deodar and the southerly aspect and gain an elm (which doesn't do much for either rosellas or me) and acquire a westerly aspect overlooking a lab and a concrete driveway. I think I'd rather be seeing your tits. Or at least rosellas. Cheers, Rowan |

Subject: RE: BS: I can't see my tits any more... From: Rowan Date: 18 Aug 07 - 10:59 PM Ah, Snail, I sympathise. For a while, when I lived at Yarrowyck, I would have a similar experience every couple of months. The rural peace would be destroyed as the air would be literally torn apart as an FA 18 would scream past at just below Mach 1 and just above the 500' minimum height; five minutes later another would do the same trick. It was usually RAAF Amberley practising sneaking up on RAAF Sale (or vice versa; substitute Base names for any inaccuracies) but I was advised how to dissuade them. Get the sort of steel pan (~1 metre square and 20cm deep) used to train people how to use fire extinguishers and put it out in the paddock half filled with a mix of aluminium and magnesium powders. Use a fuse or spark to set it off when one of the planes goes overhead. My advisor reassured me that the flash ignition gives off the same infra-red signal as the launch of a ground-to-air missile, resulting in the cockpit alarms going off with all sorts of automated evasion manouvres. No infringements of the radio frequency spectrum legislation and, providing it isn't a day of total fire ban, perfectly legal. The notion was that the pilots would get so tired of having to put in extra work they'd go strafe kangaroos somewhere else. I never got around to trying it before I left that residence and I'll bet JohninKansas will give us the good oil on such tactics. But just contemplating it brightened the mood no end. Enough of thread drift; back to Liz' tits. Cheers, Rowan |

Subject: RE: BS: I can't see my tits any more... From: Doug Chadwick Date: 19 Aug 07 - 04:20 AM This year I moved offices and, for the first time in 25 years, I have a view from my office window of bushes and wild flowers instead of refinery columns, vessels and pipes. We set up a bird feeder during the spring with wild bird seeds, niger seeds for the finches, peanuts and a suet block. What birds visit our avian diner? Almost none! A tree sparrow came for a couple of weeks during May for the wild bird seed; Nothing in June, although 3 goldfinches did stop several times on a nearby bush before deciding to fly elsewhere; (The suet block went mouldy so I had to throw it away. I changed all the rest of the food at the same time.) A chaffinch, maybe two - but not at the same time - in July and early August; Sometimes on the peanuts but mainly on the ground around the feeder. This week we had a visit from a great tit to the peanuts. 3 birds in 4 months! What am I doing wrong? I get more than that in my garden and I don't have a bird feeder. DC |

Subject: RE: BS: I can't see my tits any more... From: Stilly River Sage Date: 19 Aug 07 - 04:53 PM I find the combination of water and food and a safe nearby perch is best. Is there a tree or woody shrub in the are that you can capitalize on? Or can you plant something in a pot that will grow shrubby a few feet from the water and feeder? SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: I can't see my tits any more... From: Doug Chadwick Date: 19 Aug 07 - 05:51 PM There's a line of shrubs about 12 feet away but on the other side of a security fence. The feeders are hanging from a set of perches made by the apprentice from bits of tubing. It's set on a strip of ground waiting to be landscaped after the building work and I can't really plant anything as it's an "unofficial" installation. DC |
Subject: RE: BS: I can't see my tits any more... From: Liz the Squeak Date: 19 Aug 07 - 05:56 PM Doug - try sunflower seeds instead of peanuts. I've had both in the garden and to a bird, they've ignored the nuts and gone for the seeds. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: I can't see my tits any more... From: terrier Date: 19 Aug 07 - 07:24 PM No tits I'm afraid, but my room overlooks the yard full of terriers, with swallows flying around during the day and bats flying at night, beyond that I can keep an eye on the horses grazing in the paddock and beyond that I see the Clewydian mountains. My office is on 4 wheels with a diesel engine and I quite often find my job takes me through the mountains of Snowdonia (one of the most beautiful sights in the world)or the bleakness of the Peak district and sometimes the Yorkshire Dales. I guess I'm just lucky. |
Subject: RE: BS: I can't see my tits any more... From: Doug Chadwick Date: 20 Aug 07 - 02:26 AM The stand can hold up to 4 feeders. Mixed seed (including sun flower seeds), niger seed and peanuts are on offer at the same time. The sparrow went for the mixed seed. The chaffinch and the tit preferred the peanuts. The niger seed and suet block, when I had it, have been ignored by all. DC |
Subject: RE: BS: I can't see my tits any more... From: Liz the Squeak Date: 20 Aug 07 - 02:42 AM Suet blocks are an acquired taste I've found... my kitty Raven acquired it very quickly and lost it almost as rapidly. See the thread 'Pussy, tits and fat balls', which I can't this minute lay my mouse on... My tits have repeatedly ignored a feeder full of mixed seed in preference for one filled with black sunflower seeds (all black, rather than the b&w striped variety). Mind you, the slugs have been enjoying that one when I empty it over the garden. The resident blackbird then eats the slugs when he can, so it's a sort of Karma. Well, not for the slug.. more Nirvana! The only birdlife out today that I can see from my tiny window, is a pigeon, sitting in the wires over a very shiny silver car, that my neighbour spent a great deal of Saturday washing and polishing... just waiting....
